DEVICE FOR PREVENTING THE BUBSTING OF WATER PIPES.
Application filed July 14, 1927. Serial No. 205,667.
This invention relates to new and useful impr vements in water systems and aims to provide means whereby water pipes leading into buildings may be prevented from bursting in the event the water therein freezes.
In carrying out my invention there is provided a fragile material bulb or chamber having communication with the water pipe and being located within the building and that in the event the water in the pipe becomes frozen will burst, after which the water will flow from a drain pipe and thus save the piping from damage.
The invention further aims to provide a device of this character that is in the form or an attachment and of such a nature as to permit of its installation within a water line within the interior of the building, and this without requiring unusual skill and great expenditure.
In the drawing wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a detail. sectional'view of my improved device as associated with an interior water pipe, and
Figure 2 is a horizontal section thereof.
Now having particular reference to the drawing. A. designates a section of water pipin within the interior of a building that is in the present instance equipped with a T-coupling B. In carrying out my invention there is provided a nipple 5 constructed for threaded engagement within the intermediate nipple b of the pipe line T-coupling B. the inner end of this nipple being of enlarged diameter and internally threaded for receiving the open threaded neck of a bulbous shaped chamber 6 preferably of glass, but of any suitable material that will readily break under expansion.
The invention further consists of a suitable container 7 formed at the center of its bottom wall with an opening through which the lower end of the nipple 5 is extended prior to the threading-of said nipple 5 into the intermediate nipple b of the pipe line T coupling B. The area-of this member 7 is such as to entirely enclose the bulbous shaped chamber 6, said container being open at its upper end and externally threaded for receiving a conventional threaded cap 8. The bottom wall of the container is formed at one side of the previously mentioned opening with a threaded opening 9 within which is threaded one end of a drain pipe 10 that is extended to any predetermined point out side the building. Arranged over the opening 9 in said bottom wall of the container is a suitable strainer screen 11 to prevent any particles of the material from the fragile chamber 6 from passinginto the drain pipe 10.
It will therefore be obvious that a certain amount of the water-flowing through the piping A will pass into the bulbous shaped chamber 6, and that in the event the water becomes frozen in the line, the said chamher 6 will break so that the water may flow from the line into the container 7 and thence into the drain pipe 10.
Having thus described the invention what I claim as new is I 1. In a device for water pipes, a chamber constructed of material readily breakable under the expansion of the water when the same becomes frozen, meansfor establishing communication between the chamber and the water pipes, a closed container surrounding said chamber, and a drain pipe leading from the container whereby the water may becomes broken.
2. In a device for water pipeaa T-fitting within that portion of the pipe line within the building, a fragile chamber, means for facilitating the connection of the chamber to the intermediate nipple of said T-fitting so that the chamber will have communication with the pipe line, and a water trapping container arranged around said chamber and having a drain opening therein.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
WILLIAM HERRON ROBISON.
