UNITED STATES PATENT o IoE.
KNAPP, 0F SYRACUSE, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO E. J. KNAIPP CANDLE AND WAX 00., INC., OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
SANCTUARY-LAMP.
'Application filed April 28, 1919. Serial No. 293,147.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD J. KNAPP, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Sanctuary-Lamp, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to candle lamps and has for its object certain improvements in candle or sanctuary lamps of the type described in my Patent No. 1,255,614, Feb. 5, 1918, by which the candle and melted grease in the cupped base is caused to be almost entirely consumed and by which-outlets and a receptacle is provided to receive any grease running over the cupped base or down the candle which would otherwise obstruct the seating of the cap of the candle on the base and prevent proper burning of the candle.
The invention consists in the novel features and in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed. e In describing this invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawings in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of this lamp, the candle being shown in elevation.
Figs. 2' and 3 are, respectively, a plan and inverted plan of the cupped base.
Fig. 1. is a vertical sectional view through the cap and base, showing the cap seated on the base after the candle is nearly consumed.
1 designates the main frame or holder of the lamp which is here shown as a tubu-. lar glass shell open at its top and having a depending bottom 2 which contracts inwardly and downwardly and terminates in an ornamental piece as a ball The bottom confines a cavity for the receptacle to be hereinafter described.
The frame or holder is here-shown as adapted for a hanging lamp and is provided with suitable means as chains 4 by means of which it may be carried or suspended.
The frame or holder may be of any other suitable form, size and construction.
5 is the cupped base in which the candle 6 is mounted and 7 is a receptacle in which the base 5 is seated, said receptacle including an annular side wall and an inwardly and downwardly extending bottom 8 extending into the cavity of the bottom 2 of the frame or holder 1. 4
The bottom of the receptacle adjoining the annular wall is annular and flat and forms a' seat or ledge 9 for the base- 2. Said base is provided with a ring 10 which encircles the body of said base, and this ring is provided with an outwardly ex-.
tending base flange 11 formed with corru gations 12 which are here shown as circular. The ring also has an upright conical peripheral surface 13 above the flange 11 with which the inner face of the cap engages. The ring 10 is preferably formed of hard rubber while the cap 15 is formed of lass.
he annular wall of the receptacle 7 is spaced apart from the base 5 and the base 'is provided with spacing lugs 14 on its lower side which rest on the ledge 9 and provide passages from the upper part of the receptacle 7 into the bottom 8 thereof for any melted wax or grease that may overflow'the base 5 and otherwise accumulate on the flange 11 or ring 10 or in the upper part of the receptacle, and prevent the cap 15 from seating on the ring 10. This cap 15 is substantially the same asin my patent referred to. e
In the lamp of my patent, the melted wax or grease sometimes overflowed the cupped base and accumulated on the ring so that the.
cap could not seat substantially evenly but by this construction and by the corrugations 11, most of the wax runs off and any remaining on the ring accumulates in the corrugation or is flattened in the corrugations as the cap seats.
' In order that the butt of the candle or the melted wax or grease may be almost entirely consumed the wick 16 of the candle is increased in thickness at 17 at its lower end melted grease or wax as 18 in the cupped base ins'uflicient quantity to feed the flame, or fast enough to prevent the flame from being smothered in-the melted grease or wax.
As here shown the wick is held in the prongs 19 of a disk 20 at the lower end of the candle as in m patent referred to, and the wick is double back to increase the size of the wick in the butt of the candle. The bottom of the holder is also provided with suitable air holes 21,
. so as to provide enough wick to draw the base, the candle having the lower portion of its wick of greaterthicknessthanthe re- 1 mainder of the wick which thickened portion of :the wick is located in that part of the candle at the bottom of the cup' shaped base, substantially as and for the purpose described.
the base and a cap on the candle having the 2. A candle lamp including a cuppedbase having an outwardly extending annular flange formed with corrugated upperfaces, a candle mounted in the base, and a cap on the candle having its lower end face movable into positionto rest 'on said corrugated face as the candle shortens, substantially as and for the purpose specified. T 3. A candle lamp including acupped base having an outwardly extending annular flange formed with a corrugated upper face, and an upwardly tapering comcal face above said corrugated face, a candle mounted -m inner face of its lower end portion arra ed to engage the conical face and its lower e ge tially face engage said corrugated face, substanas and for the purpose set forth.
'4. A candle lamp including a cupped base having an outwardly extending annular flange formed with a corrugated upper face and also having a conical face above the flange, a receptacle in which the base is mounted having means for supporting the base above and spaced apart from the bottom of the receptacle to form a receivin space below the base and passages from the upper part of the receptacle to the receiving space, a candle supported in the base and a cap for the candle having its lower end I movable into engagement with the corrugated face as the candle shortens, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
5. A'candle lamp including a cupped base a receptacle below the base, the receptacle including an annular wall and inwardly and downwardly contracting portions, the base beingsupported on the portion of the bottom adjoining the annular wall and having passages between its bottom and said portion of the bottom of the receptacle and a candle supported in the base, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof, l have hereunto signed my name, at Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, this 21st day 0 A ia 1919.
