Description
N. HUNT.
Saw-Mill Dogs. NO.157,202. Patented Nov. 24,1874.
WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
NATHAN HUNT, OF SALEM, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAW-MILL DOGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,202, dated November 24, 1874; application filed October 10, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHAN HUNT, of Salem, in the county of Oolumbiana and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Saw-Mill Dog, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a side view of my improved sawmill dog shown in position for use. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the sliding block, partly in section, to show the construction.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved dog for holding the last remnant of a log upon a saw-mill while being sawed into boards.
The invention consists in the combination of the rod or equivalent slide or way, the sliding block, the set-screw, the sleeve provided with a claw and a screw-socket, and the screw rod or handle, with each other, to adapt them for attachment to the knee of a saw-mill headblock, as hereinafter more fully described.
A represents a rod, which is secured to the side of the knee of a saw-mill head-block, and upon which is placed a block, B, which slides up and down upon it, and is secured in place when adjusted by a set-screw, (3, that passes through a journal formed upon the outer side of the said block B, and presses against the side of the said rod A, or against a washer, c, placed in the cavity of the block B, to prevent the rod A from being bruised by the said setscrew. Upon the journal of the block B is placed a sleeve, D, which has a claw, 01 formed upon one side to take hold of the slab or plank to be held. Upon the other side of the sleeve D is formed a screw-socket, d into which screws the end of a rod, E, which is made of such a length as to serve as a handle for operating the device, and to the end of which is attached a knob or hand-wheel, e, for convenience in operating it. The screw out upon the end of the rod E is made of such a length that its end may be screwed against the side of the journal of the block B, to serve as a set-screw for locking the sleeve D in place when the claw d has been adjusted in position upon the timber. The cavity of the sleeve D may be provided with a washer to prevent the journal of the block B from being bruised by the end of the screw-rod E. Instead of a rod, A, a dovetailed groove or a T-slot may be used as a slide or way for the block B to slide upon.
In using the device the block B is slid up upon the rod or way A to the proper position, and is secured by the set-screw O. The rodE is then raised, turning the sleeve D and forcing the claw d into the timber to be held, where it is locked in place by screwing the said rod E into the socket d of the said sleeve D.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I The combination of the rod A, the sliding block B, the set-screw O, the sleeve D, pro vided with a claw, al and a screw-socket, 01 and the screw-rod E, with each other, to adapt them for attachment to the knee of a saw-mill head-block, as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
X NATHAN HUNT. Witnesses:
THOMAS KENNETT, PETER AMBLER.
