WJD NOAN, a citizen of theUnitedStates, residing in Greenwood, inthecounty of Leflore and State of Mississippi, and 'Jo -IN LEI-mm, a citizen of the 'United States, residing in Greenwood aforesaid, l have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mattress Attachments, of which I the ZEQllOWllig 1s a specification.
Tl 's invent on has for itsprincipal object to provide a mattress with an attachment, I which may be usedw protect thefeet of the occupant of" a, bed fronrdrafts of cold air when arranged atthe foot of the bed, orto protect the headof the, occupant when arranged at the head of the, bed.
Another-object of the invention isgto provide an attachment of the kind referred to,
which may be permanently attached to the mattress, butinsuch way that when set in an upright position to serveas a protector on an'ocf cupied bed, it will besecurely held there and when lowered to a horizontal position on an unoccupied bed, it will be held in place with the fastening devices concealed.
A further object of the invention is to so construct such an attachment that it may be easily applied to or removed from a bed when desired.
In carrying out our invention, we provide what we call a pad of such size that it extends entirely across the bed, and of such height that it will prevent drafts of air from striking the feet of the occupant. The pad is provided with straps or their equivalent, which are attached to the foot end of the mattress and to the pad about midway between is upper and lower ends, by which arrangement the pad, while in upright position, is held firmly against the foot frame of the bed, and when lowered to a horizon tal position on the mattress, the straps will be entirely concealed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of a mat tress with our improvements applied, showing by dotted lines the outlines of the bed frame.
Fig. 2 is a view on an enlarged scale and in section showing how the pad is lowered onto the mattress and how the straps which connect the pad to the mattress are concealed.
I Fig. 3 is:aperspectiveview of a modificati ontin which the straps which attach the pad to :the ma ttresa instead of beingqattached to the upper edgeofthe pad, are connected directly to the middle portion thereof. i I Wehave shownour improvements applied to a mattress A and bed frame B of usual constructioir Thepad at the foot of the bed maybe madeof any suitable material such as ticking stuffed with cotton, and the ticking may be covered with a more ornamental or attractive material if :desired. Short straps N, having buckles a, are permanently securedto the foot of the mattress, preferably being attached directly to a reinforcing strip ekten ding fromiside to side of the mattress, as shown. Straps 0,
extending along j the rearside of the pad fromtop tobottom thereof, are attaohedat 0 to the upper edge of the pad and extend it through loops y formed in a strap P atof the pad at a;
tached to the middle portion of the rear side When the pad is in use asshown in Fig. 1,
it is held by the straps O closely against the foot frame of the bed, but when it is desired to lower the pad as when the bed is unoccupied, it may be done by taking hold of the lower part of the pad and drawing it toward the head-board so that the pad will move to the position shown by dotted. lines with the straps entirely concealed.
If desired a similar pad may be used at the head of the bed as indicated in Fig. 1 and employed as a head protector or as a bolster or sham pillow.
If desired, the pad may be quickly removed from the bed by loosening the straps from the buckles in an obvious way.
While we prefer to connect the straps O to the upper edge of the pad and extend them through loops in a strap extending across the middle portion of the pad as shown in Fig. 1, we may connect the upper ends of the straps to the strap P as indicated in Fig. 3. In either case the straps are connected with the pad at the middle portion thereof in such manner that when the pad is in upright position the straps so hold it that it will not readily move from this position,
inasmuch as it is drawn against the foot may be reversed if desired and the padsentirely conceal the straps. The mattress v operated as before explained.
Inasmuch as the pad at the head of the bed is attached to the mattress in precisely the same way as the pad at the foot of the bed further description of the invention i unnecessary.
It will be observed that the straps O are connected with the middle portion of the rear side of the pad so that the pad may be readily moved to the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1 and as also shown in Fig.2. This could not be done if the straps were connected to the lower edge or end of the pad.
We claim as our invention:
1. The combination with a mattress, of a protecting pad provided with fastening devices connected with the rear or outer side of the pad near the middle portion thereof between its upper and lower ends and connected also with the adj acent end of the mat tress.
. 2..The combination with a mattress, of a protecting pad providedwith straps connected with the rear or outer side of the pad near the middle portion thereof between its upper and lower ends and detachabl-y connected with the adjacent end of the mattress.
3. The combination with a mattress, of a protecting pad provided with straps attached to the pad at its upper edge, and connected with the pad near the middle portion thereof, and means for attaching the free ends of the strap to the mattress.
4:. The combination with a mattress, of at protecting pad, a strap extending across the rear portion of the pad from one side thereof to the other, straps attached to the upper edge of the pad and extending through loops in said first mentioned strap, and means for connecting said vertically arranged straps to the adjacent end of a mattress.
5. The combination with a mattress, of a protecting pad provided with a strap extending horizontally across its rear portion midway between its upper and lower ends, and from side to side on the pad, means for forming loops in the strap, vertically arranged straps attached to the upper edge of said pad and extending through said loops, straps attached to the adjacent end of the mattress, and fastening devices for connecting said last mentioned straps to the vertically arranged straps.
In testimony whereof, we have hereunto subscribed our names.
