COSMETIC CONTAINER Application filed April 12, 1930. Serial No. 443,738.

My invention relates to cosmetic containers and refers particularly to containers adapted for cosmetic sticks.

Because of the soft and delicate physical condition of cosmetic sticks, such as lipsticks, eye-brow pencils and similar cosmetics, it is essential that they be so carried that they will not come into contact with other articles and with the hand when not in use, and, further, that they. be thoroughly protected from contamination when not in use.

The most practical method for accomplishing the mentioned, and other, desirable results has been found to be a container in which-there is.a cosmetic stick, or pencil, mechanism of the device being such that the stick, or pencil, may be extended from the device for use and then withdrawn into the device when not in use and the open end of the device closed to protect the stick, or pencil.

It is to be noted that there are two necessary operations, the movement of the cosmetic inwardly and outwardly, and the opening and closing of the device.

There are two classes of these devices, those in which the two operations are independent of each other, and those in which the two operations are co-ordinated, and the device of my invention is within the last mentioned class.

There are numerous devices in which the movement of the cosmetic and the opening and closing of the device are co-ordinated,,

the greater number of which require two hands for successful operation. Further,

many of them are complicated in construction, expensive to manufacture and'liable to become inoperative.

The device of my invention is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, not liable to become inoperative and is readily operated by one hand.

The simplicity, economy and efiiciency of my device will be evident upon a consideration of the accompanyin drawings, my device consisting broadly o a resilient, or flexible'band, a portion of which acts as a cover for the device, the movement of the band causing a cosmetic stick to be presented for, and removed from, a position of use, while at the same time the band is removed from, or extended across, the opening for the cosmetic.

In the accompanying drawings illustrating one form of the device of my invention, similar parts are designated by similar numerals.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of one form of the device of my invention in closed position.

The particular form of the device of my invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings comprises an outer upper casing 10 and an outer lower casing 11.

The outer upper casing has the sides 12 and 13, the front 14, the back 15, the rounded top 16, the bottom of the casing being open. The top 16 has an opening 17 and the front 14 has an elongated opening 18.

The lower casing 11 has the two sides 19 and 20, the front 21, the back 22, the rounded bottom 23, the top of the casing being open. The front 21 has an opening 24 continuous with the opening 18 of the upper casing 14 and each side 19 and 20 has an extended plate 25, having an opening 26 into which a depressed part 27 of the upper casing sides 12 and 13 are insertable to maintain the two casings together.-

Within the outer casings is an inner member," shown particularly in Figure 3, having the two sides 28, 28, the front 29, and the back 30. The front 29 has an elongated slot 31 andthe back has an elongated slot 32.

The front 29 and the back 30 are connected by the bottom 33. The sides 28 and 28 are extended beyond. the front 29 and the back 30, thus formin a flange 34, 34, which act as guides for a exible resilient member described later. The flanges 34, 34, extend upwardly beyond the top edges of the sides 28, 28, and carry members 35, 35, thus continuin the flexible memberguide.

' Wit in the outer casings and movable over the outer faces of the front 29 and the back 30, is a resilientumetallic band, or I'll)- bon, 36, which is guided by the flanges 34, 34. Fixedly attached to one end ortion of the band by means of the rivet-3 1s a cosmetic stick carrier 38 carrying the cosmetic stick 39. This rivet 37 passes through the opening 32 of the back member 30, and

hence the longitudinal movement of the band 36 will move the carrier 38 and the cosmetic stick 39 longitudinally within the inner member.

The movement of the band 36 1s accomplished by the finger piece 40 which extends through the opening, or slot, 18 and. 1S riveted to the band 36. The finger place 40 is riveted to the band 36 so that when the finger piece 40 is in its upper position the cosmetic stick 39 will have been withdrawn into the device and the portlon 36' of the band 36 will cover the open end of the 7 device.

The operation of the device is as follows o Assume that the device 1s 1n closed pos tion, as shown in Figure l, with the cosmet1c stick 39 within the device, whlch 1s closed by the band member 36, thus protecting the cosmetic stick from contamination. If now the finger piece 40 is moved downwardly, the band 36 will be moved, movlng the band member 36 from across the opening and at the same time moving the cosmetic stick 39 upwardly until the position shown in Figure 2 is obtained, thus exposing the cosmetic stick 39 for use. I

It will thus be seen that the movement of the finger piece 40 will either open the device and present the cosmetic for use, or will close the device and cause the cosmetlc to be withdrawn from use.

My device, therefore, possesses the valuable attribute of being capable of operation by the movement of a single part, thus overcoming the difiiculties and inconveniences incident to a number of movements requlrin the use of both hands of the operator.

I do not limit myself to the partlcular size, shape, number, arrangement or material of parts as shown and descrlbed as these are given simply as a means for clearly explaining the device of my mvention.

What I claim is 1. In a device of the character described, in combination, a casing having an open end and a closed end, a flexible band within said casing capable longitudinal movement across said casing opemn closi said opening, a pencil-carrier carri by sai band and capable of longitudinal movement within said casing, and exterior operating means capable of moving said band.

In a device of the character described, in combination, a casing having an o 11 end and a closed end, a flexible band wit in said casing capable of longitudinal movement across said casing opening closing said opening, a pencil-carrier carried by said band and capable of Ion itudinal movement within sald casing, an exterior 0 rating means capable of moving said ban themovement of said operatin means in one direction causing said ban to close said casing opening and move said carrier inwardly within said casing and the movement of said operating means in the reverse direction causing said band to be withdrawn from said casin opening and move said carrier outward y within said casing.

In a device of the character described, in combination, a casing having an open-end, a closed end and a longitudinal slot; a flexible band within said casing capable of longitudinal movement across said casing opening closing said opening, a pencil-carrier carried by said band and capable of longitudinal movement within said casing and an operating means attached to said band extending through said slot and capable of longitudinal movement therein, the movement of said operating means in one direction causing said band to close said casing opening and move said carrier inwardly within said casing and the movement of said operating means in the reverse direction causing said band to be withdrawn from said casing opening and move saidcarrier outwardly within said casing.

In a device of the character described, in combination, an exterior casing closed at one end and 0 en at the other end and having a longitudinal slot; a flexible band within said casing; a pencil carrier fixedly attached to said band; and operating means attached to said band and extending through said casing slot so positioned that its movement within said slot in one direction will move said carrier inwardly within said casing and move said band across the open end of said casing closing saidopen ing, and the movement of sa1d operating means in thereverse direction W11 move said carrier toward the open end of said casin and uncover said opening.

In a device of the c aracter described, in combination, an exterior casin closed at one end and 0 en at the other en and having a longitudmal slot a flexible band within said casing extending across the closed end and upwardly along the inner faces of two opposite sides of said casing, a pencilcarrier fixedly attached to one end portion of said band, operating means carried by the other end portion of said band and extending, through said casing slot, said ele-. ments eing so positioned with respect to 40 each other that a movement of said'operating means toward the open end of said casing will move said carrier to the closed end of said casing and cause a portion of said .band to cover said opening, and a. movement of saido crating meanstoward the closed end of sa1d casingwill move said carrier toward the open end of said casing and cause the covering portion of said band to be re moved from said 0 ening and guiding means for said band in the closed portion of said casing.

8. In a device of the character described, in combination, an exterior casing closed at one end and op having a longitudinal slot; an interior member havin opposed longitudinal slots in alignment with said casing slot; a flexible band positioned between said casing and said interior member extending across the closed end of said casing, a pencil carrier uring its movefixedly attached to one end portion of said band and operatin means carried by the other end of sai band and extending through-said casing slot, said elements being so positioned wlth respect to each other that a movement .of said operating means toward the open end of said casing will move said carrier to the closed end .of said casing and cause a portion of said band'to cover said opening, and a movement of said operating means toward the closed end of said casing will move said carrier toward the 0 en end of said casing and cause the covering ortion of said band to be removed from sai opening.
