Description

c. F. NoLL ADVERTISING DEvlcE Filed Deo. 12. 1921 after more particularly described, fully Patented Feb. 26, i924..
CHARLES F. HOLL, OIE' SISTERSVLLE, WEST VIRGINIA.
' anvnnrrsrue :environ Application led December 12, 1921. Serial No. 521,918. i
To all who/m, it may concern:
Be it known'that I, CHARLES F. Norm, a' citizen of the United States, residing at Sistersville, lin the county of Tyler and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Advertising Devices, vof which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to advertising devices and has for its object to provide a device of this character which may not only be used for advertising purposes, but as a time table.
lt is another object of the invention to provide a device of this character including a frame or cabinet which is relatively shallow or of a thickness to receive Hat articles, such as cards, pictures, time dials,
etc., so that the device when in use will occupy a small space.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a device of this character wherein the inner wall of the frame or cabinet is provided withv a fabric lining which serves as supporting means for advertising matter disposed within the cabinet or frame, said advertisingr matter being provided with means adapted to penetrate the fabric to suspend the articles within the frame.
lt is a further object of the invention to provide an advertising device of this vcharacter in the form of a shallow cabinet lor frame wherein any part of the device may be used and arranged in various positions, as no individual frames for the advertising matter or devices is necessary.
It is a further object of the invention to provide an advertising device of this character, including a frame 'having a transparent door adapted to be inserted within the frame, said door being provided with means for detachably connecting the same to the frame.
4,Vlith theseand other objects in view, the invention consists in the improved construction and arrangement of parts to behereinclaimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a ,front elevationV of anadvertising device ,constructed in accordance with an embodiment of they invention;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the structure shown in Figure l;
Figure 3 is a rear view of one of the advertising articles showing the applicationv of thefpivoted prongs;
VFigure 4i is a rear elevation of one of the time dials, showing` the application of the pivoted prongs;
Figure '5 is a detailed view of one of the pivoted prongs;
Figure 6 is a detailed View of the connecting means of the door to the frame; and
Figure 7 is a detailed view of the means for fastening the U-shaped prongs to the dials. "Referring tothe drawings, 5 designates a frame or `cabinet comprising a top member 6, a bottoni member `7, and 'side members S and 9, substantially rectangular in cross section. The ends of each member are beveled and adapted to be connected to each other to substantially provide a frame.
A backv 11 is secured to the face 12 of each member, the back cooperating with the frame to provide a cabinet which is rather shallow so that it will only occupy a small space when hung on thewall. Xtending over the outer face lof the back l1 is a sheet of fabric 13, such as velveteen, of any ldesired color, said fabric serving as a background for the device. said fabric are secured to the marginal edges of the back 11, the fabric sheet being, of course, ,stretched across said face so as to lie perfectlyssmooth, but at the same time is not secured in any manner to the area of the face ofthe back within the edges of the back. The purpose of this is to permit the sheet to serve as supporting means for advertising matter to be placed within the cabinet or frame.
In connection with the cabinet, a door is" used, said door comprising a frame 15, said frame being adapted to it Within the frame so that the outer face of the frame 15 is flushed with the outer surface of the AThe edges 1li of parts 6, 7,8 and 9. This feature assists in rendering the device compact. The inner face of the frame adjacent the opening in the frame is provided with a channel or groove adaptedv to receive the edges of a pane of 'glass 16, said pane being secured to theframe in any suit-able manner. EX- tending around the inner face'of the door 15 is a Istrip of padding 17, such as felt, said paddingserving; to prevent the entrance of dust when the door is closed. In order to connect the transparent door to the frame or cabinet, a plurality of hinges 18 are provided, each hinge comprising a plate 19 having knuckles 20 projecting from each end thereof in spaced relation to each other, the plate 19 having openings 21 for the reception of screws. The remaining section lof the hinge comprises a relatively small plate 22 having a knuckle 23 exten ing longitudinally of one edge of the plate, said knuckle being disposed between Vthe knuckles 20. A pintle 24; is Vused to pivotally connect the sections of the hinge to each other. One of the plates of each hinge is secured to the inner face of themembers 8 and 9, while the remaining hinge is secured to the adjacent outer face of the door 15. Two pair of hinges are disposed adjacent the top of the frame and two pair of hinges are disposed adjacent the bottom,
. jects from the opposite end.
Vthe pin to the advertising card or picture,
-so as to balance the design of the frame and at the same time permit the door to be readily opened by the removal of the pintles. Itis only necessary, however, to open the door in order to change or rearrange the advertising matter.
V'In Vconnection with .the vframe and the vfabric sheet 13 novel advertising means' are used in the form of cards or pictures 25 and time dialsl 26. Itis of course obvious that any advertising device that is flat or relatively thin may be disposed within the frame.' Each of the cards or pictures are held within the frame by means comprising a' pair of prongs or pins 27, said pinsv being relatively long and having their upper ends 27 extended laterally and formed into an elongated loop 28, said loop also extending laterally of the pins. A hinge composed of fabric 29 is provided, said fabric including aslot 30 which extends inwardly of one end and an extension or tab 31 which prothe'pin is inserted through the fabric at the junction of the extension with said fabric 29, the extension 31 being passed through the loop 28 and the fabric then passedY over the top of the loop. The portions of the Yfabric sheet on cach side of the slot 30 are thensecured to the rear'face of the card by adhesive means, the shank of the pin extending through the slot 3l). By this means,
it is' possible for the pin to be secured to the advertising 'matter without requiring the card to be punctured, which would interfere with the advertising matter on the front face thereof.
The dials 26 are intended to indicate train time, the hands 32 of the dials being secured to the central portion by means of eyelets 33. A U-shaped or double prong 34 is pro-4 vided' for connecting the dials to the casing,
y thebight portion of said U-shaped prong 1 being secured tothe rear face of the dial by a i sheet of fabric 35,' said fabric being formed In attaching Y substantially T-shaped, the prongs' of the fastener being adapted to extend through the wide portion of the fabric, as shown in YFigure 7. Said wide portion of the fabric is then folded over the bight portionV of the prongs and the narrow portion of the fabric extended over the Wide portion, said fabric being then secured to the back of the dialV casing is shallow and the advertising mat-l ter relatively thin.- Furthermore, by the use of the time dials, the advertising device is made more attractive, as persons endeavoring to ascertain the train timencannot help but read the advertising matter on the cards disposed adjacent the time dials. It is` of course obvious that .I do not desire to limit myself to the use of cards YVor time dials, as it is possible to suspend articles Within the casing, such as collars, with the use of the novel form of supporting prongs', neither'do I wish to be limited to theV precise arrangement of the time dials asthey may be arranged to suit the purpose ofthe user. At the same time,` by the use' ofthe Y casing when thedoor is removed. The glass Y pane of the door also assists in holding the cards and dials in position withinV the f cabinet. This device will beV found useful not only in depots but in hotelsptheaters, and like public places, 'and all of these ifeatures are possessed by a device that is compact and simple in construction.
What is claimed is Y l.v A display device of the character described comprising a supportingV member [having the facewthereof covered with a sheet of fabric,the fabric 'being unsecured to the support' except at its margins, and devices to be displayed havingprongs operatively connected thereto and` adapted tobe vdetachably inserted into said fabric.
2. The combination Withan'article to be'V displayed, of means forjsupporting the article comprising a strip offabric having a perforation at one end, a pin inserted. through said perforationand having aportionon theback of the fabric strip larger f 'than the perforation, the fabric striplbeingA folded over thehead of said enlarged portion of the pin and causedto adhere tothe back of the articlerto be displayed andi whereby to provide a Vprong by which the article maybe-supported. f l j Y' In testimony whereof I hereunto aix my signature. 1
