  • This invention relates, to brackets and its principal object is to provide a simple, cheap and practical bracket for supporting shelves and other articles. Another object is to provide a selfalining bracket arranged for use on an upright supporting member, having keyhole slots therein, for the reception of a bolt or screw, mounted in the bracket and acting to clamp the bracket upon the up right. To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrn TAUssIe, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brackets, of which the following is declared to be a full, clear, and
exact description.
This invention relates, to brackets and its principal object is to provide a simple, cheap and practical bracket for supporting shelves and other articles. Another object is to provide a selfalining bracket arranged for use on an upright supporting member, having keyhole slots therein, for the reception of a bolt or screw, mounted in the bracket and acting to clamp the bracket upon the up right. Anotherobject is to reduce the parts to a minimum and to reduce the numbe of operatorsrequired to construct brackets of this type. With these and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the several novel features hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.

Figure 1, is a side elevation of an upright supporting member and bracket containing a simple embodiment of the present invention; Fig. 2, is a longitudinal section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 3; Fig. 3, is a rear view of the device; Fig. 4, is a horizontal section taken on line 4-4 of Fig.2, and Fig. 5, is a horizontal section taken on line 5--5 of Fig. 2.
Referring to said drawing the reference character 6, designates an upright supporting member, which for convenience may comprise the usual channel shaped bar formed with key hole slots therein, one of which is shown at 7. The bracket 8, is preferably constructed of sheet metal, struck up by suitable dies, and comprises a horizontal shelf supporting arm 9, and an attaching membe 10, permanently secured to one end of the arm. The attaching member 10, is substantially 'l" shaped in'cross section and preferably comprises a sheet metal piece folded upon itself along the middle of its length to provide a U shaped web 11, 11, and then bent at right angles to the web portion to form oppositely disposed, and alined base portions or flanges 12, 12. Openings 13, 13, are provided in the edge 14, of the web portion into which pro ect two tongues the arm 9. Preferably the tongues 15, fit
snugly between the inner sides of the web pieces 11, and are spot welded thereto to permanently fasten the arm and attaching member together.
Ata point between the tongues 15, the web pieces 11, are pressed outward to leave be tween them an opening through which passes a bolt or screw 16, the head 16 of which is located on the rear side of the attaching member 3'. A nut 17, is threaded on the bolt 16, and is adapted to bear against the adjacent edge of the attaching member.- The bolt is prevented from turning in the hole by a lug 18, which enters the key hole slot and strikes against the straight side thereof. The round portion 19, of the key hole slot is large enough to permit the passage of the bolt head therethrough and the straight portion 20, is made narrower than the bolthead to provide bearing places for said bolt head, when the nut is screwed up against the attaching member. he flanges or base portions are struck up to form two oppositely placed tongues or lugs 21, which are bent back behind the rear faces of the flanges 12, and are arranged to engage the two sides of the round portions 19, of the ke 1 hole slot 7, when the bracket is in place on the upright support ing member, and act to prevent tilting or turning of the bracket on said upright member. Said tongues or lugs 21, also act to correctly position the bracket on the upright member by reason of their engagement with the side edges of the round portion of the keyhole slot.
To secure the bracket on the upright member, the nut 17 is unscrewed far enough to permit the insertion of the bolt head through the round slot. After the bolt head has been passed through the slot the bracket is lowered, thereby bringing the shank of the bolt into the straight portion of the slot, and the two tongues 21, into the round portion thereof. The nut 17, is then tightened up against the front edge of the attaching member, thereby clamping it against the upright.

I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A bracket comprising an arm, an attaohingrnember fixedly secured thereto, and having two oppositely disposed laterally projecting flanges adapted to bear against an upright supporting member, each flange being formed with a struck up tongue extending backof the plane of the rear faces of said flanges, said tongues extending vin opposite directions crosswise of the bracket and being adapted to engage with and rest against side edges of the round portion of a" key hole 'slotinthe upright supporting member. to determine the position of the bracket on said supporting member, a bolt extending through said attaching member and straight portion of said key hole slot, and a nut threaded on said bolt.

4. A bracket comprising an arm formed at one end with two spaced tongues, an attaching member comprising a piece of sheet metal folded upon itself at themiddle along a vertical line, said folding portion straddling the tongues 'ofthe arm and being spot welded thereto, said folded portions having laterally and oppositely bent flange portions, each formed with a rearwardly depressed tongue for positioning the bracket on a supporting member, a clamp bolt extending through said attaching member between the tongues of the arm, and a clampnut 'on said screw, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
