PADLOCK.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 18,169, dated September' 8, 1857.

To all whom 'it 'may concern:

Be it known that I, LINUS YALE, of Newport, in the county of Herkimer, in the State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Construction of Padlocks; and I do hereby declare that the following -is a full 'and exact description thereof, reference being had lto the accompanying drawings and to;l the letters of reference marked thereon.

The nature of my inventio-n consists in attaching two pieces of metal together by a tongue and groove in such a manner that byvsliding back and forth they will open and close a suitable hole to receive the staple.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.

I cast two pieces of metal in the form of A, and B, in Figures l, 2, 3 and 4. In A, I form a groove a, and in B, a tongue that will pass into the groove a, as shown in Fig. 5. A dowel pin d, passes into a hole e, in the point of the hook a when locked. I drill holes across thev grooved joint, as shown in Fig. 7 In those holes I place stops 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, as shown in B. In A are corresponding stops l', 2, 3, 3, 47 5', and behind those are spiral springs l, 2, 3, 4, 5". In the lower end of B, is a key hole I), (shown in Fig. 3.)

C, Fig. 6, is a key with an undulating plane or groove c cut in its side. When the key C, is ,insertedl as in Fig. 4, it places the joint in the stops on a line with the joint in the groove, and allows the part B, to be drawn down, until the stop 5, strikes the upper end of the stop notch F, and opens the hole to receive the staple, when hooked on to the stapls, B is pushed up to close the hole, when the key is withdrawn, leaving it locked on the staple.

What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The use of the tongued and grooved sliding joint, operating in concert with the jointed stops as herein described. l
