HARRY L. CALHOUN, OF BINGHAMTON, NEW YORK.
FILTER.
Application filed September To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, HARRY L. CALHOUN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Binghamton, in the county of Broome and State of New York, have invented new and useful improvements in Filters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a respirator, the general object of the invention being to provide means for preventing dust and dirt from entering the nostrils and mouth of a person.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail. reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views. and in which Figure l is a view showing the device in use.
Figure 2 is a front view of the device.
Figure 3 is a rear view.
Figure 4 is a longitudinal sectional view through one of the tubular members.
Figure 5 is a transverse sectional view.
Figure 6 is a sectional view through the connecting piece between the tubular members.
Figure 7 is a sectional view showing a modification.
In these views, 1 and 2 indicate a pair of tubular members which are suitably connected together by solder or the like and each member has a tapered and curved upper end 3 which is arranged to fit in the nostril of a person using the device. The lower end of each member is open and a hollow mouth piece f has its forked end 5 communicating with the members intermediate their ends through the medium of openings formed therein. This member can be soldered or otherwise fastened to the members, as shown in Figure 7, but I prefer to detachably connect the mouth piece with the members by means of the bolt 6 which passes through a perfQrated part 7 in the mouth piece and en- 1, 1923. Serial No. 660,652.
gages a nut 8 secured to the front of the member. Thus by unfastening the bolt the mouth piece can be removed from the members and then the device can be used with the nostrils only. The device is held'in place by the flexible member 9 which is adapted to en circle the head and each member carries a filtering medium 10. This medium may be made in the form of a sponge, as shown in the first form of the mvention or in the form of a brush as shown at 10 111 Figure 7. The
device is provided with a rounded projection 11 which'acts as a chin rest when the device is in use.
From the above it will be seen that when the device is put in place with the mouth piece held in the mouth and the parts 3 entering the nostrils, the air being breathed in by the person will be filtered so that dust. dirt, germs and the like will be prevented from entering the respiratory system.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. A device of the class described comprising a pair of tubular members, each having a curved and tapered upper end for engaging the nostril, a mouth piece having a forked end communicating with the members intermediate their ends, filtering means in each member, a flexible member for holding the device in place and a chin rest carried by the device.
2. A device of the class described comprising a pair of tubular members, each having a curved and tapered upper end for engaging the nostril, a hollow mouth piece having a forked end formedv ith openings to communicate with the members intermediate their ends, filtering means in each member, a flexible member for holding the device in place, a chin rest carried by the device and means for detachably connecting the mouth piece to the device.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
L. CALHOUN.
