This invention relates to new and useful improvements in lanterns. I
One object 'of'the invention is to, produce a lantern of the character described which has been specially designed for use in giving signals and requiring different colored lights, and has been particularly deslgned for useby trainmen. v
' Another object ofthe invention resides in the provision of a lantern having a transparent colorless globe and'also equipped with a colored lens which may be moved into active position, when a colored signal 1s required, and into inactive position when said lens is not to be used.
l With the above and other objects in view this invention has particular relation to certain novel features of constructlon,operation and arrangement of parts, an example of which is given in this specification and illus trated in the accompanying drawings, wh'erein: 1' p Figure 1 shows a front elevation of the lantern withthe colored lens in active position.

This dome isslightlyflared downwardly and its lower end seats on the upper end of the globe i. The dome has a crown flange, of skirt 6, and a cage-like structure 7 is secured to this skirt and forms a guard which surrounds and protects the globe 1 and base 1, and the bottom ring 'of this guardforms a wide base support for the lantern. A suitable bail or handle 8 is provided. This bail is of an inverted U-shape and the free ends of its side arms are attached to the side brackets 9, 9' carried by Glamped around the top partof the guard 5 there is anannular anchor ring, or band 10. Rigidly secured to one side of this band and upstanding therefrom there is a clamp 11 whose upper end isinwardly turned and rigidly secured to the opposite sides ofthe band there is an outwardly projecting clamp 12 whose free end is downwardlyturned.
There is a substantially rectangular lens frame13, wherein is mounted the lenslt, of colored glass. The sides of the lens frame are formed into inwardly diverging wings 15, 15 whose free ends rest against the guard 7 when the lens 14: is in active position. p v s 'Flexibly connected links 16 and 17 are provided, one of which is hinged to the upper edge of the lens frame and the other 7 of which is hinged to the clamp 12. The lower edge of the lens frame has a connecting link 18 hinged thereto, at its upper end, and its lower end is formed with the spaced clamp fingers 19, adapted to engage the bottom ring of the guard? to anchor the lens frame and lens in active positiorn When the colored lens is to be used it is anchored in active position as shown in Fig ures 1 to 3. lVhen it is not desired to use a colored signal the lower end of the link 18 is released, the lens frame 13 is moved upwardly and then inwardly between the arms of the bail 8 and the links 16, 17 will swing around into position beneath the lens frame, as shown in Figure 4:.1 One edge of said lens frame may be then engaged underneath the overturned upper end of the clamp 11 and the lug 20 carried by the inner side of the link 18, is engaged with the downwardly turned end of the clamp 12 and the lens frame 13 is thereby held in active position.
What I claim is:
1. A lantern having a globe and a guard surrounding said globe, a lens frame, a lens in said frame, connections for anchoring said lens frame to said guard in position to associate said lens with the lantern globe, said connections being flexible to permit said. frame and lens to swing into inactive position above the lantern and shoulders projecting laterally from said lens.
2. A lantern having aglobe and a guard surrounding said globe, a lens frame, a lens in said frame, connections for anchoring said lens frame to said guard in position to associate said lens with the lantern globe,
adapted to releasably engage the bottom part of the lantern, said lens being movable intoactive position in association with the globe and into inactive position above the lantern, clamps for securing said lens in inactive position and shoulders projecting laterally on either side of said lens.
4. The combination with a lantern having a globe and a surrounding guard, of a lens frame having lateral diverging wings adapted, to rest against said guard, a lens in said frame. flexibly connected links, one attached to said frame and the other attached to the upper part of the lantern, a link hinged, at one end, to said frame and whose other end is formed to releasably engage the lower part of the lantern said lens and links adapted to fold upon the top of said lantern.
5. The combination with a lantern having a globe and a surrounding guard, of a lens frame having lateral diverging wings adapted to rest against said guard, a lens in said frame, flexibly connected links, one attached to said frame and the other attached to the upper part of the lantern, a link hinged, at one end, to said frame and whose other end is formed to releasably engage the lower part of the lantern and engaging clamps carried by the upper part of the lantern adapted to hold said lens frame when it is folded into position on top of said lantern.
6. The combination with a lantern having a globe, of a movable lens, links flexibly connected together one of which is hinged to the top of the lantern and the other of which is connected to the lens frame and whose free end is adapted to releasably engage the bottom part of the lantern, side shields associated with said lens and means for fastening the lens and frameon top of the lantern outof operative position.
7. A lantern having a globe and av guard surrounding said globe, a lens frame, a lens in said frame, connections for anchoring said lens frame to said guard and lantern top in positions to associate said lens with the lantern globe, shields connected to said lens frame and means whereby said lens and frame may be folded and fastened on top of said lantern.
