UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MONROE ROSS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN SYRINGE ATTACHMENTS FOR COMMODES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 172,344, dated January 18, 1876; application filed December 24, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MONROE Ross, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Syringe; and I do hereby declare that the .following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference bein g had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The natureof my invention relates to the construction and arrangement of a commode with syringe attachment, whereby the person seated on the commode can apply the syringe; and consists in thecombination of the bowl and a compressible bulb, and in the combina tion of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, andpointed out by the claims.
In the annexed drawings, Figure l is a plan view of my invention, and Figs. 2 and 3 are vertical sections of the same.
A represents a box or case of any suitable dimensions, provided .with a lid, B, which may be hinged thereto or slide thereon, or in any other desired manner, so as to be easily opened and closed, as required. Orepresents the basin or bowl, provided around its upper edge with an outwardly-projecting flange, a. This bowl or basin is put down through the top of the case until the flange a. rests upon the ledge b within the flange d of the case. The bowl is then held in place by means of buttons 0 0 entering recesses on the rim or flange a of the bowl. The bottom of the bowl O is made concave on the under side, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. In one side of the bowl or basin is formed a curved tubular projection, D, which extends both into the bowl and outward from the same. On the upper or inner end of the tube 1) is placed a flexible tube, E, having at its other end a syringe-tube, Gr, connected to it. The syringe-tube G should, of course, as in the syringes generally in use, be removable and changeable, so that a suitable tube may be put on, according to the person using it, and the purpose for which it is used. The
lower end of the tubular projection D is, by a short flexible tube, I, connected with the bulb H, which is placed under the concave bottom of the bowl or basin 0, upon a dishshaped plate, J. This plate is pivoted near the inner end to a bent lever, L, which passes out through a slot in the side of the case A.
This lever may either be pivoted to a short post within the case A, as shown, or in the slot in the side thereof; and I contemplate to so arrange it in a full-sized machine that the pivot-pin of the lever can be easily taken out, and the lever be placed within the case when not in use.
In using this device, the bulb H is first filled with the fluid to be injected, and placed in position on the plate J. The person then seated upon the bowl or basin 0 adjusts the syringetube G asrequired, and then, by simply turning the lever L outward, the bulb H is compressed between the plate J and the bottom of the bowl, so that the fluid therein is forcibly ejected through the tubes.
The bulb H may by another tube be connected with a vessel containing the fluid to be injected, and then, by working the lever back and forth, any desired quantity may be used.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. ,The bowl 0, in combination with the elastic or compressible bulb H, arranged upon the outside surface of the bowl, and with the operative mechanism, substantially for the purpose set forth.
The combination of the lever L, pivoted dish-shaped plate J, bulb H, and bowl or basin 0, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
3. The combination of the case A, bowl 0, with tubular projection D, syringe-tubes E Gr I, bulb H,-dish-shaped plate J, and lever L, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MONROE ROSS.
