To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALLEN J. WArJrER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Mansfield, in the county of Rlchland and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Sound and Heating Elements, of
i which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combined sound and heating element.
It is well known to those skilled in the art of treating certain diseases of the gemtal and urinary organs arising from bacterial infection that subjecting the organs to a high temperature 11. c. exceeding 106 degrees Fahrenheit will enervate or destroy gonorrheal and such other bacilli that produces an abnormal state in the genital and urinary organs.
The primary object of the present invention is to construct a surgical instrument or sound that is provided with an electrically energized resistance heating element and combine said elements or devices in such a manner as to provide a unitary structure for insertion or introduction into the organs and also with means for producing heat.
A further object is to provide a self-contained means of combining a heating element with a surgical sound in such a manner as to provide a substantially unitary structure for exploring or sounding an opening in the body and means of conducting an electric current to the sound for generating heat in the instrument.
These and other objects are attained by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:

Fig. 3 is an end view of Fig. 2.
In the drawings reference numeral 1 represents an ordinary tubular member comprising a sound of conventional form and design. The sound is provided with a sleeve insulator 2 which is fitted within the tubular member.
A terminal or cap 3 is fitted to the enlarged end 4 of the sound closing the interior of the tubular member and providing means of connecting an electric current thereto.
The terminal 3 on its inner face is provided with an aperture 5 to receive and secure one end of a core 6. The core is made of any character or kind of material that is known to be a nonconductor of electricity preferably glass, mica or the like. The core 6 is preferably surrounded by a coil of resistance wire or the like 7 to provide a heating element. The length, kind of material, size of the resistance wire or heating element can be varied to provide for heating same to a predetermined temperature, or if desired the temperature of the heating element or wire can be regulated by a rheostat.
The instrument is connected with opposite poles of a battery or the like through the medium of a prong slip socket 8 which conducts the current to and through the heating resistance element 7 generating a predetermined amount of heat which is regulated in the manner hereinbefore described. The instrument is applied by introducing it into the orifice in the body that is to be treated in the ordinary manner thereby expanding the orifice.
An electric current is then applied to the sound which heats the same to a temperature that will destroy the germs or bacilli. It will be noted that by the use of the above described instrument that the function of expanding or dilating the orifice and producing heat to destroy the germs or bacteria is accomplished without removing the instrument from the orifice, thereby providing means of performing both functions with only one application of the instrument.
The invention is not restricted to the precise construction and combination of parts shown and described as immaterial alterations may be made without departing from the spirit of the present invention.
I claim 1. In a combined sound and heating ele ment in combination, a tubular member, a sleeve insulator fitted within said member, a core arranged within the interior of said tubular member and insulator, and a resistance element wound around said core and adapted when an electric current is conducted thereto to resist same thereby generating heat.
2. In a combined sound and heating element comprising a tubular member, a core provided with a resistance coil secured thereto and means to conduct an electric current to said resistance coil.
3. In a sound, a heating element associated therewith and means to conduct an electric current to the heating element, as and for the purpose described.
4:. In a tubular sound, a core fitted within the sound, means to insulate the core from the sound, a heating resistance element associated with the core and means to conduct an electric current to the resistance element.
5. The combination of a tubular sound and an associated heating element, means of securing'thesound to the heating element and insulating the same therefrom, and means of conducting an electric current to the heating element which element resists the current thereby generating heat as and for the purpose described.
6. In a sound, a resistance heating element associated therewith, means to insulate the sound from the heating element, and means to conduct an electric current to the heating element to generate heat.
7. A tubular sound in combination with an associated heating element, means of securing the sound to and insulating same from the heating element, and means to conduct an electric current to the heating element which resists same thereby generating heat.
.8. A. combined sound and heat resistance element comprising a self-contained sound structure with means of conducting an electric current to the heating element for generating heat.
9. A tubular sound, in combination with a resistanceheating element which is fitted within the interior of said sound, and means of conducting an electric current to the heating l men '10. In a sound, a heating element assoeiated therewith which is" adapted to be heated 'by resisting the flow of an electric current and means to conduct an electric current to the element.
