Patented July 8, 1924.

or RICHMOND, VIRGINIA.
wiivnow CLEANER.
Application filed August '31, 1921. Serial No. 497,271. e
To all whom it may concern: g I
Be it known that NIoHoLAs D. SOARLING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond, inth'e county of Henrico and State of Virginia, has invented certain new and. useful Improvements "in" Window Cleaners, of whichthe following is speci ficationf l k This inventlon relates to new and useful improvements in -window washing 'a ratus,' *and more particularly to'a device" of this cha acterk wn. esfihei ese yp wherein water is fed to the window directly from the apparatus, and the primary object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is of a combination type, providing the washing and the squeegee or drying portions in one.
Still another object of the invention resides, in providing a device comprising a reservoir and a washing member in connection therewith which admits of the cleaning fluid to be readily fed to, the window or surface over which the washing member is ap plied, and a still further object resides in providing a squeegee or water removing member which may be applied over said washing member, thus forming a combination device.
A still further object resides in providing a device which is simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be very efiicient and useful in operation.
With these and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claim.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device constructed in accordance with my invention, the squeegee member being shown removed from the washing membera' Figure 2 is a top plan view of the device with parts broken away and parts in section; and
Figure 3 is a reduced transverse section through the device as seen on the line 38 of Figure 1, with the handle member broken away. i
In describing the invention I shall refer to the drawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts PATE throughout the several views, and in which .1 designates a'substantially cylindrical reser- V011 having a neck or socket portion 2 formed thereon receptive of an elongated a handle 3. Water or other cleaning fluid maybe supplied to the reservoir through an voir 1 is" a channel-shapedchamber or the like 5. This chamber is adaptedto receive" the washing member described herebelow'.
The washing member comprisesxprefer ably a rectangular block 6 which is covered with an 'absorbent "material such as feltfor the like designated in the drawing as 7. The felt covers the side, and end outer walls inlet 4:, and formed on one side of the reser- I 'of the block, and is increased in thickness on the outer walls which constitutes the washing face of the device, and at predetermined points in the block 6 are provided a plurality of channels 8. These channels register at their inner ends with openings 9 formed in the reservoir'l at the base of the chamber 5 sothat the cleaning fluid within the reservoir may feed through the channels 8 to the absorbent material 7. Thus it will be seen that after the reservoir is properly filled and the washing member applied in position within the chamber 5, the fluid will flow freely to the washing member and by movement of the complete device over a window or other surface, the latter will be properly supplied with the cleaning fluid and washed.
As stated, my invention contemplates the provision of a combination washing and squeegee apparatus, and to this end I provide a squeegee or water removing device which comprises a channel-shaped member 10 formed preferably of metal and adapted to be readily applied over and to fit snugly against the walls of the chamber 5. The outer wall of the channel-shaped member 10 .is provided with a pair of spaced apart and parallel flanges 11 between which is adapted to be inserted a rubber strip 12. her strip is secured between the flanges by means of screws 13 engaged at their ends with wing nuts l4. V
It will thus be seen from this construction that after the window or other surface has been washed by a movement of the washingdevice thereover, the squeegee is applied to This rubthe washing apparatus and the device then erator, lihe squeegee Washing device and When it is desired to use the squeegee, then to apply it in the same manner in which thedevice Was used as a WflSlliIlg' member. In this manner a combination device is formed, Which Will eliminate" the necessity of carryingtwo separate and distinct members about personally by the operator, and Will at the same time afford permitting-fife new one tobe supplied aften theerold one has become unduly Worn.
