Description

V. J'. VAN HORN.
TALLY 1"ABLEL APPLICATION HLED 00124, 1917.
Patented Feb. 15, 1921.
ENT ortica.
VANDIVER J'. VAN' HORN, OF CI-IICGO, ILLINOIS.
TALLY-Tannen Application filed October 24, 191'?. Serial No. 198,286.
To all whom 'it may concern.' c
Be it knownthat I, Vnivnrvni: J. VAN HORN, a citizenof the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cool; and State ot' Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tally-Tablets. of which the following is a specilication. My invention relates to tally tablets. One oi the objects oi' my invention is to provide a tally tablet having one or more series of correlated indicia, normally covered by tabs that are adapted to be removed, one after another in sequential order, thereby indicating in numerical order, the number of tabs that have been removed to tally with some other act such as inserting a coin in a receptacle or the like.
Other and further objects of my invention will become readily apparent to persons skilled in the art from a consideration of the following' description when taken in conjunction with the drawing wherein Figure l is a side elevation of a coin-receiving envelop with the tally tab located thereon.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged line 2-2 of Fig. l.
In both views theA same reference elmracters indicate similar parts. In the d awing I have shown my tally tablet in associasection taken on tion with a coin receptacle such as disclosed in my Patent No. 1239143 granted to me on the 41th day of Sept., 1917.
In the embodiment illustrated in the accompanying drawing 5 represents a coin receiving envelop having an aperture 6 through one wall within which to insert a coin. Inthis particular structure the tabreceiving surface may be provided by the outside of the `front wall of the envelop. y
The surface 8, underlying the tabs 9, is divided by any suitable means into separated areas 10. In the )articular disclosure the areas are divided ]by lines 11. The areas are marked with indicating figures from 1 to 12 inclusive, progressively in numerical value. Each area is covered with a removable tab 9 glued to the surface 8,` at one end, leaving a free end 9 projecting from said surface by which the tab may be pulled away7 when caught between the thumb and finger to expose the indicia therebelow. Y
The tabs covering` the areas from 1 to 36 inclusive, above the line 12 are marked Pennies by the exposed word above the first line of tabs. The tabs covering area-s, or spaces between the lines 12 and 13S- marked Nickels are intended to represent coins live cents in value and the tabs covering'the areas or spaces below the line 13 marked Dimes represent coins ten cents in value.
'The use and operation oit the device is as follows: lllhen a coin is dropped into the coin receptacle a tab representing the value et the coin is removed from the tablet. rissinningI that the receptacle does not containr any coins, then all of the numerals in the separated areas are covered by tabs.
rIwo tabs have been removed :troni the series of spaces representing pennies from the top line of the tablet exposing the numeral 2. This indicated that two pennies have been placed within the coin receptacle' '5. Furthermore the tablet shows-that three nickelsv and five dimes have been placed within the receptacle because numeral i5 is visible yin the nickel series and 5 is visible in the dime series. Should another coin be placed within the receptacle another tab Correspendingx with the value of the coin should be removed until the entire number of tabs has been displaced.
The total column shows, at the end of each horizontal series ot areas, the total value of the coins within the receptacle when the tabs ttor that series have been all removed. The total designation below the first line includes the second line. for example, il all the tabs Yin the two first lines have been. removed there are twenty-four cents in the receptacle. The entire value ol coins that may be tallied by the illustrated embodiment live dollars an d sixteen cents ($5.16).
The tally tab may be used with a, coin receptacle in connection with a telephone, to indicate, from time to time the number ot coins within the coin receptacle. There are many other similar uses where the device may be employed 'tocorrectly tally an act or thing in the manner described. It may be used by fruit pickers, who may be given a tab `for each basket or box of fruit picked and delivered and who may be paid at an agreed rate in accordance with the number of tabs he has in his possession.
Having described my inventiem what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let- 'ters Patent, is
1. A tally sheet of the character described Specification of Letters Patent. patenfd Fb, 15, 1921.
having a Surface divided into a series of separate areas, each area yshowing a suitable indication, When-exposed; a plurality of separable talos'covering` said surface, one for each area, said tabs arranged in ,overlapping relation, each tab to expose a given area when removed.
Q. A tally Sheet oi' the character described, having' a surface divided into a series of separate areas, each area Showing Vanindication ol' numerical Value, when exposed; a plurality of loverlapping, Vseparable dabs, cow-mimil said euuffacey one overlying' each area, adapted to oe removed in sequential order zo expose the areas therebelow in pro-` gressive values, the last area of the Series to be exposed indicating an aggregae value of the remaining areas ofwsaid series.
1,3eeysie7V 3. A tally sheet of lie character described Y `having a surface divided into a plurality of groupe, eacli groupfeomprising a series oi separate areas, each area showing an indrcation of numerical value 'when exposed; a
vplurality of overlapping separable tabs eove erinlg said areas, one overlying each area,
Vadapted ro. be renioif'ed in sequential order to expose Jalle area liercbelo'w in progressive value,``ne last area of a series tobe exposed,.constiuting a group. indicating an aggregate Value of the remaining areas of 'the greup, the last tal) of group exposing an indication Showing' the aggregate Value o' the group. l y i 1 ln testimony `Wliereoi I hereunto Set my hand.
