CHECK OR SMILAR INSTRUMENT.
Application led July 26,
This invention relates to bank checks or similar iur-itruments which are usually supplied in bool-:sl or sets and which, when used, are identitied respectively by distinguishing serial numbers. In the use ot' suoli instruments, it is necessary that each be serially numbered by the user at the time it is issued or else, is customary in preparing such instruments tor the use ot business' establishments and individual clients using them in considerable numbers, that each book or set be consecutively nun'ibered in advance b v the bank or other institution supplying them, the numbers of successive sets being dill'erent, so that the serial numbers of the instruments of all ot the setswill run consecutively.
'lhe present invention has tor its object to avoid this necessity of the separate numbering of each instrument and provide a construction wherein the instruments may bel issued in sets all of which are initially exactly alike, the several instruments of ouch set heilig consecutively numbered, and the several sets being capable'of receiving distinguishing designations whereby in the iliretferred `iorin a tot-alie provided for leach instrument, the total serial numbers being di'liereiit in the several sets.
y The foregoing and other objects of the invention. together with means whereby the sanne may' be carried into etiect, will best be understobd from the following description of one torni or embodiment thereof illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. l is a face view of a clieck arrangec in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan View of a part ot a check book, the corners ot' the two uppermost checks being turned to illustrate the consecutive numbering.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of a check or a coinplete book of checks illustrating the designation of the series of several successive books.
Fig. 4l is a View on a reduced scale illustrating portions ot two books differently designated.
The invention is herein shown as embodied in a set ot blank checks one ot' which is illustrated in Fig. l, each ot said checks bearing on its tace the usual printed form with blank spaces :tor the date, the name of the payee, the amount and the signature of the maker. The 4precise torni used may be any of those 1923. serial No. 653,932.
usually employed for this purpose. In accordance with the present invention, the checks are supplied in books of a suitable ninnber in each, herein shown as'one'hu'ndred, a lportion of such a book being illusVA ti'ated in Fig. '2, and the irst cheek of a com plete book being 'shown in Fig. B, the lbinding and stub portions of the books, it's'uch f consecutively and Vwhich are the same onv all "checks of all books, corresponding iiumerals'on the several checksofeach book being superimposed or inregistering relation with one another. As herein shown the numerals B run from l to 20.-
ln the 'usent the particular embodiment of the invention shown and above described, the checks ot the iirst book will be issued in their original fornnthe complete serial number of each of the checks being the numeral A. ln order to'iden'tify the checks of a given book Iby a complete serial number, Lthe numerals B are employed, one of said numerals being suitably identified oi desig nate'd on `all of the' checks oit the book to constitute an additional part ot the complete serial numbers of all ot the checks in the book. This may conveniently vbe done by punching or otherwise cutting through the book at a point corresponding to one of said numerals. As shown in Fig. 3, this, in the present instance, is accomplished by notching or punchingthe book or otherwise designating the desired identiiyingnumeral B, as shown at C. The complete serial number of each check is thus ...composed in part ot the notched or otherwise identified numeral B, and in part of the number A. For example, the check shown in Fig. 3 bears a number A. of the value 00 and has a distinguishing notch C corresponding to the number 4; in the series B. The total serial number of this check may therefore be taken as 400. The total serial number of the next check will be 401, thatkof the next 402, and so on through the set.
lt will be understood that after the first book above described, and comprising the checks serially numbered from l to 99, has been used up in its original form and without notching, the second book will be notched at C opposite the numeral l in the series B, and that the complete serial number et each check in the said second bool( will be 100 plus the number borne at i by the particular check in question. lit will further be unuerstood that in the use ot succes site books, the numerals 2, 3, 4, etc. ot the series B will be notched at C, thereby providing` checks bearing;` total serial numbers of values in the 2007s, SOOS, 4-.00s, etc. .ln Fig'. ll are shown two books or sets notched at l and 2, respectively. The set shown is capable of supplying" serial numbers up to and including 2099, and it will be obvious trat numerals B ot greater value ma)7 be employed it desired.
The embodiment of the invention above described and illustrated in the drawings is designed to provide tor a consecutive numbering olf' the checks througl successive books. It will be obvious, however, that a greater or less number ot cheeks than 100 may be included in each book, that the identi'tying` characters B may assume forms other than the numerals shown, such, for example, letters, that the desired character B maiY be identified by a distingmishinp; designation other than the notch C shou'n, and that more than one ot' said characters may be so designated it desired. rllhese and other modifications and advantages ot the invention will, however, be understood to those sllled in the art Without further discussion in detail.
Having thus described my invention, l claim:
l. A. check or similar instrumentbearing a serial number composed oit two parts one of which comprises a numeral and the other ot which comprises one ot a series of characters all. apilgiearine on said instrrment` the character of. said series which forms said other part of said serial number being identified by a distinguishing designation.
2. e.. cheek book or the like, including a plurality ol" chechs bearing consecutive serial numbers, each ot' said checks also bearing a series ot identifying` characters which the same onall the checks, and all ot said checks ha Ying' the same identit fino charac- .p -l e ter ideutined by a distingun i no' designation.
ln combination, a plurality of check books, ach checl; bool( comprising a pluralit),Y ot checks, the checks in each book having serial numbers, each ot the checks having a series ot identifying characters, all the checks in one bool( havingV the same identityingl character designated by distinguishing means, but different books havingl different characters so designated.
4r. A seriallyv numbered check or the like bearingA a numeral and having adjacent one edge a series oit' other nuu'ierals, said edge being cut at a point corresponding' to one oi said last named mnnerals to identita7 or designate the same, and the serial number ot said check comprising the numeral of said series so identified or designated together with said i'irst named numeral.
A check boohr or the like co` iprising a prinalitj,Y ol checks bearing respectivelyv conseeutiife serial numbers to designate parts ot the intended complete serial numbers ot the several checks, said checks all bearing adj acent one edge of the set the same series of identifying' numerals,'lile numerals on the several checks being in registration when superimposed, ant said bool; being cut at a point adjacent one of the numerals or said series to designate the same numeral on all the checlqs and to complete the serial numbers or" all oit the checks ot said booltP bj.' an equal increment.
In testimony whereof' l atliX my signature.
