DETACHABLE LED.
Application filed December 17, 1923.
My invention relates to improvements in containers. One of its objects is to provide a detachable hinged lid for containers to enenle the original containers to be used for vending purposes, and the hinged lids to be transferred from one original container to another as the goods from one container after another are disposed of and removed. Another object is to provide improved means to detachably connect a hinged lid to the original container. Another object is to provide a close and practically moisture and dust proof connection between the hinged lid and the original container. Another object is to provide a hinged lid of transparent material through which the goods in the original package l -ay be displayed and at the same time kept clean and in good salable condition. My invention also comprises certain details of form, and combination and arrangement of components, all of which will be fully set forth in the description of the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a cen ral vertical section through an original container and its original orshipping lid. I
Fig. 2 is atop plan view of the same ith the original lid detached and replaced by a transparent hinged lid detachably attached to said original package.
- Fig, 3 is an enlarged sectional detail taken on line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig i is a side elevation of the original container with its hinged lid in the open position.
the separated members by means of which the hinged lid is hinged and detachably connected to the original package.
T he accompanying drawings illustrate the preferred embodiment of my invention in which represents a type of original sheet metal package quite extensively employed in di'h erent sizes for the packing and shipment of a variety of articles of commerce, as for instance cakes, candies and groceries. The goods are usually adapted to be conveniently vended directly from the original package, and the original or shipping cover of sheet metal 16 being closely fitted to the opening 17 in the top of the original package is not adapted either to displaying the goods with in the original package, or to be readily detached from or applied to the original package. The lid 16 is forced or wedged tightly 5 is an enlarged perspective view of Serial No. 681,038.
into place in the opening, and hence is not: readily detachable.
I therefore have provided ahinge member 20 having hinge eyes 21 and22, which hinge member is also provided with a linger or look 24 adapted to enter the opening 17 of the original pac rage and to hook over the inwardly turned annular edge 25 of the sheet metal at the opening 17, to hold the hinge member 20 in place with reference to the original package. The sheet metal of he hinge member 20 is also folded upon itself at 6 to embrace opposite faces of the annular heet metal seam 27 of the original package 0 serve as an additional locking means to hably lock the hinge member 20 to the ori inal package near the month thereof, The locking members 2d and 26 act mutually to i'rmly and detachably hold the hinge meniber in place with reference to the original package, and at the same time enable sai-zl gringo member 20 to be readily detached irom one original package and applied to another similar original package. An npwardly projecting member 28, preferably formed integrally with the hinge member 20 serves as a stop or rest against the upper end of which the hinged lid is designed to rest and be supported when the lid is in its open position as shown in Fig. I also preferably stamp up a tongue from the member 28-. asfshown in Fig; 5, which tongue is designed to serve as a resilient finger to hold a price tag in place with reference to the member 28, by slipping the price tag be tween the linger 30 and the member 28.
A lid 32 preferably composed of a panel of glass or other transparent nmterial and an annular metal binding member ill having a recess or channel to belitted over the or." of the panel 33, and an inwardly ti'irned annularliange 35, design d to fit into the open mouth 17 of the orginal package and to thereby make a sufliciently close joint with the inwardly turned flange the original package to provide a practically dustpi-oof and moisture excluding or including joint between the hinged lid and the month of the original package, and at the same time said lid being readily lifted from and applied to the mouth of the original package as may be required.
The metal member 34 is provided with one or more hinge eyes preferably formed bv soldering or brazing two short sections of llll til
Eel
brass tubing 37 and 38 to the meeting ends of the metal member 34:, whereby the member 34 may be applied to the rim of the panel 38 and the hinge eyes 37 and 38 brought together and interposed between the hinge eyes 21 and 22 and locked in place upon the panel 33 and also with reference to the hinge member 20 by means of a hinge rod 4-0. The hinged lid and hinge member 20 are'thus adapted to be successively applied to and removed from successive original packages and used therewith While vending the. content-s of the successive original packages, thus serving to display the goods within the original package, to give ready access to the interior oi the original package and to afford a practically moisture and dust proof joint when the lie is in its closed position. A litting member enables the lid to be conveniently lifted and closed.
The apparatus herein shown and described is capable of considerable modification with in the scope of ti e claims without deg arting from the spirit of my invention.
hat I claim is:-
l. A detachable hinge supporting member adapted to be applied to the top of a can having a rim and an inwardly extending ledge, said hinge supporting member comprising a hook-like member adapted to engage over the inner edge oi the can lodge, a plate adapted to rest upon the can ledge, and a recessed member adapted to engage over the can rim, the parts having such re siliency and the recessed member being so related to the hook member that when the hook member is in en agement With the inner edge of the can ledge, the recessed member may be snapped on and oh from the can rim.
2. A detachable cover adapted to be applied to the top of a can having a rim and an inwardly extending ledge, comprising a can lid and a hinge supporting member hinged to said lid, said hinge supporting member comprising a hook-lil e member adapted to engage over the inner edge of the can ledge, a plate adapted to rest upon the can ledge, and a recessed member adapted to engage over the can rim, the parts having such resiliency and the recessed member being so related to the hook member that when the hook member is in engagement with the inner edge of the can ledge, the recessed member may be snapped on and oil from the can rim.
3. A detachable hinge supporting mem ber adapted to be applied to the top of a can having a rim and an inwardly extending ledge, said hinge supporting member comprising a hook-like member adapted to engage over the inner edge of the can ledge, a plate adapted to rest upon the can ledge, a recessed member adapted to engage over the can rim,' and an upwardly extending member adapted to support a can lid in its inclined open position, the hook member plate member and recessed member having such resiliency and the recessed member being so related to the hook member that when the hook member is in engagement with the inner edge of the can ledge, the recessed member may be snapped on and off from the can lid.
at. A cover adapted to be detachably ap plied to the top of a can having a rim and an inwardly extending ledge, comprising a can lid and a hinge supporting member hinged thereto, said hinge supporting member comprising a hook-like member adapted to engage over the inner edge of the can lodge, a plate adapted to rest upon the can ledge, a recessed member adapted to engage over the can rim, and a lid supporting member projectingupwardly and adapted to support the lid in an inclined open position, the hook member plate member and recessed membe having such resiliency and the re cessed member being so related to the hook member that when the hook member is in engagement with the inner edge of the can ledge, the recessed member may be snapped on and oil from the can rim.
5. A cover adapted to be detachably applied to the top of a can having a rim and an inwardly extending ledge said cover comprising a can lid having an inwardly turned annular flange to fit into the can opening and a hinge supporting member hinged to said can lid, said hinge supporting member comprising a hook-like member adapted to engage over the inner edge 01 the can ledge, a plate adapted to rest upon the can ledge, and a recessed member adapted to engage over the can rim, the parts having such resiliency and the recessed member be .ing so related to the hook member that when the hook member is in engagement with the inner edge of the can ledge the recessed member may be snapped on and elf from the can rim.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto atfixed my signature.
HENRY E. BRUNHOFF.
