The present invention relates to flexible strapping particularly suitable for embod1- ment in articles of personal wear.
The object of the present invention is to provide elastic strapping of an improved form which is particularly suited for embodiment in body belts, garters,.wrist straps for watches, flexible strapping or inserts for boots and shoes, suspenders, and a variety of similar purposes which will be manifest to those skilled in the art.- With this object in view, the features of the invention consist in certain novel features of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed, the advanta es of whlch Wlll be obvious to those skille in the art from the following description.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the preferred form of the Invention, F 1g. 1 represents a plan view of the new form of strapping in a stretched condition; Fig. 2 is a view of the same strapplng in its normal unstretched condition; Fig. 3 1s a cross section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1 1'llustrating the method of securing the front and back faces of the strapping together i with the elastic body ortion; Figs. 4 and 5 represent sections em odying certain sl1ght modifications; and Fig. 6 is a plan view of the strapping shown in section in Fig. 5 in its normal unstretched condition.
In thestrapping shown in the illustrated embodiment of the invention, a body portion 10 of elastic webbing is covered upon opposite sides with front and back layers 12 and 14 respectively. The front and back layers may consist of leather, fabric, or a combination of leather and fabric, depending on the use to which the strapping is to be put. The front and back coatings are applied to the elastic webbing while the latter is main I tained in a stretched condition and firmly secured to one another andto the webbing-by adhesive. When the tension upon the webbing is released, the contraction causes the strapping to assume a form somewhat as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The depth and character of the ruflling depends upon the Width of the margins outside of the elastic webbing. The general process of covering a strip ofelastic webbing .the width of the with leather 1n order to produce an elastic ather belt is clearly shown and described in the patent to Jacobs, No. 1,288,601, dated December 24, 1918. In the present product,
the front and back coverings 12 and 14 are.
secured to the body portion of the elastic webbing by adhesive and in addition are firmly united with one another along the side margins 16. By uniting the front and back coatings directly to one another, a
satisfactory form of strapping is obtained,
even though one of the coatings is formed of a material which does not readily unite with the elastic webbing. The union between the front and back coatings, coupled with the connection between one of the coatings and the elastic webbing, causes both of the coatings to move with the webbing during the expansion and contraction of the latter. Upon contraction of the webbing, the front and back coatings at the side marginal portions are ruffled or wrinkled, the extent and character of these ruflles'depending upon margin. In the embodiment of the strapping shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the width at the side marginal portions is varied, Fig. .5 illustrating a form in which the side marginal portions have a minimum extension and Fig. 4 illustratinga form in which the marginal width of the front coatpearance to the strapping but protects t e elastic webbing against deterioration and insures a long life for the article.
I claim:
An elastic strapping for embodiment in articles of personal-wear comprising a body portion of elastic webbing,front and back coverings of fabric and leather secured to the webbing and having relatively deeper opposite sides of the elastic webbing by adand coarser rufiles throughout a substanhesive and to one another at op osite martial width beyond the elastic webbing due 10 gins of the elastic webbing by hesive, the tocontraction thereof.
