W. BLASCO.
PORTABLE STAND.
APPLIGA'TIQN FILED JULY 24, 19M).

WALTER BLASCO, OE ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA.
PORTABLE STAND.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 11, 1920.
Application filed July 24, 1919. Serial No. 313,117.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, lVAL'rnR BLAsco, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Stands, of
p which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a portable stand, and more particularly to the class of portable adjustable stands or supports for electric lamps.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a stand or support of th1s character wherein an adjustable 'uprlght carries a toggle arm which can be readily extended to position the electric lamp at the desired point in close proximity to a workman so that proper light from the lamp will be had for the convenience of the Workman, the toggle arm for the electric lamp being of novel form to assure easy and quick adjustment for the proper posltionlng of the lamp, which may be swung either laterally or vertically in the adjustment thereof at the will of the user.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a stand or support of this character, wherein the same is readlly portable and the electric lamp can be elevated the proper height from a foundation or floorlng and said lamp properly adjusted to meet the fancy of the user, the stand or support being of novel form to allow convenient adjustment of the lamp and also to hold the same in its adjusted position.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a stand or support of this character, which is extremely simple in construction, very reliable andefficient in its purpose, strong, durable and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure l is a side elevation of a stand or support constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a detail fra mentary perspective view of the guide for t e toggle arm, showing one of the braces disconnected therefrom.
Fig. 3 is a detail view of one of the joints the support showing the parts separated. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary perspective view of the hanger clamp for the toggle arm.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail the stand or support comprises a circular base 5 having at its periphery opposed feet 6 the same being preferably in the form of ears and are adapted to receive suitable fasteners for securing the base to a foundation or flooring. Rising centrally from the base 5 is a hollow pedestal or tubular column 7, the same being reinforced at its upper end through the medium of an external collar 8 having threaded therein aset screw 9 for fastening an intermediate tubular section 10 in adjusted position in said column 7, the section 10 being telescoped within said section 7, while telescoped within the said section 10 is an upper tubular section 11, the section 10 at its uppermost end being formed with an external reinforcing collar 12 having threaded therein a set screw 13 which fastens the section 11 in adjusted position within said section 10 as will be clearly apparent.
Fitted within the upper tubular section is a rod 14, the same being fastened in adjusted position in said section through the medium of a set screw 15 threaded in the reinforcing collar 16 on the upper end of said section 11.. The sections 10, 11 and the rod 14 together with the pedestal or column 7 rising from the base 5 constitute an extensible upright. I
Embracing the upper end of the rod 14 is a clamp comprising a pair of strap irons or plates 17 which are connected together on opposite sides of the rod through the medium of transverse bolts or rivets 18 and in this manner the clamp is fastened upon the rod. Connected to one of the transverse bolts or rivets 18 is the angle arm 19 of a brace, the collar 20 of which embraces the rod 14 as is clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 4 of the drawing. The brace including the arm 19 the rocking of the clamping plates 17 upon the rod 14 and also serves to materially strengthen said clamp.
Connected to the other transverse bolt or rivet 18 of the clamp on the rod 14 are laterally divergent hanger arms 21 having the and the collar 20 serves to prevent fork extremities 22 for the mounting therein of a guide which is in the form of a housing 23 of elongated formation having therein a longitudinal way, groove or channel 2 opening through one face thereof, the elongated housing 23 being vertically disposed and is fastened in the forks 22 through the medium of transverse bolts 25 passed through the fork and through the ends of said housing. Connected with the guide constituted by the housing 23 is a toggle arm including the inner and outer pairs of pivotally connected levers 26 and 27 respectively,
7 one of the levers 26 being pivotally connected to the uppermost bolt 25 connecting the guide with one of the hanger forks 22, while the other lever 26 has its free end slidably en gaged in the way, groove or channel 24: in the housing 23 so that the toggle arm can be extended or contracted as will be clearly apparent.
Connected to the free end of one of the levers 27 of the toggle arm is a brake jointed bracket comprising the arms 28 and 29 re spectively, the arm 29 being swingly connected for vertical movement to the free end of one of the levers 27 through the medium of a transverse bolt 30, while surrounding the bolt is a coiled spring 31, the ends thereof being engaged with washers 32 which together with said spring 31 are interposed between the free end of the lever 27 and the adjacent end of the arm 29 of the bracket. Thus it will be seen that the bracket including the arms 28 and 29 when swung vertically will be frictionally held in adjusted position on the toggle arm. The arms 28 and 29 are pivotally connected together through the medium of a bolt 38 which has surrounding the same a coiled spring 84 the latter playin against washers 35 wl1ich together with the spring 3a are interposed between the adjacent ends of the arms 28 and 29 of the bracket so that on horizontally adjusting the arm 28 of said bracket'it will be firmly held in adjusted position relative to the arm 29 thereof. In the use of this bracket both vertical and horizontal adjustment can be had. On the outer end of the arm 28 is mounted an electric'light socket fixture 36 carrying an elec trlc light bulb 37 and a reflector 38 of any a pproveed type, the electric conductor 39 for the bulb or lamp 37 being trained through guide eyes 40 mounted upon the bracket and toggle arm. 7
Formed on the collar 12 is an eye 4:1 for the detachable connection therein of a brace in the form of a double hook rod'a2 which is also adapted to be detachably engaged in an eye l3 designed to be fastened into a vertical support or wall and in this manner the upright of the stand or support will be 1 prevented from tilting over when the toggle arm is extended as will be obvious.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction and manner of use of the device will be clearly understood and therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted.
What is claimed is:
1. A support or stand of the character described comprising a base, an extensible upright carried by the base, a clamp on the upper end of the upright, a hanger carried by the clamp, a toggle arm, a fixed guide mounted in the hanger and having one of the levers of the toggle pivoted therein, while another of said levers of the toggle slidably engages in the guide, a lamp carrying bracket mounted on the toggle arm, a collar engaging the upper end of the upright and having an arm connected with the clamp, said bracket being formed in two section s, and means swingingly connecting the sections together and also to the toggle arm for permitting vertical and horizontal adj ustment, forked ends on said hanger for receiving the guide, the pivot connecting one toggle arm in the guide being engaged in one of the forked ends, and a removable fastener engaged in the other forked end and a pin for removably connecting the latter therein.
2. A support or stand of the character described comprising a base, an extensible upright carried by the base, a clamp on the upper end of the upright, a hanger carried by theclamp, a toggle arm, a guide mounted in the hanger and having one of the levers of the toggle pivoted therein, while another of said levers of the toggle slidab'ly engages in the guide, and a lamp carrying bracket mounted on the toggle arm, a collar engaging the upper end ofthe upright and having an arm connected with the clamp, said bracket being formed in two sections, means swingingly connecting the sections, together, and also to the toggle ,arm for permitting vertical and horizontal, adjustment, and a brace detachably connectedwith the upright and adapted for connection with a wall anchored device.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature hereto.
WALTER BLASGO.
