DESK LAMP.
Application filed May 13, 1925. Serial No. 29,877.
This invention relates to improvements in desk or table lamps and has for its principal object to provide a new and improved construction wherein a lamp may be completely concealed beneath the table or desk but may be brought into operative position by vertical movement of the lamp body. Other objects of the invention will appear from time to time as the following description proceeds.
The invention may best be understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a desk to which my invention has been applied.
Figure 2 is an enlarged sectional view of the desk and lamp shown in Figure 1 but with the lamp body lowered so as to be invisible from the top of the desk with the exception of the top of the lamp, which is Hush with the upper surface of the desk.
Figure 3 is a view in cross section taken on line 3, 3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a modified form of my invention in which vertical movement of the lamp is controlled by frictional devices cooperating with the guide means.
Figure 5 is a detailed section showing the adjusting devices associated with the vertical guides.
Figure 6 is a detailed view showing one form of locking mechanism which may be used in connection with my improved device, and
Figure 7 is a detailed view showing the hinged sides of the lamp, and a pen receptacle formed in the top of the lamp body.
Referring now to the details shown in the drawings, the invention is shown as applied to a desk or table 10 of any suitable form. A lamp body 11 consists of a shade 12 having a fla-t top 13, the shade preferably being rectangular in form and open at the bottom so as to shed the rays ofthe lightV from a lamp 14 in a downwardly direction as clearly shown in Figure 2. The front and rear sides 15, 15 of the shade are hinged along their upper edges, as shown in Figure 7, so as to be movable outwardly and thus permit the light to spread over a greater area, as desired, when the lamp is in raised position.
The lamp body is provided with suitable supports herein consisting of two vertically disposed members 16, 16 connecting opposite ends of the lamp body to a horizontally upper surface of a.
disposed base plate 17. The lamp body and base plate 17 with the intervening supports 16, 16 constitute a unitary structure arranged to be moved vertically with respect to the top 2O of table orv desk 10. An aperture 21 is formed in the top 20, this aperture being of such shape and size that the base plate 17 will lit closely in said aperture when said lamp is in raised position as shown in Figures 1 and 4, and when in closed position, as shown in Figure 2, the top 13 of the lamp body will lit snugly in said aperture flush with the upper surface 22 of the table top 20. In order to insure close tting engagement, I provide a metallic frame 25 surrounding the aperture 21, this frame having chambered inner edges 26, 26 inclined downwardly and outwardly so as to be cngaged by the inclined lateral margins 17a of the base plate 17, and thus limit upward movement of the latter when it is raised into its uppermost position, as shown in F igure 1 The upper plate 13 of the lamp body is preferably overhanging and provided with downwardly extending surfaces 27, 27 around its periphery adapted to engage and be guided into the upper margins of the frame 25 when the lamp is lowered into its collapsed position, as shown in Figure 2.
Guiding and supporting means for the lamp body and its associated movable parts are provided beneath the table top 20. In the form shown in Figures 2 and 3, this guiding and supporting means comprises a pair of vertically disposed rods 30, 30 spaced apart and suitably supported on L- shaped members 31, 31 and 32, 32 connected with a casing 33, suspended from the lower surface of the desk top within which the lamp is adapted to be lowered. A pair of brackets 35, 35 are connected to extensions 36, 36 on the bottom of the base plate 17 ,which extensions preferably consist of cylindrical prolongations of the lamp supports 16, 16 having said brackets vertically adjustable thereon by means of lock nuts 60 and 61, threaded on said extensions. The brackets 35, 35 extend laterally from said extensions and are provided with sleeve members 37, 37 slidably engaged on the supporting rods 30, 30.
In the form shown in Figures 2 and 3, means are provided for counterbalancing the lamp body comprising a pair of weights 40, 40 arranged to slide vertically on guide rods 41, 41 and each connected to an ad]asurface of said lamp body substantially Hush with the upper surface of said table top in a second position.

In combination with a table having a top, a movable unit comprising a lamp body having a substantially plain upper surface, supporting means extending below said lamp body, and a horizontally disposed base plate connected to said supporting means and spaced vertically from said lamp body, guiding means below the upper surface of said table and co-operating with said movable unit to permit said lamp body to be raised above the upper surface of said table in one position with said base plate substantially level with said table top and to be lowered with the upper surface of said lamp body substantially flush with the upper surface of said table top in a second position, and a casing below said table top forming a receptacle for said movable unit when the device is in lowered position, said guiding means comprising vertically disposed guide members disposed laterally of the path of movement of said movable unit at opposite ends of said casing and connected thereto.

In combination with a table having a top, a movable unit comprising a lamp body having a substantially plain upper surface, supporting means extending below said lamp body and a horizontally disposed base plate connected tov said supporting means and spaced vertically from said lamp body, guiding means below the upper surface of said table and co-operating with said movable unit to permit said lamp body to be raised above the upper surface of said table in one position with said base plate substantially level with said table top and to be lowered with the upper surface of said table top in a second position, and counterbalancing devices below said table top connected to said movable unit.

In combination with a table having a top, a movable unit comprising a lamp body having a substantially plain upper surface, supporting means extending below said lamp body and a horizontally disposed base plate connected to; said supporting means and spaced vertically from said lamp body, guiding means below the upper surface of said table and co-operatingwith said movable unit to permit said lamp body to be raised above the upper surface of said table in one position with said base plate substantially level with said table top and to be lowered with the upper surface of said lamp body substantially flush with the upper surface of said table top in a second position, counterbalancing devices below said table top connected to said movable unit, and a casing below said table top forming a receptacle for said movable unit, when the latter is in lowered position, and enclosing said guide and counterbalancing means.

In combination with a table having a top, a movable unit comprising` a lamp body having a substantially plain upper surface, supporting means extending' below said lamp body, connected to said supporting` means and spaced vertically from said lamp body, guiding means below the upper surface of said table and co-operating with said movable unit to permit said lamp body to be raised above the upper surface of said table in one position with said base plate substantially level with said table top and to be lowered with the upper surface of said lamp body substantially flush with the upper surface of said table top in a second position, counterbalancing devices below said table top connected to said movable unit and tending` to raise the latter, and latch means adapted to selectively restrain said unit in lowered position.
7. In combination with a table or the like having a top, a movable unit comprising a lamp body having a substantially plain upper surface, supporting means extending below said lamp body, and a horizontally disposed base plate connected to said supporting means and spaced vertically from said lamp body, guiding means below the upper surface of said table and co-operating with said movable unit to permit vertical movement of said unit relative to said table top, a shade for theside of said lamp body and means permitting angular adjustment of said shade when the lamp body is in raised position.
8. In combination with a table having a top, a movable unit comprising a lamp body having a substantially plain upper surface, supporting means extending below said lamp body and a horizontally disposed base plate connected to said supporting' means and spaced vertically from said lamp body, guiding means below the upper surface of said table and co-operating with said movable unit to permit vertical movement of said unit relative to said table top and a shade for the sides of said lamp body, and hinged thereto to permit angular adjustment of said shade when the lamp body is in raised position.
