Description

N. PETERS, PHoTO-uTHOGRAPl-IER, WASHINGTON. n 04 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIoE.
AROHIBALD R. BYRKIT, OF FAIRFIELD, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN KNIFE RACKS ANo RESTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 178,112, dated May 30, 1876; application filed March 13,1876.
' same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making part of this specification.
This invention is in the nature of an improvement in plate attachments for holding knife, fork, and napkin; and the invention.
consists in an attachment for holding knife, fork, and napkin to the plate, constructed with a spring, the elastic force of which confines the attachment to the plate, as is hereinafter more particularly described. t
In the accompanying sheet of drawings, Figure 1 is a plan or top view of my invention; and Fig. 2, a section ofsame in line mm, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the several figures.
A represents a plate, to the edge of which are confined a knife-holder, a, a fork-holder, b, and a napkin-holder, 0. These holdersmay be constructed of wire or any suitable material, and are designed to hold the knife, fork, and napkin when not in use. These holders may be of any desirable shape suited to the purpose, and they are provided with clamps d, the upper jaws of the clamps projecting a little over the upper edge of theplate, and the lower jaws or portions of the clamps extending Well under the edge of the plate, and'they are secured to a circular wire spring, 13,011 which they are to some extent adjustable.
My plate attachments being constructed substantially as above described, they are secured to the plate by inserting its edge into the several clamps d of theknife, fork, and napkin holders tab, and c, and to some extent opening the wire spring B, placing it under the edge of the plate, and allowing it to contract, when its elasticity will'draw the several clamps closely in contact with the edge of the plate and hold them in the desired position.
The attachments are removed by again expanding the wire spring and permitting the clamps to be detached from the edge of the plate. 'The knife and fork holders may be in the form of racks, into which the knives and forks are placed when not in use.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isy 1. A knife, fork, and napkin holder adapted for attachment to plates, constructed with a spring, adapted to encircle the under side of the plate, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. A knife, fork, and napkin holder adapted for attachment to plates, constructed with a spring encircling the under side of the plate,
and confining-clamps engaging with the edge I of the plate, substantially as described.
AROHIBALD R. BYRKIT.
