This invention relates to looks.
Its purpose is to providea lock which can be used, for instance at night, as a combination lock, and which by changing the position of some of the parts can be used at other times as an ordinary lock,operable by means of a key.
Extending through to the outside of the door is a part of the lock casing in which is a member which can be turned by inserting a key, which is properly cut and-formed, this member havingon the outside a series of numbers, such as are used on dial locks. By means of ashifting screw, the head of which projects through the back or inside of the door, the parts can be so shifted that merely by turning a key, inserted inithe memher at the outside of the door, the bolts can bewithdrawn andthe lock unlocked, or, by
' shifting the parts to another position, it is necessary not only to use the key to turn this member but, also, to turn it back and forth, as in a combination or dial lock. r

The inside part of my lock, includes the substantially box-shaped metal casing G fastened on the inside of door A. as by means of four screws 4, 4, 4, 4. 5is a metal cover plate for casing G.
The look really comprises two parts. One is the casing G andthe parts carried in it, and the other is a cylindrical metal member, indicated generally by B, which extends through a hole 10 in door A. This includes a knob 150 which is carried by a square shaft 151 which extends through into the inside and carries a locking finger 159 and an unlocking finger 152. The nose or tip of finger 159 engages an arm 29 on rocker M when knob 150 is turned and brings the parts from the position shown in Fig. 3 to that shown in Fig. 9. l
As the point of contact between finger 152 and finger 159 bears such relation to the pivots 24 and 151 as to be almost on dead center, the keeper 26 is held substantially out of action and the door is locked.
The door can be unlocked by turning knob 150 from the inside or by turning cam H by key F from the outside of the door when pin engages finger 152 lifting it and thus finger 159, thereby releasing catch 156 so that spring 153 acting on the sides of the tail 7 on finger 152 turns it to position of Fig. 3,
and allows the spring 22 to unlock the door.
This spring 153 is held between the pins 154 and 155 and is bent at 156 to form a catch to engage a small projection on the hub which carries the fingers 152 and 159 as shown in Fig. 9. The spring can be dispensed with, if desired, as shown in Fig. 10.
As shown in Fig. 10,'by changing the shape of arm 29 as shown at 429 and by changing the shape of finger 159 as shown at 459 so that the latter presents a flat surface at 458 to arm 429, the force tending to move arm 429 in the direction of the arrow acts on a dead center towards pivot 151 and the parts are held in that position with no spring and with no brake.
Other means may be used to lock the door from the inside by holding the bolts, or such means may be omitted altogether.
For convenience in some of the claims, I will call the front that side of the look from which the barrel projects, and the side where the knob 150 projects, the back.
I claim:
1. The combination in a lock casing which houses a bolt and a returning spring therefor; of a pivoted rocker arm one end connecting with the bolt and the other end having a dog in operative relation with a series of slotted discs; said series of slotted discs revoluble on shiftable carrier mechanism, the outside disc having a contact pin;
' said shiftable carrier mechanism for said series of slotted discs and for a dog; said dog pivoted to the shiftable carrier mechanism and having a slotted jaw spaced outside of said outside disc; means operative from the back of the casing to move the shiftable carrier mechanism, dog and series of, discs axially; a revoluble operating cam having a turning slot and so positioned as to engage the dog and having an inside pin in position to engage said outside contactpin or the aw of the dog according to theposition of the" shiftable carrier: mechanism; and a barrel atthe front which is marked with dial numbers," said barrel beingturnable only by a key which fits pins inside the casing, and having a turning rod fixed to the barrel and which enters the turning slot in said cam; to gether with a knob turnable from theback of the lock casing carried by a spindle which extends inside the casing and has a finger so positioned as to move the rocker arm into a substantially dead center position and thereby hold the bolt against the returning spring.
2. The combination in a lock having a bolt and a returning spring therefor; of a pivoted rocker arm one end connecting with the bolt and the other end having a dog in operative relation with a series of slotted discs; said series of slotted discs revoluble on shiftable carrier mechanism, the outside disc having a contact pin; said shiftable carrier mechanism for said series of slotted discs and for a dog; said dog latch pivoted to the shiftable carrier mechanism and having a slotted jaw spaced outside of said outside disc;means to move the shiftable carrier mechanism, dog and series of discs axially; a revoluble operating cam so positioned as to-engage the dog and having an inside pin in position to engage said outside contact pin or the jaw of the dog according to the position of the shiftable carrier mechanism; and a barrel positioned at the front of the lock and connected to the cam, such barrel having an outside numbered dial and being turnable only by the right key; together with means from the back side of the lock to hold the bolts in looking position.
3.
