Description

LIGHT REFLECTING SIGN Filed Oct. 23, 1929 /V VE/V 70/? Hu o Bruckner Patented Apr. 14, 1931 PATENT OFFICE HUGO BRUCKNER, F VIENNA, AUSTRIA.-
LIGHT-REFLECTING SIGN Application filed October 23, 1929, Serial No. 401,738, and in,Austria January 24, 1929.
Applications have been filed in Austria on the 24th January, 1929, and in Austria-on the 22nd July, 1929.
The present invention relates to a light reflecting sign adapted preferably for the use in daylight. The light reflecting sign according to the invention comprises two plates, a front plate and a back plate. The front plate is provided like a stencil with 1 letters cut out thereof or with transparent letters. The back plate disposed directly behind the front plate shows mirrored pyramidal embossments, whose reflecting surfaces are directed to the front plate or stencil.
The preferred embodiments of the invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a front view of one embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 2 shows a section taken on line ctr-b, Fig. 1.
Figs. 3 and 4 show front views of two further embodiments of the invention.
Fig. 5 is a section taken on line 0d, Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a section taken on line e-f, Fig. 4. Referring to Fig. 1 the front plate 1 of the light reflecting sign is opaque and provided with letters 2 cut out thereof like of a stencil. The letters may'also be formed of transparent materiah The front side of the back plate 3 is provided with series of mirrored elements 4. These elements are shaped according to the invention as triangular pyramids. One side m of these pyramids is inclined steeply towards the surface of the plate 3, and much shorter than each of the other sides n, o. This form and arrangement of the three sides m, n, o of the mirrored pyramids has the effect to restringe 0 as much as possible the shadows caused by the side m, the long reflecting sides '11., 0 amplifying simultaneously the luminescenting effect of the sign.
In the embodiment of the invention illustrated by Figs. 3 and 5 the mirrored triangular intermediate fields 2 between the pyramidal elements of the back plate 3, are inclined backwards. so as toreflect the rays in a more flat direction to the observer. By this arrangement the reflecting sign appears field I, II, III. The small stripes between luminescent not only for observers to the right and to the left hand of the sign but also for observers standing exactly in front of the sign.
In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in Figs. 4 and 6 the mirrored pyramids of one horizontal row are disposed on the upperside of the intermediate fields of the next row, so as to offer a kind of zig-zag arrangement. Further in this embodiment only an inner triangular portion of each intermediate field z is inclined backwards and this inclined portion forms a triangle p, g, r being smaller than the full intermedlate the corresponding parallel edges of an inner triangle p, g, 7" and the field I, II, III prevent a direct abutting of the embossed pyramids and the inclined intermediate fieldsJ By this arrangement together with the zig-zag .arrangement of the pyramid rows the appearance of continuous shadow-lines is avoided.
I claim 1. Light reflecting sign composed of a front plate with transparent letters and a back plate arranged behind the front plate and provided on its front side with mirrored triangular pyramids one side of each pyramid being inclined steeply towards the back plate and much shorter than each of the two other sides.
2. Light reflecting sign composed of a front plate with transparent letters and a back plate arranged behind the front plate 5 and provided on its front side with mirrored triangular pyramids in zig-zag arrangement, one side of each pyramid being inclined steeply towards the back plate and much shorter than each of the two other sides and triangular light reflecting fields on the back plate enclosed by the pyramids.
3. Light reflecting sign composed of a front plate with transparent letters and a back plate arranged behind the front plate and provided on its front side with mirrored triangular pyramids in zig-za arrangement, one side of each pyramid eing inclined steeply towards the back plate and much shorter than each of the two other sides and triangular light reflecting fields on the back plate enclosed by the pyramids and inclined backwards. Y
4. Light reflecting sign composed of a front plate with transparent letters and a back plate arranged behind the front plate and provided on its front side with mirrored triangular pyramids in zig-zag arrangement,
one side of each pyramid being inclined steeply towards the back plate and much shorter than each of the two other sides, triangular 1 light reflecting fields on the back plate, enclosed by the pyramids forming smaller trian ular fields inclined backwards.
n testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
HUGO BRUCKNER.
