This invention is an advertising device in the form of a splint packet. The packet embodies a plurality of splints integrally united to a base portion from which the splints are individually removable. The comb is made from cardboard, veneer, paper, or other suitable material and each splint is headed, as by dipping, with an ignition composition, a cosmetic, a medicament or other suitable composition depending upon the particular utilitarian purpose to which the the packet is adapted.

. It has heretofore been proposed to emplo splint packets as an advertising medium an in fact, the majority of book matches made are dispensed in the interests of advertising places of business and articles of commerce.

Since the advent of the splint packet, the general character of the packet, particularly with regard to book matches, has not ap preciably varied. The packets have 1nvariably been made with a cover enclosing one or more combs, each of wh1ch combs carries nine or ten splints. These splints are made from cardboard or veneer, are about one and one-half inches in length and have a width of approximately one-eighth of an inch. For the last 25 years, book matches have with the relatively long attenuated spllnts. These narrow splints of the conventional form are not individually susceptible to any useful advertising purpose'and consequently, the advertising matter carried by such packets has,

almost exclusively, been printed upon the inside or outside of the cover which affords ample space for such printing. The individual matches or cosmetic splints, per se, have heretofore served the one and onlg purpose for which their head or tip a apted them-their advertising value has been little if any.

With the fore oing considerations in mind, the object 0% the present invention is to make the device more valuable and serve a double or twofold purpose. That is to say, each splint of the comb of this invention has its normal utility as a match, cosmetic or medicament carrier, and it also has the durther and additional characteristic that it 1881. An important feature of the invention resides in the fact that the value of each individual splint, as an advertising medium, per sists or continues subsequent to its removal from the comb.

The present invention is characterized by a packet construction wherein the comb is provided with splints, each of which has a Width of at least one-seventh of its length compelling sales value for the places or prod-- and at least four times its thickness, each have heretofore been impossible of accomplishment in combs of the prior art. With such a splint it is possible to pictorially represent thereon, in roper or natural proportions, articles 0? commerce, persons and places correlated to the subject matter to be advertised, in such a natural or lifelike manner that they arrest the attention of the buying public, foster good will and promote sales to an astonishing extent.

Features of the invention, other than those adverted to, will be apparent from the hereinafter detailed. description and claims, when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings.

The accompanying drawings illustrate one practical embodiment of the invention, but the construction therein shown is to be understood as illustrative, only, and not as defining the limits of the invention.

' the drawings, 1 designates a comb comprising a base portion 2 from'one side of which projects a plurality of integral splints 3. Along the line where the spl nts are integrally united with the base, a line of scoring may be provided, so that these splints may be made easily individually removable by tearing the splints from the base. The free end portion of each s lint is provided with a neck5 of reduced width which if de sired may carry an integrally enlarged end portion 6. This end portion may, if desired, be of the same width as the neck, but if enlarged, as shown in Fig. 2, it is preferably of greater width than the neck, but of less width than the corresponding splint. In either event, each end portion 6 is adapted to carry a tip or head 7 of composition material, such as ignition material, cosmetic composition or a medicament which may be conveniently applied to the end portion 6 by dipping the combs into a bath of such composition and permitting the composition to harden. It will be noted that the size of the tip or head is preferably such that it is of less width than the width of the splint which carries it, so

that when all the splints occupy the same plane, the tips or heads will be free from contact with one another.

Bv reference particularl to Figs. 2 and 3, it will be noted that the width as of each splint 3 is enerally greater than'one-seventh the lengt y of the splint. For example, if y equals approximatel one and one-half inches, :1) shouldnot be less than three-sixteenths of an inch and is preferably made even wider in accordance with this invention. The thickness 2 of the splint should, to give the best results, be approximately one-fourth the width :1: of the splint, although, in practice, the thickness 2 may be greater or less than the dimension given.

A splint constituted as described will embody marked rigidity. If tipped or headed with an i nition com osition, it may be used as a mate and struc upon an appropriate ignition, surface without bending or breaking. Similarly, when used with a medicament or a cosmetic, the composition at the end of the tip may be applied to the person without the composition coming in contact with the hands through bending or breaking of the splint, while the line of scoring at the base of the splint ermits of its ready removal from the comb.

The pro ortion of the length of the match to its widt is such as to permit of printing or otherwise delineating upon the face of each individual lint, the picture of a human figure of H e-like proportions. These rtions are such as to permit of printing on t e face of each individual splint an individual picture correlated with any subject matter which it is'desired to advertise. Thus, it will be noted from Fig. 2, that the splint provides ample space for printing thereon, an'individual picture correlated with subject matter to be advertised. In the present instance, if it be desired to advertise a restaurant, the pictures on the individual splints may be those of waitresses holding trays. I wish it understood, however, that the invention is not limited to a splint with a picture of a human figure thereon. Any other individual picture correlated with the subject matter to be advertised may be delineated on each individual splint.

In the drawings, each splint is shown having substantially conventional thickness and length, but the Width is approximately twice that of a conventional match splint, so that it can properly act as a carrier for both the head and the pictorial lifelike representation of the individual delineated thereon.

In practice, one or more combs of the character described and shown in Fig. 2 are adapted to be bound within a cover 8 after the manner of a conventional book match packet, a staple 9 being utilized to hold the cover in position and the combs in place within the cover. Two combs are shown in the packet of Fig. 1, but the invention is not to be understood as limited to this number.

The foregoing detailed descri tion sets forth the invention in its preferre practical form, but the invention is to be understood 1 as iully commensurate with the appended claims.

Havin thus fully described the invention, what I cl aim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. As a new article of manufacture, an advertising device embodying a splint packet' having a cover, a comb secured within said cover and comprising a base portion from one edge of which extends a plurality of integral, individually removable splints, each splint having a Width of at least one-seventh of its len th, a head of composition material oneachsplint, and, on the exposed face of each in- 'dividual splint, a complete picture correlated with subject matter to be advertised, whereby each splint continues to have advertising value after removalfrom the comb.

2. As a new articleof manufacture, madvertising device embodying a splint packet having a cover, a comb secured within said cover and comprising a base portion from one edge of which extends a plurality of integral, individually removablesplints, each of which splints has a body portion provided near its free end with a reduced neck portion, said body portion having a width of at least oneseventh of the length of the splint, an enlarged end portion carried'by the neck portion, said end portion having a width greater than the neck ortion and less than the body portion, ahead of composition material ap plied to said enlarged end portion of each splint, and, on the exposed face of each splint,

a complete picture correlated with subject matter to be advertised, whereby'each s'p int continues to have advertising value after removal from the comb.

3.. As a new article of manufacture, an ad vertising device embodying a splint packet having a comb comprising a base portion from one edge of which extends a plurality of integral, individually removable splints, each splint having a width of at least one-seventh if its length, ahead of composition material on each s int and, on the exposed face of each individual s lint, a complete picture correlated with sub ect matter to be advertised, whereby each splint continues to have adver tising value after removal from the comb.

4. As a new article of manufacture, an advertising device embodying a splint packet having a comb comprising a base ortion from one ed e of which extends a p urality of integral, individually removable splints, each of which splints has a body portion provided near its end with a reduced neck portion, said body portion havin a width of at least one-seventh of the lengt of the splint, an enlarged end portion carried by the neck portion, said en portion havin a width greater than the neck portion an less than the body portion, a head of composition material a plied to said enlarged .end portion of each splint, and, on the exposed face of each splint, a complete picture correlated with subject matter to be advertised, whereby each splint continues to have advertising value after removal from the comb.

5. As a new article of manufacture, an advertising device embodying a splint packet comb having a plurality of individually removable sphnts, each of which has a width of at least one-seventh of its len th, a head of com osition material on'the free end of each 0 saidsplints, said head being of less width than the width of the splints, and, on the-exposed face of each of said splints,a complete picture correlated with sub ect matter to be advertised, whereby each splint continues to have advertising value after removal from the comb.

6. As a new article of manufacture, an advertising device embodyin a splint acket comb having a plurality of individua 1y removable splmts, each of which has a width of at least one-seventh of its length, a head of composition material on the free end of each of said splints, and, on the exposed face of each of said splints, a complete picture correlated with subject matter to be advertised, whereby each splint continues to have advertising value after removal from the comb.

7. As a new article of manufacture, an advertising device embodyin a splint packet comb having a base portion from one edge of which extends a plurality-of integral, individually removable splints, each of which has a width of at least one-seventh of its length, and, on the exposed face of each of said splints, a complete picture correlated with subject matter to be advertised, whereby each splint continues to have advertising value after removal from the comb.
