DESIRE H. VAN HOVE, 0F JACKSON, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO THE JACKSON CUSHION FOUNDATION FOR SPRING STRUCTURES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 24, 1921.
Application filed August 13, 1920. Serial No. 403,297.
spring constructions and to provide a simple,
practical and efiicient foundation for .use in automobiles and similar constructions and adapted to be employed as a foundation for seat springs, backs and the like and capable of enabling the strips or members composing the foundation to be easily and quickly connected and firmly and securely fastened without employing welding, rivets or similar fastening devices. 1
With these and other object in view, the
invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion size and minor details of construction, within the scope of the appendedclaims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof. 1
In the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals of reference designate cor,- responding parts in the several figures Figure 1 is a plan View of a portion of a: foundation constructed in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a reverse plan view of the same.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail sectional view taken longitudinally of one of the channel strips.
Fig. 4 is a similar view taken transversely of one of the channel bars.
Fig. 5- is a detail perspective view of a portion of the channel strip or member.
Fig. 6 is a similar view of a portion of the connecting strip or member.
In the accompanying drawing in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention the foundation for spring structures comprises in its construction spaced channel strips or members land intersectthe channel strips or members.
ward each other and are clampe ing connecting strips or members 2 constructed of flat material and bowed or bent at intervals to provide arched or bent portions 3 which fit within the channels 4. of
The channel strips or members preferably consist of a substantially semi-cylindrical intermediate portion 5 and flat side portions 6, the intermediate portion 5 forming the said channel 4: and being preferably of curved formation as shown. The curved portions or bends 3 of the connecting strips 2 fit within and conform to the configuration of the channels 1 and provide an interlocking connection between the crossed or intersecting strips or members 1 and 2. The flat side portions or flanges 6 of the channel strips fit flat against the flat strips or members 2 at the opposite terminals of the bends or arched portions 3 of the said strip or member 2.
Inorder to securely fasten the strips or members 1 and 2 in their interlocked relation the channel strip or member is provided at its intermediate semi-cylindrical portion 5 with integral tongues 7 cut from the metal of the strip or member 1 and bent inwardly at the openings 8 formed by the cutting of the tongues and the latter are located with- 1n the channel 4 and the members of each pair are spaced apart a. sufficient distance to receive between them the strip or member 2. After the strip or member 2 has been placed in position with its curved portion or bend 3 in the channel 4 between the tongues 7 the latter are bent inwardl toor clenched against the'concave face of the bend or curved portion 3. This forms a simple, efficient and easy means" of readily assemblin and fastening the strips or members toget ier and obviates the necessity of employing rivets, welding or similar fastening means which require an expert in assembling the strips or members. Also the construction will enable the strips or members to be readily separated without injuring the same should it be necessary or desir-' the foundation in any suitable manner as.
the manner of mounting the springs or analogous structure does not constitute a portion of the present invention.
What is claimed is 1. A foundation for spring structures including channel strips or members composed of intermediate channel portions and flat or members, and tongues formed integral with the channel strips or members and ex- I tending into the channels thereof and engaging the connecting strips or members to secure the said strips or members in their interlocked relation.
2. A foundation for spring structures including channel strips or members composed of intermediate channel portions and flat side portions, and intersecting or connecting strips or members fitted against the fiat side portions of the channel members and provided at intervals with bent portions extending into and fitting the channels of the channel portions to interlock the said strips or members, and tongues formed integral with the channel strips or members and located at the intermediatechannel portions of the same, said tongues being dis- 1 tions of the said connecting strips or mem- 3.)
bersl C v 3. A foundation for spring structures ineluding channel strips or members each composed of an intermediate substantially i semi-cylindrical portion and flat side portions, the intermediate portion being rovided with integral tongues arrange -in pairs and bent inwardly into the channel formed by the said intermediate portion, and flat intersecting strips or members fitted against the flat side portions of the channel strips or members and curved atintervals and fitting within the semi-cylindrical intermediate portions of the channel strips or members and also fitting between the said tongues the latter being bent into engage ment with the connecting strips or members and securing the parts in their interlocked relation.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto affixed my signature.
