Description

O. C. GEORGE .KNOCKDOWN FLOWER BOX AND FERNERY Nov. 27
Filed June 10. 1922 Patented Nov, 27, 1923., a
eras r sic KNOCKDOWN FLOWER AND FERNERY.
' Application filed June 10, 1922. Serial No. 567,271.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. OLLIE C. Gnonen, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the town of Crystal Lake, in the county of McHenry and State of Illinois, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in a Knockdown Flower Box and Fernery; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompany ing drawings, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention'relates to a flower box of improved form which is built in standardized units of such form that the various parts comprising a number of boxes will pack together in the minimum amount of space for storage and transportation.
An object of this invention is to make an attractive looking paneled flower or fern box that will retain its shape under severe conditions of service, and that can be sold in a knocked-down condition and erected by the purchaser without the use of tools other than a pair of pliers.
Another object of this invention is to secure a form of double stepped corner joint that will be stronger, neater and less subiect to leakage under conditions of excessive moisture inside the box. In the ordinary flower box the most objectionable feature is the leakage at all joints which in the case of a painted wooden box means unsightly discolorations of the box and damage to whatever surface the box rests upon.
Hitherto it has been something of a problem to handle a large order for flower boxes and the like because if they are built at a factory, as is the most economical way, the space required for storage and the handling and hauling problems are matters of prime importance for such bulky materials. My invention eliminates these diiiiculties and at the same time produces a better box with more sales appeal to the purchaser.
Other and further important objects of this invention will be apparent from the 'diselosures in the specification and the drawings The invention (in a preferred form) is illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter more fully" described.
On the drawings:
Figure 1' is a front elevation of the device of this invention.
Figure 2 is a slightly enlarged section along the line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary section along the line 33 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a View of four side pieces piled up.
Figure 5 is a view of four end pieces piled up.
As shown on the drawings:
The numeral 1 refers to the identical sides of the box with corner pieces or legs 2 fitted thereto and extending below the bottom of the box and strips 7 attached in any convenient manner on the outside adjacent the top and bottom edges of the material to give a panel effect in connection with the corner pieces 2. The ends of the side pieces have grooves 9 on the inside designed to receive a tongue 10 on the end pieces 8. These end pieces have strips 8 which correspond in position with the pieces 7 used on the side pieces. The groove 10 in connection with the corner pieces 2 forms a double step A plurality of Joint for the end pieces 3. bolts 5 are used to hold the sides in contact with the end pieces and therefore support the bottom 4 which is inserted in the grooves 11 on the inside of the side and end members near their bottom edges. In the preferred form described herein, the sides and ends are constructed of any suitable wood and the corner pieces of either wood or metal. The bottom as shown is metal. It will be apparent that the sides, ends and bottomv can also be artistically constructed of moulded pulp board in avariety of attractive forms. An advantage of pulp boardfor this use is its imperviousness to moisture, as a wood box often's'wells and shrinks.
In assembling this box the bottom can be V placed inthe grooves provided for it in the end pieces and then the side pleces can be slipped over the edges of the bottom and the tongues of the end pieces, and the bolts inserted and tightened to hold the whole assembly.
In the case of extra long boxes, intermediate partitions can be provided, with extra bolts near them to prevent distortion of the box from the weight of its contents.
I am aware that numerous details of construction may be varied through a Wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention:
A container consisting of side members,-
grooves on the inside adjacent the ends of said side members, strips on the outside of the side members adjacent the top and bottom edges of said members, and adapted to give a panel effect to these members, end members, strips similarly arranged'on said end members, tongues on said end members adapted to engage with complementary grooves on the inside of said side members, legs attached to the side members and adapted to conceal the joint between said side and end members, a groove adjacent the inside bottom edges of the side and end members, a bottom member adapted to fit in said groove, and bolts adapted to hold the assembled container together. r
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.

K. A. SKELLY, E. M. CARLSON.
