TRAY ATTACHMENT Foie, BEDsTEADs.
Specification of Letters Patent. Pwhm-ggd Tully jm), 193'?! Application led May 15, 1916. Serial No. 97,718.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, LUTHER E. BERKEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of Bronx, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tray Attachments for Bedsteads; and I do hereby' declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to whichl it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention is directed to improvements in tray attachments for bedsteads, and has for its object to so construct a device of this character that it can be easily and quickly attached to either side rail ofthe bedstead.
A further object of the invention yis to provide a device of this character so constructed that the tray can be moved from its operative position to its inoperative position, when desired. l
A still further object of the invention is to provide a tray which can be adjusted vertically and is capable of being swung to a position to suit the comfort ofthe occupant of the bed.
With these and other objects in view, thi invention resides in the novel means of construction, formation and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described,
claimed and illustrated'l in ing drawing, in which':-. j
Figure 1 isa side elevation of the device. Fig. 2 isa vertical sectional view through the device.
the accompany- 3 is a sectional` view on line 3-3 ofl Fig. 4 is a vertical central sectional view inoperable position.
Fifg. 5 is a Fig.1. j i y ('Tlig. 6 -isa detail perspective ,view of the The device consists of' a tube 1, having its lower end terminating in a lbracket 2, having engaged therewith a clampingscrew 3 which is adapted to engage one o the side rails 44 of the bed. Carried by the vbracket is a .through the device showing the tray in its sectional view on line 5-'5 of plate v5 which also engages the'rail 4 and serves in conjunction." with the bracket 2 to hold the tube 1 clamped in avertical position` to the bed rail.-` l
. tray in a vertical position;
Engaged in theftube 1 is. a stem 6, said stem being held in adjusted positions by the set screw 7 which is carried by the tube 1. The -upper end of the stem 6 terminates in a disk 8, said disk having carried by its upper surface a dove-tailed rib 9, one end of which projects beyond the periphery of the disk, and is provided with a perforation 10, the purpose of which will appear later.
The tray 11 may be of any suitable shapev and has its under surface provided with a dove-tailed groove l2,V one end of which opens into the recess 13, and projecting into the recess is a stud 14.
Associated with the disk 8 is a set screw which passes through the rib 9 and is adapted to engage the base of the groove 12 so that the tray 11 can be held in adjusted positions; l
Since the groove 12 yis slidably engaged with the rib 9 it is obviousthat when it is desired to move the tray toa vertical position that the same is slid to the right, as shown in Fig. 1, until the rib 9 is disengaged from the groove 12, after which the trayr can be positioned vertically' so -that the stud 14 will engage the perforation 10, as clearly shown in Fig. 4 of the drawing.
What is claimed isz- A device of the class `described comprising a tube, means for detachably connecting said tube to asupport, a stem adjustably 4connected to saidtube and having a disk carried by its upper end, a rib carried bythe upper lsurface of said disk and having a perforation in one end, a tray having a groove formed therein and slidably interlocked with said rib, said groove having one of its ends opening into a recess formed in said tray and its other endv opening out upon the opposite edge of said tray,- a stud carried by said tray and extending into said recess and adapted to engage inthe perforation in said rib whereb a wall of said recess will engage said ri and support the ico In testimony whereof, I ax'my signature, 'in the presence of two witnesses.
