EXHIBITIN G DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 19, 1918.
Application filed .iaima'r 10, 1917. Serial No. 141,642.
Tool-Z whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN H. BREWER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefierson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Exhibiting Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in exhibiting devices and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in connection with automobiles or the like; and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character having novel and improvedmeans whereby the license or number plate may be readily and conveniently displayed.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a device of this'general character having novel and improved means whereby flags orother decoration may be effectively displayed.
The invention has for a further object to provide a novel and improved device of this general character having means whereby the various parts thereof may be readily and effectively adjusted to meet the requirements of practice.
Astill further object of the invention is to provide a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for'use in connection with the radiator of a motordriven vehicle and wherein means is provided for attaching the device to the filler neck or to the radiator proper.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved exhibiting device whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in top plan of an exhibiting device constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Fig. 2' is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a view in front elevation of the device as herein embodied with portions thereof broken away to illustrate'certain details as herein embodied; and
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary detail view partly in longitudinal section and partly in top plan disclosing a slightly modified form of device.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes a flat plate of predetermined dimensions and configuration and provided at substantially its longitudinal center with the forwardly directed arm 2 provided with the longitudinally disposed slot 3. Extend ing upwardly through the opposite ends of the platel are the threaded members 4 which are adapted to pass through the slots 5 disposed longitudinally of the side arms of the substantially U-shaped member 6.
The plate 1 is adapted to be positioned in advance of the filler neck of a radiator while the member 6 is adapted to straddle said neck, whereby it will be perceived that the plate 1 may be effectively applied to and maintained upon the top portion of a radiator. I also find it of advantage to provide the intermediate portion of the member 6 with the upstanding crimp or corrugations- 7 so that the same will readily bridge the upper hingeof the hood of a motor-driven vehicle should the construction of the vehij-- v cle so require. Engaged with the threaded members a are the binding screws 8 where by the member 6 is eflectively clamped.
Disposed through the slot 3 of the arm 2 is the reduced portion or shank 9" of the vertical arm 10, and threaded upon said reduced portion or shank 9 is the clamping nut 11 whereby it will be perceived that the arm 10 may be efl'ectively held at a predetermined point lon itudinally of the arm 2 or more particularly the slot 3 formed therein.
The arm 10 is also provided with the longitudinally directed slot 12 through which is disposed the threaded member 14: which is also directed through the slots 15 formed in the inner end portions of the oppositely directed arms 16. Coacting with the threaded member 14 is the binding nut 17 which serves to maintain the arms 16 in various adjustments longitudinally of the arm 10 and which also serves to maintain the arms 16 in their various adjustments one relative to the other or about the thread- 7 ed member 14. The threaded 'member 14:
is also adapted to'be disposed through a license or number plate P and whereby the same may be effectively supported and displayed.
The outer end portions of the arms 16 have adjustably engaged therewith the eye members 18, said members being maintained in their various adjustments through the medium of the set screws 19. The arms 16 at a point inwardly of the outer ends thereof are also provided with openings 20 into which the po es of the flags or other members to be displayed are adapted to be directed, the poles of flags or other devices being alsodisposed through the openings oftheeye members 18. V Coacting with the openings of the eye members 18 and the openings 20 are the clamping screws 21 which assure an effective attachment of flags or other devices to the members 18 and the arms 16.
'In the event it is impossible to support the devices by the filler neck of the radiator I provide the outer end portion of each of the arms l6 with the longitudinally disposed slot 22 through which is directed the shank 23 carried by the latch or bolt member 24. The bolt members 24 are adapted to be suitably engaged with the radiator. The shank 23 has threaded thereupon the binding nut 25 whereby the bolt or latch 2& may be effectively held against movement relative to the arm 16. r
From the foregoing description, it i thought to be obvious that an exhibiting device constructed in accordance with my inventionis of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of v the convenience and facility with which it .may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without'ma terial departure from the principles and spirit thereof and forthis reason I do not second arm being provided with a thread'edy shank extending through the slot of the first named arm, a clamping member engageable with said shank for holding the second arm at different positions'longitudinally of the slot of the first named arm, oppositely directed arms having their inner end portions overlying the slotted portion of the depending arm, said overlying portions of the oppositely directed arms being also slotted, and a clamping member disposed through the slots of the depending arm and the oppositely directed arms for holding the oppositely directed arms in relativepositions longitudinally of the slot in the depending arm, the outer end portions of said oppositely directed arms being provided with attaching means.
2. A flag holder for automobiles comprising a support adapted to be carried by the radiator of an automobile and to extend in advance thereof, oppositely directed arms carried by the outer'portion of the support, each of said arms inwardly of its outer end being provided with a pole receiving socket, a pole receiving member pivotally engaged with the outer end portion of each of the arms, and means for holding said member against movement about its pivot.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix'my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN H. BREWER.
