GEORGE F. COLBERT AND WILLIAM H. COLBERT, OF YPITTSBURGH, rPENNSYLVANIA.
COMBINED MRROR AND TOWEL HOLDER.
Application filed Deccmbcr 16, 1922. Serial No. 607,397.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that we, GEORGE F. CoLBnnT and WILLIAM H. Cor-BERT, citizens ot the United States, 4and residents ot'Pittsburgli, in the county ot Allegheny .and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined Mirrors and Towel Holders; and we do hereby declare the tollowingto .be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
Uur invention relates to mirrors and towel holders for use in lavatories, bathlrooms, kitchens, and the like, and its object is to provide a simple and inexpensive construction, whereby a mirror and 'a holder `:tor towels maybe combined `in a single article.
Another object ot our invention is to provide a combined mirror and towel holder which may be conveniently installed in any room without the use or" the numerous screws or nails which are necessary in installing mirrors and Atowel receptacles as ordinarily constructed.
Our improved device includes a frame stamped from sheet metal and of inverted U=shape. A mirror is supported in the upper or' closed portion of the frame by means of suitable transverse members, and the projecting lower ends of the frame are utilized as a support for a towel holder consisting of sheet metal end members and a bottom member or bar ot glass or other suitable material.
Other' novel features ot our invention consist in certain details of construction and assembly, these novel details contributing to the inexpensive and simple nature of the device, as will more fully be described below;
In the accompanying drawing, Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a combined mirror and towel holder constructed in accordance with our invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same device, the section being taken substantially along the line 2 2, Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view. the section being taken substantially on the line 3 3, Fig. 2; Fig. i is a partial perspective view of one ot the ends of the towel receptacle; Fig. 5 is a Jfragmentary horizontal sectional view, showing one nia-nner ot attaching the towel holder ends to the side rails ot the frame, the section being taken substantially on the line 5 5, Fig, 2; Fig. Q another :fragmentary horizontal section similar to Fig. 5 showing a modii'ied method ot attaching the towel holder' ends ofthe supporting frame; Fig. 7 is a side elevational view otl the construction shown in Fig. 6,'and Fig. 8 is a partial side view showing one construction which may be vused when the towel holder is a bar instead of a receptacle. Y l
- The drawing shows a three-sided rectangular frame having side rails 2 connected. by a top rail 3, the top and sides ot the trame being suitably constructed of a single angle bar having each flange cut away at the points of bending as shown at fl, Fig. 1. A transverse angle bar connects the sides 2 of theframe some distance above their lower ends, and is secured to the sides 2 by means of ears 6 formed at the ends ot the bar and attached to the side anges ot' the rails 2 by means ot screws or rivets 7. The lower ends of the side rails 2 may be connected by means of another angle bar 8 which, like the bar 5, is provided with ears 9 that are attached to the side rails 2 by means of screws or rivets 10, as best shown on Fig. 2. This bar 8 may have one or more openings for admitting screws or nails to assist in fastening the device to a wall or the like.
A rectangular mirror 12 is inserted in the frame formed by the side rails 2, the top` rail 3 and the cross bar 5. As shown, the mirror 12 is fastened in this frame by means of a transverse strip 13 having ears 141 formed at its ends and attached to the side rails 2, suitably by means ot'screws 15.
The mirror 12 may have a suitable backing 16 of paper, cloth-or other material.
The portions of the side rails 2 projecting below the mirror 12 are employed to support a towel holder consisting of sheet metal side pieces 20 and a bottom 21 which may consist of glass or other desired material. Each of the side pieces 20 is composed of a single piece ot sheet metal and has a front flange 22, a rear' flange 23, and a socket portion formed at its lower edge tor receiving one end of the bottom plate 21.
IThe rear iange 23 ot each of the side pieces 20 is provided with integral ears 25 having openings 26. Screws 27 and nuts 28 may be emplo ed, as best shown in Fig. 5, 'for attaching t e ears 25 to the side rails 201: the main trame.
Another method of securing the ears 25 ,t0 the Side rails 2;.1S Sheva in Fissand t The ears in this case are formed with projections extending inwardly and downwardly and passing through slits formed in the side rails 2, as best shown on Fig. 6. This construction has the advantage that the towel holder may be more readily detached from the side rails 2 than in the construction where the screws 27 are employed.
Each of the socket members which, as stated above, are formed integral with the end piece 20 of the towel holder, consists ot upper and lower horizontal portions 3l and 32 connected by a vertical portion and forming a box-like construction which lits over the end ot the bottom plate 2l. The :front of each of these socket members may be closed by means of an ear 34C formed integral with the upper portion 3l. and bent down across the-edge of the bottom plate 2].
Perforated ears 35 may be secured to the top rail 3 for suspending the device from hooks, nails or picture cords, as may be desired or the device may be set upon a shelf or a bracket, the towel cabinet serving as a base and support for the mirror.
Fig. l of the drawing shows the general appearance of the device when in use, the towel receptacle being partly filled with folded paper towels, as shown at 36. A towel holder consisting or' a bar of glass or the like, may be substituted for the receptacle, in which case the side members 2O may be modified in the manner shown at 20a tion, the scope of which is contained in the appended claims.
We claim as our invention:
l. A structure comprising a mirror, a frame of inverted U-shape surrounding and supporting said mirror and having its leg portions extending beyond said mirror, and
a bar connecting said legs above their lower ends and serving as a support tor the mirror.
2. A structure comprising a mirror, a frame of inverted U-shape surrounding and supporting said mirror and having its leg portions extending beyond said mirror, a bar connecting said legs above their lower ends and serving as a support for the mirror, and means adjacent to the lower ends of said leg portions for supporting a 'towel holder.
In testimony whereof we the said GEORGE F, COLBERT and VVILLrAM H. Connn'r have hereunto set our hands.
GEORGE r. coLBERr. WILLIAM n, coLBERT.
