Be it known that I, James Ivory, a.
subject of the King of (ii-eat Britain, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Rubbcr-Dam-(llamp Forceps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in forceps for a rubber dam clamp which may be of the order of double bow labial buccal or other clamp, and consists of novel means on the jaws of the forceps adapted to form a plurality of attachments for the jaws with a member of the clamp, whereby the latter is firmly engaged by and c011- nected with the forceps and so the clamp may be carried steadily by the forceps and fitted upon a tooth without liability of turning on or over the j aws of the forceps and vice versa, and also to curve around the bow of such clamp.
It consists also of a novel attachment for the handles of the forceps, as will be hereinafter described.
The invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but the important instrumentalitics thereof may be varied, and so it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific details shown and described, as long as they are within the spirit or scope of the claims.

Referring to the drawings,
1 designates the jaws of a rubber dam clamp forceps, and 2 designates the handles thereof.
. On the outer terminal of each jaw are pluralities of beaks 3 which consist of the central beak and the side beaks 5, the latter being shorter than the beak l, said beaks 4; and 5 projecting angularly down from the jaws in the direction toward a rubber dam clamp, which latter may be of well known construction, but of a type shown in the drawings having clamping jaws 6 with openings 7 therein, for engagement of the beaks lof the forceps, it being noticed that in using the forceps said ce1i tral beaks 4; are inserted in the apertures 7 of the clamp, while the side beaks 5 rest contactingly on adjacent portions of the jaws of the clamp so as to steady the same and limit the penetration of the central beaks, whereby the clamp is firmly engaged by the forceps at different places by the phu'alities of beaks assisted by the tension of the bow of the clamp, and so the beaks are connected tightly with the clamp, they being spaced apart on the latter in different positions, \lZ., in the centers and sides ofthe aws of the terminal portions of the clamp, and so the latter is prevented from rocking or turning on the jaws of the forceps and vice versa.
To provide for the pluralities of beaks, the terminal portions of the jaws are widened forming arms 8 on which said beaks are disposed and with which they are formed or otherwise connected.
The beaks are shown three in number in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, and two in number in Fig. i.
The central beaks are provided on their outer ends with a knob-like member 4 on the end thereof, the same being adapted to guide the beaks into the apertures 7, and assist in preventing improper di .ronnection of the beaks from the clamp and vice versa. The jaws 1 are deflected outwardly or laterally and thereby widenedout as at 1", whereby they pass fully around the bow of the clamp without interference thereof.
9 designates guard pieces which are adapted to be applied to the grip portions of the handles of the forceps and conforming to the contours thereof, said pieces being formed of suitable sheet metal stamped into shape and having therein grooves '10 which are adapted to receive tongues 11 on the edges of the handles forming mortises which when properly brazed, headed or otherwise subjected, serve to hold the pieces 9 tightly on the handles, it being noticed that said pieces present broad and rounded surfaces for the contact of the hand of the dentist rendering the work of operation of the forceps comfortable tothe hand and pro viding a better control of the handles of the forceps.
In order to provide additional means for securing the guard pieces 9 t0 the handles their rear ends which are adapted to form tongues are inserted in grooves 12 in the rear terminals of said handles and held tightly therein, the walls of said grooves inclosing the rear ends of said pieces and covering the raw edges thereof thus guarding the hands of the dentist from said edges, the effect of which is evident.
In Fig. 8 I show the beaks somewhat bent in a bayonet form and a curved downward widened portion having a central beak to engage the clamp in the aperture thereof, also side beaks that rest on the base of the clamp front and back of said aperture central of the clamp as in the other figures helping to keep the clamp level at the control of the operator as he adjusts the clamp to the neck of the tooth and also to press the jaws down on said tooth as is sometimes necessary in the placing of a labial or buccal cavity clamp when thegum has to be pressed away by the jaw of the clamp.

A forceps for a rubber dam clamp having on the outer terminals of the jaws a plurality of beaks extending angularly therefrom, the central beak being adapted to enter an opening in the clamp and the other beaks adapted to contact with the adjacent portions of said clamp to steady the latter and limit the degree of penetration of said central beak, the central beak having on its free end a knob-like member.
3. A forceps for a rubber dam clamp having on the outer terminals of the jaws a plurality of beaks extending angularly therefrom, the central beak being adapted to enter an opening in the clamp and the other beaks being adapted to contact with the adjacent portions of said clamp to stead) the latter and limit the degree of penetration of said central beak, the jaws of the forceps being deflected laterally whereby they are adapted to curve around the bow of the clamp.

In forceps for a rubber dam clamp having the grip portion of its handles provided with a guard attachment formed of a piece adapted to increase the side surface of said grip, impart comfort to the hand of the operator and form a better control of the forceps, and tongue and groove connections on said piece and grip portion for rigidl connecting the sides of the former with the latter as one.
5. A forceps for a rubber dam clamp having on the grip of its handle portion a guard attachment engageable by the hand of the operator, the same consisting of a piece applicable to said portion, the latter having in its outer terminal a groove in which the rear terminal of said piece is seated.
