WILLO'UGHBY BERESFOR'D FOX, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
GARMENT SUPPORTER.
Application filed November 13, 1922.
I/'o all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that l, WILLOUGHBY Bunn,- rono For, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Garment Supporters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to garment supporters intended to eliminate the use of buttons. rlhe object of the invention is to provide a device of this class to fasten such garments as overalls, trousers and the like and each supporter is so constructed 'that it may be used alone or in combination with suspenders or garters and the like.
lt will he evident that in eliminating buttons from garments, no button holes will be needed, which is another advantage of this device. The annoying experience of losing a button, when it cannot immediately be replaced, is also avoided and the adjustment of a garment, in connection with which this appliance is used, is also made easier.
In the accompanying drawing one embodiment of the invention is illustrated, and
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the supporters in connection with Suspenders;
Figure 2 is a section along line 2-2 of AFigure 1, and
Figure 3 is a section along line 3-3 of Figure 2.
The preferred construction of the device as illustrated in the accompanying drawing, is in the form of a pair of pliers having two Shanks 10 of identical shape and construction, joined together atone end by means of a spring loop 11, the other ends terminating with flattened grip-pers 12. The grippers are preferably oval in shape, as seen in Figures 1 and 3. rEhe opposing faces of the grippers are provided with a raised, narrow rim 13 along the edge of each gripper. 1n this manner a shallow recess 14- is formed on the inner side of each gripper, as best seen at Figures 2 and 3. The purpose of this rim is to obtain a good hold on the garment, see Figures 1 and 2 of the drawing, as the rim 13 will naturally be imbedded in the material of the garment and in this manner prevent slipping of the latter. Referring particularly to Figure 2, it will be seen that the shanks 10 practically contact near the loop 11, while they stand Serial No. 600,492.
apart at the lower end, `just above the grippers 12, when the latter are pressed together. ln this manner a tapered outer surface from the grippers to the loop is produced. l/Vhen free, the shanks are spread out, as indicated by the dotted lines in Figure 2. This outer surface of the shanks 10 is threadechas at 15, with a coarse thread engaging a small nut 16, which is lmurled on the outside, as best seen in Figure 1, at 17. This construction provides a loose fit between the nut and the shanks, when the former is at the loop end, see dotted lines in Figure 3, while a gradual squeezing together of the shanks will take place, when the nut is screwed down towards the grippers. ln this manner the rim 13 of the grippers 12 will be made to take firm hold of the edge of a garment, as seen in Figures 1 and 2 and the tightening of the nut by screwing it down will compel the grippers to hold fast to the garment. 1t is evident that other holding means than the raised rim 13 may be resorted to, as for instance, a roughened inner surface on each gripper or a rubber or felt pad 2O may be inserted in the recess 14 within the rim 13.
ln Figure lis illustrated the application of the supporters in combination with trouser'suspenders, the loops 11 being attached to the strap 13, fastened to the end of the Suspenders 19.
Another use of the device is as a holder for tools or as a hand hold for the work piece itself when filing, particularly in connection with such work as watch repairing and the like.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A device of the class described comprising a pair of stiff Shanks each gradually increasing in thickness from one end to the other forming together a tapering screw, a flexible loop connecting the thin ends of said shanks, the shanks contacting at the thin ends, diverging towards the thick ends, said Shanks and loopV being of uniform width, grippers at the: thick ends of the shanks, holding elements on the opposing faces of the grippers, and a nut having a tapered bore threaded to engage said tapering screw.
1n testimony whereof I afiX my signature.
