To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, CHARLES F. RABE- NOLD and GEORGE XV. CARNs, citizens of the United States, residing at Glenside, in the county of Montgomery and State of Penn sylvania, and Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamps, of which the following is a specification. 7

One object of our invention is to provide a single lamp for use on automobiles and. which will take the place of lights as commonly used.

Another object is to include in our improved lamp, an elongated casing to provide,

a general illumination, the construction being such that the light rays reflected therefrom will normally be projected straight ahead of the vehicle and toward the ground.

A further object is to provide an adjustable light-reflecting element which can also be employed as a blind.

A still further object is to so construct our invention that it can be manufactured and sold at a reasonably low cost.

These objects, and other advantageous ends which will be described hereinafter, we obtain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of our improved lamp.

Fig. 4 is a sectional plan View of our invention showing a slight modification of the reflectors.

Referring to Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, 1 is an elongated casing having an opening 2 at the front, closed by a glass 3. This casing is preferably made of sheet metal and has closed end sections 4 and a curved back 5. The top 6 of the casing includes a portion 7 v which slants downwardly in a forward direction and overhangs the bottom 8 of the casing. panying drawings positioned within the length of the casing as illustrated in Fig. l. The electric bulbs 10 as illustrated, are positioned substantially midway between the top 6 and bottom 8 of the casing 1. A reflector 11 is positioned within the casing 1 and has a section 12 located immediately in the rear of the bulbs 10, said section slanting forwardly as clearly shown in Fig. 2.

. Anot-hersection 13 of the reflector 11 is. positioned above the bulbs 10 and at an incline. As illustrated, no portion of the reflector 11 projects below the level of the electric bulbs 10 so that the direct light of the lamps 10 is projected 011 the sections 12 and 13 of the reflector 11 and reflected downwardly.

The reflector 11 extends the full length of the casing 1 (see Fig.3). A plate 14 extends substantially the full length of the casing l and is secured to a rock shaft 15 which is journaled within the casing 1 and has a crank arm 16 at one end thereof to which is connected a rod 17.

The plate 11 serves as a combined light deflector and blind and has a reflecting surface 18 which when movedinto the full line position shown in Fig. 2, serves to deflect the rays of light from the bulbs 10 in a downward directionas shown by the dotted line 19. Furthermore, this reflecting surface 18, when the plate 14 is in the position illustrated in full lines in Fig. 2, serves to reflect downwardly rays of light which firstengage the reflector 11 such for example as illustrated by the dotted lines 20.

I When the plate 14 is moved into the position shown at 21 by dot-and-dash-lines in Fig. 3, it serves as a blind for the light in the upper part of the casing, and there rv reduces the amount of the reflected light and also a part of the direct light from the bulbs 10. The ends 4 of the casing are preferably so that the casbearing and adjusted.

The plate 14 can be moved by actuating I the rod 17, and this rod, if desired, can extend to the interior of the automobile.

In a lamp constructed as above described,

the light can be made to. be projected for wardly and at an angle downwardly toward the ground which is extremely desirable when a lamp is usedon an automobile.

' In Fig. 4, we have illustrated a reflector 11 which is substantially the same 'con struction as the reflector 11 with the exception that it has end portions 23 which flare forwardly from the rear of the casing and therefore give a slight lateral distribution of the light rays. In all other respects the construction shown in Fig. 4: is similar to that above described, and we have therefore given corresponding parts similar reference numerals.

While we have described our invention as taking a particular form, it will be understood that the various partsof our invention may be changed without departing ,from the spiritthereof, and hence we do not limit ourselves to the' preciseconstruction set forth, but consider that we are at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly come within the scope of the appended claims.

we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. Air-elongated lamp casing having an elongated opening in its front, the top and 'the bottom of said casing having portions adjacent said opening which taper forwardly with respect to each other and with the upper surface of the casing slanting forwardly and downwardly, and a source of light within said casingpositioned to the rear of said tapered portion, substantially a reflector within said casing, and a movable plate positioned within said casing and'havmg a portion adapted to be interposed between the top of said reflector and the portion of the casing providing the top of said opening, substantially as described.

3. A lamp casing having an opening in its front, the top of said casing adjacent said opening having a portion slanting downwardly, a source of light within said casing,

a reflector within said casing, and a movable plate positioned within said casing and having a portion adapted to be interposed between the top of said reflector and the portion of the casing providing the top of said opening, said plate having a rear light-refleeting surface for deflecting intercepted rays from the source of light and from said first reflector back to said first reflector and thence out of that portion of the opening in the casing which is located below a horizontal plane including, the bottom of said plate, substantially as described.
