IMPROVEMENT IN WINDOW-BEAD FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 167,207, dated August 31, 1875; application filed July 22, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, AUGUST F. WERNER, of the city of Rochester, in'the county of Monroe and btate of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Win- (low-Stops; and 1 do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a window, showing my improvement. Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross-section in line a: a; of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the hookand-eye connection. Fig. 4 is a section in liney 3 looking upward, and showing the pivoted fastenings at the top for locking the stops in place.
My improvement relates to window-stops secured by fastenings which allow ready removal of the stop for washing the windows, 85c. Devices are in use for this purpose in which the stop is secured by springs, latches, bolts, 850., which pass from the stop into sockets in the side of the casing. The object of my invention is to render both the outer and inner stops readily removable, and consists of pivoted buttons at the top of the window, shutting over the stops, in combination with hook-and-eye fastenings at the sides for holding the stop firmly in place, as will be. more fully described.
A represents the outer and B the inner removable stop or strip, on one side of the window. These are constructed in the ordinary way, and applied in place to hold the sashes O O to the casing D. On the inner face of these stops, at suitable distance apart, are screwed plates at at, having inclined or angular hooks b b standing outward; and on the corresponding sides of the casing are secured corresponding plates 0 0, having slots or eyes d d. The hooks engage with the eyes, shutting down therein in an angular direction, and. constitute the side fastenings to the stops.
The inclined bottom of the hooks, when inserted, slide down upon the bottom edge of the eyes, so that when the stops are pressed down to rest the lower end of the stops on the sill, the hooks hold the stops in firm contact with the casing, and the stops cannot be removed, and no loose motion or rattling can occur. f and g are two buttons, forming the upper fastenin gs, located in the upper corner of the casing, over the stops A A. They are halved into the upper molding p of the Window, so as to stand flush therewith, the pivoted ends being covered by the molding, while the heads project outward to cover the upper ends of the stops, which are cut away at that point sufficiently for the purpose. The under side of the heads are provided with depressions h h, which form finger-holds for operating the buttons. The end of the inner fastening g is made rounded or angular, leaving a projecting corner, i, Fig. 4, by which means it can strike into the groove or rabbet that holds the inner stop or parting-strip, and still turn outward free of the groove in removing the stop. To enable this fastening to be turned back out of the way, the molding 11 has a socket, 4".
When the stops are in place the buttons are turned in flush with the outer edge of the molding, and the whole presents a uniform and finished appearance. To'remove the stops, the outer button is turned outward, removing it thereby from over the first stop. This stop is then removed, the lower sash lifted from place, and the inner stop and upper sash can then be removed in the same way. My invention is specially adapted to the removal of both stops.
Heretofore, so far as I am aware, the fastenings have been on the side only, and consist of spring latches or pawls which engage together. These are liable to work endwise and leave the stops loose, so that they rattle or get out of place. In my invention the inclined hooks b, fitting in the eyes cl as the stops are pressed down, draw the stop close up to the casing, by which means it is prevented from rattling, and also from warping outward. The buttons f g then being turned over the stops, lock them down so that there is no possibility of escape. The whole, when secured, presents the ordinary appearance. The distinctive features of the invention are the combination, with the self-tightening side fastenings, of the top button-fastening, as described.
Having thus described my invention, I do not claim broadly a self attaching or removable window-stop; but
