Description

Feb. 24. 1925. 1,527,386 C. W. BARNARD DISPMQI PACKAGE AND SUPPORT TEBREPOB Filed NOV. 26 1923 Patented Feb. 24, 1925.
UNITED STATES CHARLES W. BARNAR-D, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
DISPLAY PACKAGE AND SUPPGIE'LT THEREFOR.
Application filed November To all who-m it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. BARNARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Display Package and Support Ther for, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a package for an article or articles of merchandise, such for example as medicinal tablets, candies in tablet forms, chewing gum, etc. Goods of this character require for their successful distribution and sale that they be brought before the buying public, and it is found desirable for the retailer to display the goods in a conspicuous place so that the attention of the prospective purchaser shall be attracted thereto. 7
The primary object of my invention is to produce a package for goods of the character indicated which will lend itself readily to such display purposes.
A. further object is to render it possible to carry a package of the goods on the person without an annoying rattle of the goods in the package when a portion of the contents thereof has been removed.
Another object is to provide a novel display device constituting a support upon which a plurality of packages may be mounted for display purposes.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view of a plurality of packages constructed in accordance with my invention, the packages being shown supported upon a suitable display device.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the lower or base portion of a two-piece container showing a series or row of tablets connected together in edge to edge relation so as to fit within a continuous channel provided by the container.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the upper or cover portion of the container shown in Fig. 2.
My improved package is constructed to provide a channel of a depth substantially equal to the thickness of the tablet to be contained therein, the inner wall of the channel defining an aperture adapted to receive a supporting member of a display device; and the tablets are preferably connected together in edge to edge relation with weakened portions between them so that when a portion of the contents of the package has been removed, the remaining tab- 26, 1923. Serial No. 676,891.
lets shall be retained by the channel against movement, thus avoiding an objectionable rattling of the contents of the package when carried upon the person.
Usually packages for medicinal tablets and similar goods are made from tin or other sheet metal, and my improved package is herein shown as thus constructed of metal, being in the form of a two-piece box or container. It will be apparent, however, that the invention is not limited to the use of sheet metal nor to the particular construction of the container herein shown.
The package when constructed in accordance with the present disclosure comprises a lower or base portion of a two piece container and a cover portion 11. Said base and cover portions are provided at their inner edges with upturned and downturned flanges 12 and 13 respectively, and spaced inwardly a short distance from said outer flanges they are )rovided with corresponding flanges 14 and 15 which define a central aperture 16. Said flanges on the base and cover sections are adapted to interlit or telescope as will be readily apparent.
There is thus formed between the inner and outer flanges a continuous channel adapted to receive a series of tablets 17 arranged in edge to edge relation. Preferably the flanges are made of a width such that this channel is very shallow, being of a depth corresponding substantially to the thickness of the tablets.
The channel thus provided is adapted to hold the tablets against free movement in the package when a portion of the contents thereof has been removed. But preferably I utilize the channel to accomplish this result more effectually by connecting the tablets together in edge to edge relation. Thus referring to Fig. 2, I have shown the tablets 17 connected by intermediate portions or links 18 of a thickness less than the thickness of the tablets so as to form a weakened dividing line or groove between the tablets facilitating their separation into individual units.
The package may obviously be made of any desired shape while maintaining its flat form. Herein I have shown it in the form of a diamond and the central aperture therein is preferably similarly shaped.
As an illustration of the manner in which my improved package may be conveniently displayed upon the counter of the retailer,
' I have shown in Fig. 1 a display device eomprising, a suitable base 19 from. which rises centrally thereof asupporting member in the form of standardQO preferably shaped to correspond With the shape-of the central aperture in'the package so that when aphirality of packages are placed over the standard as'shown, they are maintained in a uniform position thereon.
Other; forms of display "devices. adapted to utilize the central aperture in the package to receive a supporting member will doubtless occur to those skilledin-the art.
I claim ,as my invention 1, A; packageeadap-ted tor display ;pur;v poses constructed to provide a relativelyv shallow channel, and a cover for thech'annel,
the inner Wall of said ehannel serving to define a holerthrough the package.
2. The combination of a display package constructed. to i provide a channel andl ;a
cover for the, channe1,;the innerwall pf said.
channel serving to define an apertnrein the package and talolets connected together -in;;
whereby; the latter may vserve to hold the I edge to edge relation and adapted to;.fit;-into the channel whereby the latter may ;serve tohole .the tablets against movement-in the,
package after aportion etite-contents has been removed.
3. A container; for -ta-blets -and ;the like comprising, in combination, a, hase-.. 1nember having an aperturetherein, inner and outer ;aperture saidfiangesbeing adapted to tele scope With the flanges on said base member to confine the *iilblQtSWliilllIlithB .compart- :mentdefined -by: the, spaced flanges, and said inner fianges serving to define an. opening th-reu;gl1 the container.
4., The combinationvvith a base having a --standard rising thereirom and a display paekage construeted'to provide a channel anda cover tlieretor,the-inner all of said 7 channel seuv ng to.define a hole. through the 50 packageiadaptedf to, receivetsaid standard.
5., A;-.display paekage forntablets comprising abody constructed to, provide a channel,
