Description

WILLIAM B. SNYDER.
Improvement in'Nasal Douches.
No.-128,257, PatentedJune 25,1812.
Wz'inesses Invenior 1'' UNITED STATES PATENT OFEIoE.
WILLIAM B. SNYDER, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN NASAL DOUCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,257, dated J 11110 25, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. SNYDER, of Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Nasal Douches, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to prevent the passage of particles of hard substances into the nostrils while using the douche, which substances might lodge there and cause inflammation of the membrane or other parts of the nasal organs; and the improvement consists in forming the nozzle of the douche with an enlarged head to receive a piece of sponge or other absorbent material, which filters the solution before it passes into the nose, as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a perspective view of the nozzle so formed, and Fig. 2 a central longitudinal section of the same.
The neck A of the nozzle is provided at one end with an internal screw-thread, a, for securing it to the tube, which connects with the reservoir for holding the solution. The nozzle is also milled on the outer surface around the screw-thread to enable it to be more easily attached. The neck is made of sufficient length to enable it to be easily with therecess or chamber in the nozzle, and is formed with a conical 0r tapering end provided with a discharge-opening, b, which communicates with therecess in the cap. A plate,C, provided with a number of small perforations, is fitted to the interior of the cap and covers the conical part of the recess of the same. Sponge D, or other suitable porous material, is placed in the recess of the neck A, of suitable bulk to fill the chamber formed by screwing the cap 1 on the neck, and, together with the perforated plate 0, serves to intercept any foreign matter which may pass over from the reservoir and prevent them from gaining access to the nose of the patient through the dischargeopening b. By removing the cap the filtering material may be cleansed or renewed, as required; and I have found in the use of my improvement that considerable quantities of foreign matters are intercepted by it.-
I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, as a new article of manufacture A nasal douche having an enlarged head containing a strainer, and a removable section for the insertion of a sponge, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name.
WILLIAM B. SNYDER.
