HERBERT A. BRAND, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
COMBINED DRINKING-STRAW AND CONTAINER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT A. BRAND, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and use-- ful Improvements in Combined Drinking- Straws and Containers, of which the following is declared to be a full, clear, and exact description. I 10 This invention relates to a combined drinking straw and container, and its prin' cipal object is to provide a tubular container of light, cheap and convenient construction adapted for containingfruit extracts, liq-,
uors, powders, crystals, or other refreshment commodities, and having its ends sealed by detachable closures, which may be readily removed from the tubular portion, the contents emptied into a drinking vessel and diluted with water or other liquid, after ,which it may be consumed through the drinking straw in the usual manner. The
invention consists in the novel features hereinafter fully set forthand claimed. I
The invention is clearly illustratedv in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1, is a side elevation of a combined drinking straw and container, embodying a 1 simple form of the present invention, showing the same inclosed in a thin envelop or wrapper; Fig. 2, is a longitudinal sectlon through the device with the wrapping removed; Fig. 3, is an end view; Fig. 4', is a detail, fragmental, longitudinal section taken at one end thereof; Fig. 5, is a side elevation of the device, showing it in place in a drinking vessel; Fig. 6 is a detail, fragmental, longitudinal section through a slightly modified form of the invention.
Referring to said drawing, and first to Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive, the reference numeral 10,-designates the device as a whole, and 11,
\ a thin paraffin wrapper in which the device maybe inclosed for the purpose of keeping it in a sanitary condition. WVhen paraflin paper is used as a wrapper, the edges and ends thereof may be sealed together by the application of heat and pressure as usual.
The body portion 12, of the device may comprise a tubular stem of small diameter and ofconvenientlength. for use as a drinking straw. It may be constructed of paper tubing, impregnated with parafiin, or' other w non-injurious water proof substance, so as to make it practically lmpervlous to water.

. Application filed March 16, 1916. Serial No. 84,722.
To each end of the tubular stem is detach-- ably secured a closure 13, which, also for the sake of convenience, may be constructed of paper impregnated with paraflin. Preferably the ends of the tubular stem are sealed by uniting the closures thereto by melted from which the ends have been removed.
In use, one end of the tubular stem is first sealed, and then it is filled with a liquid, such as fruit extracts, lemon, orange, etc., or with other palatable, or nourishing liquid, or with a powdered, or crystallized'substance, after which the other end is sealed. The container may then be wrapped in the envelop or cover and the latter sealed..'In this form the device may be packed for shipment, storage and display, and the containeritself is thereby maintained in a clean and sanitary condition, free from the touch of To use the device, the consumer removes the envelop, tears ofii an end piece, inverts the tubular member in a. drink ing vessel, and tears ofi' theother end piece, whereupon the contents discharge into the vessel, and maybe diluted by the addition of water. The tubular member may now be used as an ordinary drinking straw for consuming the contents of the drinking vessel.
*In the modified form illustrated in Fig. 6,
the end of the tubular member 12 issealed with a cap 13*, which is detachably secured to the tubular member by a ring of paraffin 14 in which is' embedded a piece of string, thread, wire or the like 14, the end of which protrudes from the ring of paraffin and may be taken hold of to break the seal.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A combined drinking straw and container, comprising a tubular member, open from end to end, and adapted to contain drinkable material when diluted, the ends of said tubular member being sealed by detachable end members which may be removed to empty the contents, whereby when member by paraffin, said end pieces having so removed the tubular member serves as a projecting tongues, serving as finger holds, 10
drinking straw. said container being adapted to contain a 2.-A combined drinking straw and conliquid which may be discharged by detach- 5 tainer, comprising a tubular member formed ing the end pieces, the detachment whereof of paraffin paper, and open from end to end, converts the container into a drinking straw. and end pieces formed of paraffin paper detachably sealed to the endsof said tubular HERBERT A.
