To the attainment of the above broadly stated objects and others which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the improvement resides in certain details of construction, combination and operative association of parts, a satisfactory embodiment of which is illustrated by the accompanying drawings.

As disclosed by the drawings, my improvement contemplates the employment of a flat base 1, having spaced upstanding plates at and adjacent to one end thereof. The outer plate is indicated by the numeral y 2 and the inner plate by the numeral 3".

Arranged for slidable movement on the ase there is a plate 6. This plateis centrally secured to a block 7, and the block is of a width e ualing that of the opening in the base and has its sides grooved, asat 8, to receive the tongues 4 therein. The plate .6

has secured on the outerface thereof a card receptacle, also fixed to and supported by the block 7 As far as the description has progressed, it will be noted that the moved longitudinally on the base toward the plate 3 so thatlbooks arranged on the base will be held between the said plates 3 and 6. Preferably, however, .I provide means for automatically moving the plate 6 toward the plate 3. This means simply comprises a helical spring 10 that has its ends fixed-t0 the confronting ends or faces of the blocks 7 and the plate 2, the said spring being, of course, arrangedin' the central opening in the base 1 and disposed below the lower edge of the plate 3.

The foregoing description refers to the construction disclosed in Figures 1 to 3 of the drawings.

In Figures 4 to 6 I have illustrated a plate 6 will be second and slightly modified form of the j invention. In these figures the base 11 is constructed similar to that previously described, but I let in the top of the base at the center thereof a transverse partition plate 12. This plate is, of course firmly fixed to the base, while slidable on the base at the opposite sides of the partition plate 12 there are other similarly formed plates 13 and 14 respectively. The plates 13 and 14 have their lower edges centrall formed with extensions in the nature of dzpending and outwardly extending blocks 15 and 16 respectively, and the sides of these blocks are grooved to receive therein the tongues 17 on the side walls provided by the central opening in the base. 11. The block 16 on the plate 14 has its outer edge formed with an upstanding wall 18, and with side walls 19 which define with the wall 18 a card compartment, while the block 15 has its outer edge formed with an upstanding plate 20 that provides the upper face of the plate 13 with a letter rack. 'On the lower edge of the central portion of the partition or division. late 12 there is a dependin element 21 to w ich is attached to the en s of helical plate 12, but when the frictional en agement betweenthe grooves and the bloc s 15 and 16 and the tongues 17 is sufficient to prevent free sliding of the said blocks 13 and 14, the springs 22 and 23, may if desired, be dispensed with.

The simplicityof my improvement and the advantages thereof, will, it is thought be perfectly apparent to those skilled in the art to which such inventions relate when the foregoing description has been read in connection with the accompanying drawings, but I do not, of course, wish to be restricted to the precise details of construction herein set forth and therefore hold myself entitled to make such changes therefrom as fairly fall within the scope of what I claim.

Having described the invention,I claim A book holder comprising a fiat base, having a central slot therethrough, and the side walls provided thereby beingformed with longitudinally extending channels, an outer and an inner plate secured to and adjacent one end of the base, the space therebetween adapted for the reception of letters or the like, a strip closing the opposite and open end of the base, a vertically disposed plate arranged transverselyof the base, a block to which the last mentioned plate is secured,

said block designed to be received in the opening of the base and having its edges grooved to receive the mentioned tongues therein, and a helical spring having one end fixed to the block and its second end fixed to the first mentioned plate and said spring being arranged in the mentioned opening in the base.
