COMBINATION TOY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 18, 1921.
Application led October 1, 1920.` Serial No. 414,043.
'T all whom it may concern.'
l3e it known that I, JOHN WANAT, a. citizen of the United States of America, residing Combination Toys, ot which the following' is aspecification- This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in combination toys and has particular reference to an improved toy of simple construction adapted to be manipulated with respect to its various parts so as to provide selectively and at will either a pop gun, a water gun or a reed noise gun. The principal object OI" the invention is to provide a toy which may be readily converted from a pop gun to af'water gun.
Another object of the invention is to provide a toy which may he readily converted from a pop gun toa reed noise gun.
Still another object ofthe invention is to provide a water gun which may be readily converted into a reed noise gun.
Other objects will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, and.'
the same consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and claimed.
ln the drawings, wherein like reference ycharacters designate vcorresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a substantially central longitudinal sectional view, partly broken away, ot a toy constructed in accordance with the present invention with its parts disposed to provide a pop gun,
Fig. 2 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in longitudinal section and partly broken away of the device shown in F ig. 1 with its parts arranged to provide a' water n gurig. a is a View similar a. rig. a wat ai@ parts disposed to provide a reed noise gun,
Fig. f1- is an enlarged front end view of the device as shown in'y Fig. 3,.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged transverse sectlonal view taken substantially upon line V-V of?,
Fig. 1, Fig. stopper turned for use as a cordance with Fig. 1, and A' Fig. 7 is an enlarged elevational view of the forward end of the barrel of the toy.
Referring more in detail to the several 6 is a View similar to Fig. 4 with the pop gun 1n acviews, the present invention consists of a barrel .within which is reciprocably mounted'a piston head 6 having a central port D 1n communication with the'longitudinal b ore 8' of a tubular piston rod 9 which carries said head 6. A handle* section 1() is threaded upon the outer end of the piston rod 9 and has a bore 11 communicating with the bore of the piston rod 9. rlhe bore of the section 1() is enlarged and the wall thereof threaded for detachably receiving the screw threaded end 12 of another section 13 of the handle which is also provided with an angular port 14 communicating with the port 11 and with the atmosphere. A suitable form of reed 15 in the form ot a slotted plate is arranged' within the enlarged portion of the bore of the handle section 10 and is clamped against the shoulder 16 of the latter by the inner end of the handle section 13 which is screwed into the section 10.
The bore 7 of the piston head 6 is threaded for detachable reception of a plug 17 for apurpose which will presently ybecome apparent. A stopper 18 ,somewhat similar to the ordinary form offpop gun stopper is rictionally received inthe forward end of .the barrel 5 and has a/ port 19 through the center thereof adapted to he closed at its outer end by means et a threaded plug 20. The forward end of the barrel 5 is provided with an annular groovel 21 forw permitting, one end of a cord 22 or the like to be conveniently secured to the barrel, and the otherrend of said cord is attached by means ot' an eye .23 to the stopper 18. A pair of angular keepers 24 are rigid with the forward end 'of the barrel 5, and a pair of lugs 25'project radially from and are rigid with the stopper 18 whereby when the stopper 18 is positioned as shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 4,.,
end of the barrel 5, and whereby, when the' stopper is positioned as shown in Figs. 1
and 6, said stopper 18 may he forced outwardly of thev barrel 5 upon operation of the piston 6 in the usual manner of operating a pop gun.
1f it is desired to use the device as a pop gun, the plugs 17 and 20 are positioned as showny in Fig. 1 and the handle 'composed of sections -10 and 13 is pulled so as to withdraw `the piston rod 9. Said handle is then forced in the oppositedirection for moving the head 6 inwardly of the barrel 5, thus o5 atmosphere,
compressing the air and forcibly projecting the stopper 18, out oftheend of the barrel 5 whereby the usual popping noise is produced.
' `If it is desired to use the device as a waiter gun, the plug 17 is left in place and the plug 20 is removed as shown in Fig. 2, while the stopper 18 is turned from the position of Fig. 6 to the position of Fig. 4. Water may then be readily drawn int-o the barrelk 5 through the port 19 and forced outwardly through the same as willbe apparent.
When using the device as a reed noise gun, the plug` 20 is replaced and the plug 17 Ais removed, while thel stopper 18 is left in its position of Fig. 4. Upon forcing the piston head and piston rodinwardly when the parts are thus disposed, the air is forced throughthe ports 7 and 8 as well as through port 11, the slots of the reed 15 and port 14 to the atmosphere, whereby a noise is produced in accordance with the type of reed employed.
It is thus to be seen that I have provided a very simple form of combination toy which will provide the amusement of three separate toys now available, a consideration making the invention of considerable merit and salability.
