ALBERT E. HOLMBERG AND ERIC SANDELIUS, OF CADILLAC, MICHIGAN.
INDIVIDUAL TABLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 20, 1917.
Application filed February 26 1917. Serial No. 151,041.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ALBERT E. HOLM- BERG, a citizen of the United States, and Ears SANDELIUS, a subject of King Gustaf V of Sweden, residing at Cadillac, in the county of Nexford, State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Individual Table, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to an individual table, and aims to provide a novel and improved device of that character attachable to a chair or similar support and serving as an individual dining table for the person occupying the chair.
It is the object of the invention to provide an individual table of the nature indicated embodying a novel construction and combination of the component elements, whereby to enhance the utility and efficiency of the device, the same also being simple and inexpensive in construction.
Another object of the invention is the provision of novel means for mounting the table top whereby it can be swung to one side out of the way when not in use, and when swung into operative position will be held there.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the table, portions being broken away.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the clamp, portions being shown in elevation.
The table embodies a top or plate 1 of elliptical or other suitable contour and constructed of wood or other suitable material. Secured to the edge of the top 1 and extending from one end of the top to the other is an upstanding flange 2, arranged to be disposed opposite to the person using the table, to prevent the dishes and other articles from slipping off of the table.
The table top is supported by an angular or inverted L-shaped bracket 3 having the vertical standard 4; and the horizontal arm 5 upon which the top 1 is secured by means of bolts 6 or otherwise.
A clamp is used for supporting the bracket 3 from the seat of a chair, and this clamp embodies an upright body or supporting member 7 having the upper jaw 8 extending from its upper end at an acute angle, and an arm 9 extends from the lower end of the member 7 at an obtuse angle. A clamping screw 10 is threaded upwardly through the arm 9 and has a jaw 11 swiveled upon the upper end thereof, the lower end of the screw 10 having a suitable thumb piece 12. The jaw 8 is adapted to rest upon the seat of the chair or other supporting member, and by screwing the screw 10 upwardly, the clamp will be held firmly by the chair seat or the like, with the member 7 in a slightly inclined position, with its upper end tilted away from the chair. The member 7 has alongitudinal upwardly opening socket or recess 13 in which the lower terminal of the standard 4: is fitted rotatably, and the member 7 is provided with a notch 1-1 at its upper end extending from the upper end of the socket 18. The standard 4 has an outstanding lug 15 seatable in the notch 14 when the table top 1 is in position above the forward edge of the chair seat.
When the table is not in use, by raising the bracket 3 and top 1, to remove the lug 15 from the notch or seat 14:, and turning the bracket 3 slightly, the lug 13 will seat on the upper end of the member 7, and due to the slightly inclined position of the bracket 3,
said bracket will turn, thereby swinging the top 1 away from the chair toward one side out of the way. Then when a person is seated in the chair, by swinging the top toward the occupant, the lug 15 will drop into the notch 14 when the top 1 is brought into proper position, the bracket 3 also dropping slightly, and this will lock the top in position, to prevent accidental movement thereof, unless the top and bracket are raised as above described. The device can 'be readily removed and applied to various of said socket, a bracket having its lower gravity to remove the table top from over end seated rotatably in said socket, a table the chair seat. top carried by the bracket at one side In testimony that we claim the foregoing thereof, and a lug carried by the bracket to as our own, we have hereto affixe'd our sig- 5 drop into said notch When the bracket is in nature's in the presence of two Witnesses. 15
one position with the table top over the ALBERT E. HOLMBERG. chair seat, said bracket being inclined away ERIC SANDELIUS. from the chair seat, so that when the bracket -Witnesses: is lifted and turned to remove the lug from a A. N. PENNY, 10 said notch, the bracket will swing by E. M. GUSTAFSON.
