VANITY-CASE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, \VILLIAM G. KENDALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vanity-Cases, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to vanity cases and more particularly to that type which are designed to contain two kinds of cosmetics as for example a face powder cake and a rouge cake, although the invention is not limited in its usefulness to the housing of powder cakes as other forms of 00s metics might be equally as well arranged within the case. Where two dissimilar cosmetics are to be housed in a single container as in the instance of the present invention, it is, of course, desirable that they be kept separated so that they cannot become comingled. The present invention therefore has as one of its objects to so construct the case that the two cosmetics, as for example the face powdercake and the rouge cake, will be so housed in separate compartments as to prevent any loose powder from either cake reaching the surface of the other cake.

Another object of the invention is to so construct the article that when the same is closed, one cosmetic compartment will cover and act as a closure for the other compartment, the cover for the case as a whole, in turn serving to cover and close the firstmentioned compartment, so that when the .case is completely closed both compartments will be closed in a substantially airstight manner so that the cosmetics may retain their fragrance and will not be subject to deterioration.

Another object of the invention is to so construct the case that access to the most frequently employed cosmetic may be read ily had by merely opening the lid of the case and without exposing the other cosmetic or opening the compartment or tray in which it is contained.

A further object of the invention is to utilize the lid of the case as a means for holding the-two sections of the case in relativel closed position and so that they cannot e swung openuntil the lid itself has been swung upwardly to open position.

A further object of the invention is to provide for the assemblage and securing to gether of all of the members and elements of the device without the employment of solder, rivets, or any individual fastening means, thus rendering the article less expensive to manufacture and capable of more ready and expeditious assemblage of its parts.

Another object of the invention is to so construct the case that when fully opened, both cosmetics will be exposed for use and the case as a whole may be placed in up right position upon any suitable supporting surface, with the mirror within the lid of the case also in upright position so as to add greatly to the convenience of using the article.

In the accompanying drawings:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the case embodying the present invention, the same being shown closed;

Generally speaking, the body of the case is substantially in the form of a hollow cylinder closed atl its lower end and divided from end to end diametrically into two halves or sections. However, the said body of the case may be other than of cylindrical form if desired. In the drawings the said body of the case is indicated in general by the numeral. 1 and the same comprises two sections one of which is indicated by the numeral 2 and the other by the numeral 3. Each of these sections, of course, includes a substantially semi-cylindrical wall 4 and a substantially semi-circular bottom wall 5 and when the sections are closed upon the hinge which connects them' as will be presently explained. the edges of the walls 4 and 5 of the two sections will abut and match to form the body of the shape above mentioned. The sections 2 and 3 are formed respectively at one vertical edge of the Wall 4, with pintle lugs 6, which when the sections are assembled, interdigitate, and a pintle 7 is fitted through the matching lugs so as to hingedly connect together the said sections.

The upper edge portions of the walls 4 of the sections 2 and 3 are either struck in to provide or are provided each with a semiannular rim. 8 extending around the interior of the said wall 4-, and when the sections are closed, the ends of the two rim portions, course, register so as to form the complete rim. The lid of the case as a whole is indicated in general by the numeral 9 and the same incluC s a flat body or top 10 and a depending circuniscribing flange or rim ll which, when the lid is in closed position, is designed to lit down over the rim #5 and trictionally lit the same so as to not only retain the lid in closed position but also loci: the two sections of the body of the case against swinging movement away from each other. In order to hingedly connect the lid with the body, the section 2-3 of the body is provided in its rim 8 with slot 12, the tor-mation of which slot results in a relatively narrow portion lving between the slot and. the upper edge ot the rim and constituting a. pintle indicated by the numeral 18. 'l-he flange 11 of the lid 9 is provided at a point in its circumference with an extension 14: which is fitted through the slot 12 and bent to substantially sleeve-like form as to surround the pintle portion 13. ln this manner without the employment of any so arate and distinct hinge required to be riveted or otherwise secured to the section 8 and lid 9, the said lid may be readily and conveniently hingedly connected with the said section. At a point pref rably diametrically opposite the extension .l l. the flange or rim 11. of the lid 9 is prezeral'ily provided with an outwardly projecting finger-piece 15 by means of which it may be readily swung to open position. It is preferable that a mirror 16 be arranged within the lid 9 as is usual in articles of this general type.

In the illustrated embodiment of the invention, the case is designed to house a pad containing a cake of face powder and a pad containing a cake of rouge, and also t vo powder putts by means oil. which the cosmetics may be applied. in order to house the cosmetics and. the applying pulls, the pres ent invention contemplates the provision of two trays, one carried in the lower portion of the section 2 and the other in the upper portion of the section 3. The first-men tioned tray is indicated by the numeral 17 and the secondanentioned tray by the numeral 18. The tray 17 relati ely deep and comprises a cylindrical wall l9 and av bottom. 20, and the upper edge of the wall 19 is formed at intervals in one half oi its circumitercnce with upstanding tongues 21 which, in the assemblage of the tray 1? with the section 2, are bent outwardly and fitted through slots 22 it'ormed in the wall l: ot the section 2. the tongues being then bent upwardly as clearly shown in l 2 of the drawings so as to secure th tray in place. The bottom 20 ot the tray rests upon the bottom 5 of the section 2. the said bot tom 5 extending, of course, beneath one-halt of the bottom 20 ot the tray, and one-halt ot the circumference oi. the wall 19 of the tray is disposed snugly against the inner taco ot the wall l of the said section 2. pad 23 containing a tablet or cake 2% of rouge is disposed and held by friction in the bottom of the tray ll and a. powder pull is housed within the upper portion of said tray 17 and rests upon the said cake Q l as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. its the tray i7 is relatively deep, it will completely house both the cosmetic and the powder putt, and it occupies substantially the lower halt ot the casing when the sections of the casing are closed together.

The tray 18 is relatively shallow and include a cylindrical wall 26 and a bottom 27, and as in the case of the tray 1?, the upper edge oil the wall 26 is provided with upstanding tongues 28 corresponding to the tongue 21 and adapted to be bent outwardly and inserted through slots or openings 29 termed in the upper portion of the wall l of the section 3, the ends of these tongues after such insertion through the slots, being bent downwardly as shown in Fig. l. of the drawings. The numeral 30 indicates pad containing a cake 31 of face powder, and the numeral 32 indicates a powder putt for employment in connection with the cake 31. The pad 30 is disposed within the bottom of the tray 18 and he said pad and cake are completely housed within the said tray. The upper edge of the wall 26 of the tray 18 does not, however, extend to the extreme upper edge the body section 3 but, on the other hand, terminates beneath and preferably abuts against the shoulder formed by providing the rim 8. Thus what the tray l8 lacks in height as compared with the tray 17 is supplied by the rim 8 which, of course, completely surrounds the top of the tray 18 when the body sections oi? the case are closed together, and thus the tray is given sutlicicnt depth to properly house the pull will be apparent from the foregoing description ot the invention and from inspection oi. the drawings that ready access may be had to the cosmetic which is most trequently employed. namely, the taco powder cake 31, by merely swinging up the lid 5) to the vertical position shown in Fig. 2 without, however, swinging apart th: sections 2 and 1 of the body of the case. lllhus when it i. desired to use only this particular cosmetic, this may be done without opening or exposing the interior of the tray 17. Of course, when it is desired to gain access to the rough cake, the two sections 2 and 3 will be swung apart upon their hinge in the manner shown in Fig. 2 ot the drawings, and with the sections thus positioned, the article as a whole may be placed upon a dresser top or any other suitable support and be thus very conveniently employed in asmuch as both cosmetics are exposed for use and the mirror within the lid is in upright position immediately behind the tray 18.

Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is:

In an article of the class described, a casing comprising two substantially semi-cylindrical sections each having a bottom and each being open at its top, each section at the upper edge of its wall being provided with a rim, hinge connection between the walls at one side whereby when the sections are swung together the chordal edges of their bottoms Will meet and the ends of their rims will also meet a tray secured within one section and resting upon the bottom thereof, a tray secured within the upper portion of the other section and arranged to lie above the first mentioned tray when the sections are closed, and a lid for closing the top of the casing hinged to the rim of one section and arranged in closed position to fit about the rims of the two sections.
