crossheads 11 form leg members for the stand to permit of the movement of the frame over a oor surface. The beam 10 in the construction shown is composed of two partsJ between which is mounted at spaced intervals, two upwardly directed square socket mem- I5 bers 13 which project above the upper face of the beam 10 and serve to support standards 14 in connection with the base. The standards 14 consist of square tubings provided within one end thereof with smaller 8U tubings,welded or otherwise secured in osi tion, and the ends 15 of which project to orm coupling members insertible into the socket members 13 and also into the ends of adjaycent standards, it being understood that one standard is placed upon the other in the construction of the display stand, especially in employing more than one shelf member. f I also employ shelf members 16, two of separate shelf members, the structure thereof is the same and the description of one shelf member will apply to the other. Each shelf member 16 is composed of separate parts 16a and 16b each part constituting a shelf part which may cooperate with the other part to form a flat shelf or an inclined shelf, or which may be independently adjustable with relation to the other part to form thereof independent shelf part-s. Each part 16a-16h of the shelf member 16 is provided with a board or slab 17 which may be composed of metal, wood or a composition of any kind or class, and these? slabs carry on their bottom faces bracket portions 18 arranged in alinement with the standards 14 employed and at one side of recesses 19 on the adjacent edges of the slabs and through which the standards 14 pass as seen in Fig. 2 of the drawing. The brackets 18 are riveted or otherwise secured to the slab 17, said brackets being L-shaped in form in cross section, and the projecting flange is provided with with spaced apertures 20, by means of which one end of brace levers 21 may be adjustably coupled with relation to the separate parts 16-16b of the shelf member. rlie inner or adjacent ends of the brackets 18 have bearing portions 22 which overlap one another and are pivoted together and to a shelll supporting block 23 adjustably mounted in connection with the standards 14.
The block 23 comprises an oblong body part 24 in the form of a short tube, and the standards 14 are adapted to fit snugly in one end of said body 24, a U-sha ed shoe piece 25 fitting in the other end o said body and adapted to be forced into engagement with the standard 14 by means of a clamp screw 26, the pointed end 27 of which is adapted to engage the outer surface of the standard 14. The screw 26 has a large head 28 by means of which the same may be operated by hand. Welded or otherwise secured to the inner face of that part of the body 24 through which the standard 14 passes is an attaching or mounting strip 29, the upper end of which carries the pivot pin 30 in the form of a loose rivet which passes through the bearings on the ends of the brackets 18, forming the pivoted connection of said brackets, and in this way, the parts 16a and 16b of the shelf member are mounted in connection with the supporting block 23. A bolt 3l is mounted in the lower end of the strip 29, and is provided with a winged nut 32 for engagement with the outer ends of the levers 2l toV suport said levers in different positions of adjustment in connection with the block 28, the last named end of said levers 21 having spaced apertures 33 through which the bolt 31 is adapted to pass.
It will be understood that the pivotal connection of the separate parts 16 and 16b of the shelf member as above described, forms a hinge construction. In addition to this hinge construction, I also provide at the ends of the shelf member, hinges 34: for pivoting the parts 16 and 16" together independent of the supporting blocks 23 employed in connection with each shelf member. The hinges 34 are supported in connection with a peripherial flange or rim portion 35 on the shelf member or the separate parts thereof, said flange extending above and below the slabs 17. In the construction shown, and as seen in Fig. 7 of the drawing, said flanges are composed of wood or other strips 35L enclosed with a sheet metal casing 35h. The inner faces of the strips are grooved as seen at 36 to receive the outer edges of the slabs 17. The flanges or rim portions 35 are secured to the slabs 17 in any desired manner and form means for supporting articles placed on the shelf member 4or the separate parts thereof against displacement, especially when the shelf member or other of its parts are arranged in an inclined position as seen at the right of Fig. 7 of the drawing.
It will be seen from the foregoing that each shelf member when assembled, includes the two parts 16a and 16b with the brackets 18 thereon arranged in s aced relation and with two supporting bloc (s 28 on each shelf member adjacent the brackets and in alinement with the recesses 19 to receive the stan d ards 14 which are detachably coupled with the base 10 of the device, two or more of the standards being placed one upon the other and interlocked by the couplings 15, the lower portion of the standards entering the sockets 13 as clearly seen in Fig. 1 of the drawing. In assembling the complete device, the standards are first mounted upon the base, and the lowermost shelf member to be employed in a predetermined display stand is passed downwardly over the standards with the screw 26 in an outward position. lVhen the shelf memi ber has been adjusted to the desired heighth, the screw 26 is operated to tixedly retain the blocks 23 of such shelf member in position, after which, another shelf member which may be of the same or less dimensions is passed downwardly over the standards and secured in position in the manner of securing the first named shelf member. Any number of shelf members may be placed one upon the other and secured to the standards and adjusted to required or desired spaced relation as will be apparent.
It will also be understood that the separate parts 1ct-16b of each shelf member may be retained in horizontal position as seen in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing, or either of said parts may be raised or lowered by the adjustment of the brace levers 2l. In Fig. 7 of the drawing. the part 16" of one shelf member is shown in a lowered and inclined position. the same to be swung on the pivot pin il() and the hinges 31. It will also be apparent that both most standard employed to form a flat table member, and the member or members beneath such flat table member may constitute shelves for supporting or storing boxes or cases or the articles thus displayed for sale or other purposes, on the table member.
It will be apparent from the foregoing, that my display stand by virtue of its construction and `principally the interchangeability of the parts and the adjustment thereof, will facilitate the attractive display of articles of various kinds and classes in establishments of any kind, and also serve with utility, as a bench or table member.
Vhile I have shown certain details of construction for carrying my invention int'o effect, it will be apparent that I am not necessarily limited to the structural details herein shown and described, and various changes therein and modifications thereof may be made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
v Another distinctive feature of my invention resides in the fact that the several parts of my improved stand when knocked down or detached one from the other facilitates the compact wrapping or crating of all of the parts of a particular display stand unit in a comparatively small package. L
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A display stand of the class described -comprisingspaced rodlike standards, a shelf member adapted to be detachably and adjustably mounted on said standards and comrising a unit structure consisting of side shelf parts, tubular couplings arranged intermediate said parts and inwardly ofthe end portions thereof and through which .said standards are adapted to pass, said couplings including common pivots for the shelf parts whereby said'shelf parts may be independentl adjustable at either and bothv sides of the stand, and said couplings including brace arms on said shelf parts and adjustably mounted in connection with said couplings to support the shelf parts in different positions of adjustment.

A display stand of -the class described comprising spaced rod-like standards, a shelf member adapted to be dctachably and adjustably mounted on said standards and coin- -1 prising a unit structure consisting of said shelf Qparts, tubularI couplings arranged interme iate said parts and inwardly of the end portions thereof and through which said standards are adapted to pass, said couplings including common pivots for the shelf parts whereby said shelf parts may be independently adjustable at either and both sides of the stand, said couplings including brace arms on said shelf parts and adjustably mounted? in connection with said couplings to support the shelf parts in different positions of {adjustment, and said arms being adjustably supported in connection with said shelf parts.

A display stand of the class described comprising spaced rod-like standards, a shelf member adapted to be detachably and adjustably mounted on said standards and comprising a unit structure consisting of side shelf parts, tubular couplings arranged intermediate said parts and inwardly of the end portions thereof and through which said standards are adapted to pass, said couplings including common pivots for the shelf parts whereby said shelfparts may be independently adjustable at either and both` sides of the stand, said couplings including brace arms on said shelf parts and adjustably mounted in connection with said couplings to support the'shelf parts in different positions of adjustment, and means on said couplings for securing the same in different positions of adjustment on said standards.

A display stand comprising a base member, a. standard on said base member, a shelf member detachably and adjustably Vsupported in connection with said standard, means for retaining said shelf member in predetermined positions of adjustment on said standard, and said shelf member being composed of separate shelf parts having a common pivot on said means and arranged centrally with reference to said standard and extending at opposite sides of said standard and adjustable relatively to each other on said pivot.
5.' A display stand comprising a base member, a standard on said base member, a shelf member detachably and adjustably supported in connection with said standard, means.
for retaining said shelf member in predetermined positions of adjustment on said standard, said shelf member being composed of separate shelf parts having a common pivot on said means and arranged centrall with reference to said standard and exten ing at opposite sides of said standard and adjustable relatively to each other on said pivot,and means involvinof brace levers adjustably coupled with said liist named means for supporting said shelf parts in different positions of adj ustment.
G. A display stand comprising a base member. a standard on said base member, a shelf member detachably and adjustably supported in connection with said standard,
means for retaining said shelf member in predetermined positions of adjustment on said standard, said shelf member being composed of separate shelf parts havingl a common pivot on said means and arranged centrally with reference to said standard and extending at opposite sides of said standard and adjustable relatively to each other on said pivot, means involving brace levers adjustably coupled with said first named means for supporting said shelf parts in different positions of adjustment, said parts of the shelf member having peripherial flanges, and said standard being composed of separate detachably coupled parts.

A display stand comprising a base member, a standard on said base member, a shelf member detachably and adjustably supported in connection with said standard, means for retaining said shelf member in predetermined positions of adjustment on said standard, said shelf member being composed of separate shelf parts having a common plvot on said means and arranged centrally with reference to said standard and extending at o posite sides of said standard and adjustab e relatively to each other on said pivot, means involvin brace levers adjustably coupled With said rst named means for supporting said shelf parts in different positions of adjustment, and said brace levers being adjustably coupled with said shelf parts.

A display stand comprising a base member, a standard on said base member, a shelf member detachably and adjustably supported in connection with said standard, means for retaining said shelf member in predetermined positions of adjustment on said standard, said shelf member being composed of separate shelf parts having a common pivot on said means. and arranged centrally with reference to said standard and extending at o posite sides of said standard and adjustablb relatively to each other on said pivot, means involving brace levers adj ustably coupled With said first named means for supporting said shelf arts indifferent positions of adjustment, sald brace levers being adjustably coupled with said shelf parts, and said shelf member including the separate parts, said supporting means and t-he brace levers constituting a unit detachable with respect to the standard.

A display stand of the class described comprising spaced standards, a shelf member Y detachably and adjustably coupled with said standards, means at spaced intervals on said shelf member into and through which the standards are adapted to pass for retaining the shelf member in predetermined positions of adjustment on the standards, and said shelf member being composed of pivotally coupled parts arranged at opposite sides of t-he standards and adjustable relatively to each other, and the pivots of said parts being common and arranged on said means and centrally with reference to said standards.
10, A display stand of the class described comprising spaced standards, a shelf member detachably and adjustably coupled with said standards, means at spaced intervals on said shelf member into and through which the standards are adapted to pass for retaining the shelf member in predetermined positions of adjustment on the standards, said shelf member being composed of pivotally coupled parts arranged at opposite sides of the standards and ad'ustable relatively to each other, the pivots o said parts being common and arranged on said means and-centrally with reference to said standards, and means adjustable with reference to said lirst named means for retaining said parts in dif- Jferent positions of adjustment.

A display stand of the class described i comprising spaced standards, a shelf member detachably and adjustably coupled with said standards, means' at spaced intervals on said shelf member into and throughvwhich the standards are adapted to pass for retaining the shelf member in predetermined positions of adjustment on the standards, said shelf member being composed of pivotally coupled parts arranged at opposite sides of` the standardsA and ad ustable relatively to each other, the pivots o said parts being common and arranged on said means and centrally with reference to said standards, means adjustable with reference to said first named means for retaining said parts in different positions of adjustment, said last named means comprising oppositely disposed levers and said levers being adjustably coupled with said shelf parte, and said standards comprising tu ular members with means on one end of one member for coupling the same with an adjacent member.

A display stand of the class described comprising spaced standards, a shelf member detachably and adjustably coupled with said standards, means at spaced intervals on said shelf member into and through which the standards are adapted to pass for retaining the shelf member-in predetermined positions of adjustment on the standards, said shelf member being composed of pivotally coupled parts arranged at opposite sides of the standards and adjustable relatively to each other, the pivots of said parts being common and arranged on said means and centrally with reference to said standards, means adjustable with reference to said first named means for retaining said parts in different positions of adjustment, said last named means comprising oppositely disposed levers and said levers being adjustably coupled with said shelf parts, said standards comprising tubular members with means on one end of one member for coupling the same with an adjacent member, and another shelf member yas similar to the first named shelf member and detachably and adjustably coupled with said standa-rds and being of less dimensions than the first named member and positioned thereabove. n

In a display stand of the class described a shelf unit comprising independent shelf parts, tubular shelf couplings intermediate said parts and at spaced intervals thereon for mounting said shelf parts on supports and for movably coupling said shelf parts on a pivot common to both, arranged on said cou alings, and said couplings including means or retaining the shelf unit in connection with said supports.

In a 'display stand of the `class described, a shelf unit comprising independent shelf parts, tubular shelf couplings intermediate said parts and at spaced intervals thereon for mounting s aid shelf parts on supports andA for movably coupling said shelf parts on a pivot common to both, arranged on said couplings, said couplings including means for retaining the shelf unit in connection with said supports, and levers on said shelf parts and adjustably att-ached to said tubular couplings.
