COMBINATION DRAWING-CABINET.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, EUGENE M. WILSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Savannah, in the county of Chatham-,'State of Georgia, have'invented a new and useful Combination Drawing- Cabinet; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full.
clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to a drawing cabinet, and has for its object toprovide a device of this character which embodies 15 novel features of construction whereby it can be' collapsed into a small amount of space when not in use and quickly expanded into operative position when it is desired to use it for drawing purposes.
Further 0b]8 CtS of the invention are to provide a device of this character which is comparatively simple and inexpensive 111 its construction, which can be easily and quickly manipulated without difficulty, which provides a convenient storage space for the drawing board and drawing materials, and which can be easily moved from place to place.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel combinations and arrangements of the parts as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the novel features thereof being pointed out in the appended claims. V a
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be'had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a draw .ing cabinet constructed in accordance with the invention, the drawing board being shown as swung upwardly into operative position, and the door of one of the end compartments being open.
Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view through the drawing cabinet, with the drawing board swung upwardly into operative position.
Fig. 3 is a similar view with the drawing board swung. downwardly into inoperative position.
' Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the drawing cabinet, with the drawing board in operative position, portions being brollgen away and shown in section.
Fig. 5 is a detail view of one of the cam hingfl.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Patented Nov. 18, 1919.
Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view of one of the hinges for the drawing board.
Fig. 7 is a vertical transverse sectional view through the upper portion of a modified form of cabine Fig. 8 is a detail view of one of the U- a shaped clips which are employed in the modified construction.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in-the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
Specifically describing the present embodiment of the invention, the numeral 1 designates the top of the cabinet which is comparatively long and narrow and has substantially the height of a table. The body portion A of the cabinet is supported upon casters 2 so that the cabinet can be conveniently rolled from place to place, and is subdividcd into a central compartment B which opens through the front o f. the cabinet, and narrow end compartments which are adapted to receive rolls of paper or thelike, and which may open either through the front. or ends of the compartment. In the present instance the end compartments C are provided at the front of the casing with doors 3. The large central compartment B is normally closed at the front of the casing by a pair of doors 4, said doors being hinged at 5 to the opposite sides of the door opening amlbeing arranged to swing outwardly in opposite directions. The hinges 5 of the front doors as are preferably formed with knuckles having cam faces 5 at the meeting ends thereof so that the doors will be slightly lower as they are swung outwardly. The arrangement of the cams 5 is such that when the doors 4 are closed the upper ends thereof are in substantial engagementwith the top of the front opening of the cabinet, and the lower edges of the doors are lifted above the floor, thereby enabling the cabinet to be moved freely from place to place upon the casters 2. lVhen the front doors 4: are swung outwardly into an open position, as indicated by Fig. 1, they are lowered a sufficient amount to bring the lower edges thereof into engagement with the floor and to provide the necessary clearance space above the upper ends thereof to provide for the thibkness of .thedrawing board 6. The loi 'wering of the "doors due to the cam action of the hinges 5 is substantially equal to the thicknessof the drawing board 6,
and with the lower edges of the doors in engagement with the floor, it will be understood that a firm support for the drawing board will be obtained. This drawing board (3 is provided at the rear corners thereof with laterally projecting pivot studs 7 which are journaled within bearing plates 8 applied to the sides of the central compartment B at the top thereof and toward the front of the cabinet. \Vhen collapsed, the drawing board 6 swings downwardly into a vertical position at the front of the central oompartment B immediately to the rear of the front doors 1. The bottom of the drawing board 6 may be provided with a drawer 9 which is slidably mounted within suitable guides 10 so as to be movable freely in and out, said drawer providing a convenient container for triangles, squares, pencils, and the like, when the drawing board is in use. suitable latch 11 may be provided for locking the drawer 9 in a closed position when the drawing board is collapsed.
The upper portion of the central compartment B may be provided with shelves 12 upon which books may be placed, the depth of the shelves being less than the width of the cabinet in order to provide the necessary clearance space at the front of the shelves to receive the drawing board 6 and drawer 9 when the drawing board isswung downwardly inito inoperative position; The shelves 12 are shown as adjustablysupported on cross pieces 12 which engage selected notches 12 of upright strips 12. The drawing board does not extend entirely to the bottom of the compartment B, and the space below the lower edge of the drawing board may be provided with drawers 13 within which all of the instruments and tools of the draftsman, such as triangles, squares, pencils, pens, erasers, and the like can be conveniently stored.
The body portion of the drawing board 6 is slightly narrower than the width of the compartment B, and the pivot studs 7 are carried by short lateral arms 6*, so that the drawing board can be swung into horizontal position when the doors 4: areswung outwardly at right angles to the cabinet. When the drawing board 6 is swung upwardly into operative position the two front doors 4 are swung under the edges of the drawing board at the side of the drawer 9, thereby providing a means for firmly supporting the drawing board in an upright position and holding it perfectly level and steady, at the same time providing a free clearance space under the board for the knees of the draftsman. These doors at are shown as provided at the upper edges thereof with suitable latch members such as the bolts 14 for en gagement with sockets or keepers. 15 in the bottom of the drawing board 6 to hold the doors and drawing board securely in operative position when the drawing board is in use.
A slight modification is shown by Fig. 7 in which the pivot studs 7 of-the drawing board are mounted within horizontal slotted bearing plates 16 so as to have a limited back and forth movement. The bottom of the drawingboard 6 is also provided at opposite sides thereof with inverted U-shaped clips 17 which are positioned in such a manner as to just clear the forward edges of the doors 4 when the drawing board is pulled forwardly, but to engage the, doors when the drawing board is shoved rear wardly to the limit of its movement. j The in side arm of each of the clips 17 may each be provided with an inwardly pro ecting finger 18 adapted to enter a recess19 in the door to prevent the drawin board from being swung upwardly above die doors. A latch 20 may be provided at the front of the casing for engagement with the drawing board to prevent the same from being accidentally pulled out when in use. When it is desired to fold the drawing board it is merely necessary to release the latch 20, pull the drawing board forwardly until the clips 17 are disengaged from the doors, swing the doors apart to permit the droppin of the drawing board into thelfront of t e compartment B, and subsequently closing the doors 4.
-Haviug thus described the invention, what 3 I claim as new and desire to secure by ters Patent is 1. A drawing cabinet includinga casing provided with a central compartment having a door opening at the front thereof, a pair of outwardly swinging doors for the door opening, hinges connecting the doors to the edges of the door opening and having a cam construction to lower the doors into engagement with the floor. as they are swung outwardly, and a drawing board hingedwithin the top of the compartment in a plane to the rear of the doors so as to fold downwardly back of the doors when not in use, said drawing board being adapted to be swung upwardly into a horizontal position and supported at the edges thereof by the tops of the outwardly swung doors.
2. A drawing cabinet including a casing provided with a central compartment having a door opening at the front thereof, a pair of outwardly swinging doors hinged to the sides of the door opening, a drawing board having a pivotal and horizontally sliding connection with the top of the compartment at a point to the rear of the doors so as to fold downwardly back of the doors when not in use, said drawing board being adapted to be swung upwardly into a horizontal position andsupported at the ages thereof by the tops'of the outwardly swung doors, and U'shaped clips applied to the bot- Lettom of the drawing board and arranged to straddle the edges of the outwardly swung doors when the drawing board is moved rearwardly. 1
3. A drawing cabinet including a casing provided with a central" compartment having a, door opening at the front thereof, a pair of outwardly swinging doors hingedto the sides of the door opening and provided with recessed portions, a drawing board having a pivotal and horizontal sliding connection with the top of the compartment at a point to the rear of the doors so as to fold downwardly back of the doors when not in use, said drawing board being adapted to be swung upwardly into a horizontal position and supported at the edges jecting fingers adapted to 'enter the'before mentioned recessed portions of the doors to lock the drawing board against upward movement. a
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
