My invention relates to improvements in holders for roll material, such as toilet and wrapping paper, ribbon, tape and the like, but it is particularly adapted for use in holding the well knowntype of roll of toilet paper.

My invention includes a roll holder adapted to be mounted. on'a frame'adaptedto hold the cardboard roll on which toilet paper' is wound and to be'resilien'tly firmly held in lower op- 0 erative position and of a type adapted to be conveniently raised up and 4retained in raised position the necessary time for replacing a roll on the free end of the roll holder.

Objects of my invention are to provide an '15 improved and simple device of cheap conn struction on which a used up roll may be readily replaced and a new one inserted and which will effectively firmly retain the roll in a set position while the toilet paper or 29 other material is being unwound therefrom.

These and such other objects of my invention as may hereinafter appear will be best understood from a description of the accompanying drawing; which illustrates an embodiment thereof.

In the drawing, Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my improved roll holder showing the ro-ll support itself in lowered operative position in full lines and in dotted lines raised for the ready removal of the toilet paper roll therefrom.

Fig. 2 is asectional view partially shown in elevation through the center of the frame end and roll support.

Fig. 3 is a side view of the notched end of a frame side arm.

I also-provide a supporting arm 30 pivoted at its rear end by means of the .pivot -bolt 32 to the 'other frame arm 2O and carrying theother end of the roll Asupport 26 at its front end, in my preferred form by means of the screw 84 projecting vinto the rollfsuppo'rt 26. The rear end 36 of the arm 30 is preferably vprovided with a cam portion 38 having a substantially flat rea-r end 40 and a substantially flat lower edge 42. My improved construction overcomes the Y tendency of former roll holders of this type to jump up and down while the roll 'is being rapidly unwound or subject to sharp jerks often given to it in use. I provide spring means 46 mounted on said second mention-ed side arm 20 underneath the cam end 38 adapted to abut said lower cam edge'42 to resiliently retain said arm L30 vand roll ysu-pport 26 in lowered position as said roll unwinds and adapted to spring over the corner 50 and then abut said rear cam end 40 to hold said pivoted arm 30 and roll support 26 in raised position for the ready insertion of Va new roll thereon. Of course, instead of providing a cam extension the rear end of the arm 30 may be left substantially rectangular and of itself forms a cam surface to perform substantially the same function. While any type of spring may be used, I preferably provide a U-shaped spring 46 having the lower end thereof secured in any desired fashion to a projection 52 from the inner side of the second mentioned frame side arm 20. In order to assist in holding` the side arm 30 and roll support 26 in lowered position l preferably provide a flat spring 48 projecting upwardly from said stop means 44 having an indented portion 49 adapted to overlie said pivoted arm 30 in lowered position to assist in retaining said arm 30 and rollsupport 26 in lowered operative position and releasable on upward movement of said pivoted arm to cause the spring 48 to spring back to permit said movement. lt is thus apparent that when the pivoted arm 3,0 and support 26 are lowered to operative position the arm 30 will rest on the stop 44 thereby supporting that attached end of the roll support and the projection 28 will rest on the notch or stop means 24 for the opposite end of the roll support and that in addition the roll support will be firmly held in position against the stop by means of the leaf spring 46 abutting the lower edge 42 of the arm 30 and the inwardly projecting portion 49 of the spring 48 snapping over the upper edge of the arm 30 to assist in iirmly retaining the roll therein. lt is obvious, however, that when it is des'red to replace a roll, that the arm 30 and the attached support 26 may be readily pivoted to the raised position shown in dotted lines in Fig. l in which a roll may be readily removed off the free end of the roll support and a new one inserted. lt is obvious therefore that I have provided a novel vtype of roll holder with a novel type of means for specificially holding the roll holder in lowered position when in use and in raised position during the removal of the paper or other strip material therefrom, and one which is simple and yeasy to manufacture and one in which the roll itself may be readily replaced.

lt is understood that my invention is not limited to the specific embodiment shown and that various deviations may be made therefrom without departing from the spirit and scope ofthe appended claims.

What I claim is:

l. A roll holder, consisting of a frame having a back portion adapted to be attached to a wall and forwardly projecting side arms, one of said frame side arms having notch means near the front end thereof, a roll support having a means projecting from one end thereof adapted to rest in said notch means, a supporting arm pivoted at its rear end to the other frame arm and carrying the other end of the roll support at its front end having a cam on the rear end thereof resaca?,

having a substantially flat rear end and a substantially flat lower edge, stop means on the inside edge of said second mentioned frame side arm substantially in line with said notch means on said rst mentioned frame side arm to abut said pivoted arm to support said second mentioned end of said roll support when the means projecting from said first mentioned end thereof rests in the notch means in said first mentioned side arm to evenly support said roll support in lowered position and to permit said roll support to be raised from lowered substantially hori- Zontal position to a raised position for replacement of a roll on said roll support, a resilient leaf spring means mounted on said second mentioned side arm underneath said cam adapted to abut said lower cam edge to resiliently retain said roll support in lowered position as said roll unwinds and adapted to abut said rear Icani end to hold said pivoted arm and roll support in raised position, and a flat spring attached to said stop means having an indented portion adapted to overlie said pivoted arm in lowered position to assist in retaining said arm and roll support in lowered operative position and releasable on upward movement of said pivoted arm.

2. A roll holder consisting of a frame having a back portion adapted to be attached to a wall and forwardly projecting side arms, a

roll support, a supporting arm pivoted at vits rear end to a frame side arm and carrying an end of the roll support at its front end and having a substantially flat rear end and a substantially flat lower rear edge, stop means on said frame to abut said pivotable member to evenly support said roll support in lowered position and to permit said roll support to be raised from lowered substantially horizontal position to a raised position for replacement of a roll on said roll support, and spring means mounted on said side arm adapted to abut said lower arm edge to resiliently retain said roll support in lowered position as said roll unwinds and adapted to abut said arm rear end to hold said pivoted arm and roll support in raised position.

A roll holder consisting of a frame having a back portion adapted to be attached to a wall and forwardly projecting side arms, one of said frame side arms having notch means near the front end thereof, a roll support having means projecting from one end thereof adapted to rest in said notch means, a supporting arm pivoted at its rear end to a frame side arm and carrying an end of the roll support at its front end having a substantially flat rear end and a substantially flat 4 lower edge, stop means on said frame to abut said pivotable member to support said second mentioned end of said roll support when the means projecting from said iirst mentioned end thereof rests in the notch means in said first mentioned side arm to evenly support said roll support in lowered position and to permit said roll support to be raised from lowered substantially horizontal position to a raised position for replacement of a roll on said roll support and spring means mounted on said second mentioned side arm adapted to abut said lower arm edge to resiliently retain said roll support in lowered position as said roll unwinds and adapted to abut said arm rear edge to hold said pivoted arm and roll support in raised position.

A roll holder, consisting of a frame having a back portion adapted to be attached to a wall and forwardly projecting side arms, a roll support, a supporting arm pivoted at its rear end to a frame side arm and carrying an end of the roll support at its front end having a cam on the rear end thereof having a substantially flat rear end and a substantially flat lower edge, stop means on said frame to abut said pivotable member to evenly support said roll support in lowered position and to permit said roll support to be raised from lowered substantially horizontal position to a raised position for replacement of a roll on said roll support, and a resilient leaf spring means mounted on said side arm underneath said cam adapted to abut said lower cam edge to resiliently retain said roll support in lowered position as said roll unwinds and adapted to abut said rear cam edge to hold said pivoted arm and roll support in raised position.

5. A roll holder consisting of a frame having a back portion adapted to be attached to a wall and forwardly projecting side arms, a roll support, a supporting arm pivoted at its rear end to a frame side arm and carrying an end of the roll support at its front end having a substantially flat rear end and a substantially fiat lower edge, stop means on said frame to abut said pivotable member to evenly support said roll support in lowered position and to permit said roll support to be raised from lowered substantially hori- Zontal position to a raised position for replacement of a roll on said roll support, spring means mounted on said side arm adapted to abut said lower arm edge to resiliently retain said roll support in lowered position as said roll unwinds and adapted to abut said arm rear edge to hold said pivoted arm and roll support in raised position and a flat spring attached to said stop means having an indented portion adapted to overlie said pivoted arm in lowered position to assist in retaining said arm and roll support in lowered operative position and releasable on upward movement of said pivoted arm.
