(look tate of llllllllOiS, have invented a new and useful Portablellllectric Lamp, of which the following is aspecification. The present invention appertains to portable electric lps, and aims to provide a to novel and improved device of that character which can be used as a flash light, lantern, electric torch or candle, and the "like.
It is the object of the invention to provide a combination lam of the nature indicated embodying a nove assemblage of the component elements, whereby the lamp is particularly useful and eficient for various urposes, and may be used in the 'househol ,in barns, garages, .01 the like, and upon vehicles, although it is to be understood that the use of the lamp is not limited.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the inventlon resides in the com- 2t bination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter de-" scribed and claimed, it-being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made withto in the scope of what'is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, there is illustrated-therein, a tubular handle or casing 1, such as is commonly used in portable flfl. movably attached to one end-oi the handle 2 or casing 1 is a head 2, which is enlarged, and provlded with a conical or convexed reflector 3 carrying at its apex or central portion, an electric bulb 4.
Threaded upon the head 2, preferabl upon the larger diametered portion thereo is a'- ring 5 having an outwardly oflset portion or seat 6 in which is seated the inner 70 other suitable material, and which, as illus trated, is of tapered or frusto-conical form. The larger diametered portion of the shell 7 seats against the ring 5, and a substantially conical or dished reflector 8 is disposed within the smaller diametered portion'of the shell 7 and has its rim seating against the corresponding edge of the shell. The reflector 8 has an opening 9 at its apex or central portion, and a lens .10 is seated against the rinr of the reflector .8 across the mouth thereof. A ring or band 11 sur- A rounds the smaller diametered portion of the shell 7 and edges of the reflector 8 and lens 10, and has an inturned flange or lip 12 overlap ing the lens to hold said lens and re ector 8 against the shell 7. A plurality of rods or stays 13 have their outer ends soldered or otherwise secured to the ring 111, and their inner terminals extend slidably through sleeves or apertured members 14 soldered or otherwise secured to the ring 5. Nuts 15 are threaded upon the inner terminals of the rods 13 and bear against the sleeves 14:, whereby when thenuts are tightened, the rings 11 and 5 are drawn toward one another to clamp theshell 7 between the rings,, with the rim of the reflector 8 and edge of the lens 10 clamped between pose of cleaning, repair or replacement, by v unscrewing the nuts 15.
casingl with its head 2 and bulb 4 will provide an electric torch or candle. The circuit of the bulb 1 can be controlled by any suitable switch (not shown) in accordall ance with common practice. When it is desired to use the device as a flashlight, the ring 5 is threaded ontothe head 2 sufficiently to bring the reflector 8 against the reflector 3, as seen in Fig. 2, thereby projecting the bulb 4: through the opening 9 into the reflector 8, and said reflectors being brought together, will close the space be- :tween them, whereby all of the light rays' pass through the lens 10. This will provide a flashlight which can-be used in the manner of ordinary flashlights, the light rays being concentrated by the reflector 8 and lens 10. 'By unscrewing the ring 5 slightly, as seen in Fig. 1, to remove the reflector 8 the desired distance from the reflector 3, the device will now serveas a lantern,since the bulb 4: will be disposed between the apices of the two reflectors and the light can radiate in all directions between the reflectors through the shell 7 a portion of the light rays also passingthrough the opening 9 and lens 10. This provides a desirable lantern, and the light can be controlled by adjusting the reflector 8 to and from the bulb 4. by rotating the ring 5 above the head 2. The device can therefore be readily adjusted for use as an electric torch or candle, a lantern or a flashlight, whichever is desired.
Fig.3 illustrates a simplified construction. The handle or casing 1 ha the ferrule or head 2 provided with the convexed, or substantially conical reflector 3* carrying the bulb 45 at its apex. A. ring 5 is threaded upon the ferrule or head 2 and the trans parent shell 7 seats at one end or edge "against the shoulder of the head 2 surroundlng the reflector 3 The rim of the second reflector 8 seats against the other end' or edge of the shell 7 and the lens 10 seats against the rim of said reflector 8. The reflector 8 has a central opening 9 through which the bulb 4 projects partially. A ring 11? fitted upon the outer end portion of the shell 7 has a flange or lip'12 inturned to overlap the lens 10*, and a plurality of rods or stays 16 are soldered or otherwise secured to the rings 5* and 11. When the ring 5 is threaded upon the head or ferrule 2*, thi brings the shell 7* against said head, to clamp the shell between'the head 2 and ring 11. Whenthe ring 5 and corresponding parts are removed from the head 2, the device serves as an electric torch or candle, and when said parts are applied, the device serves'as a lantern; A. flexible cover or band 16 of leather, cloth, or other suitable material, can be wrapped around the shell 7* to inclose the reflectors, the overlapped ends of said cover being detachably connected by means of snap fasteners 17, whereby the light rays can only pass through the lens 10, to serve as a flashlight.
' The device as shown iii-Fig. 5 is of the lantern type, having the casing or body 1 provided with the removable bottom or cover 1 to enable the battery to be placed within and removed from the casing 1'. The casing is provided at its upper surface with a boss or raised portion 2 having the substantially conical reflector 3 upstanding therefrom and carrying the electric bulb 4: at its apex. The transparent shell 7*" is provided at its inner end with a contracted threaded portion 5 to screw onto the threads of the boss 2 whereby to removably attach said-shell to the casing or body, and the cap 10 of the lantern is provided with threads to screw into the outer contracted threaded end of the shell 7. The cap 10 has a depending 'conic'al. reflcctor'S projecting to ward and adjacent to the bulb 4", whereby thetwo reflectors which project toward one another with the bulb-therebetween to reflect the light to an sides. The simple form of the invention-shown in Fig. 9 embodies the rings'fi and 11 connected by stays 13 and havin a transparent shell 7 therebetween, t is ring 5 holding a disk-shaped reflector 3 having'a central bulb P, and the ring 11? holding a lens 10.
