To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD M. CRAIG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Charleston, in the county of Kanawha and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Screens, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to an improved window screen and has for its primary object to provide simple and serviceable means for screening the. entire window opening, which may be readily made and applied in position without requiring the services of a skilled mechanic.

It is another and more particular objec of the invention to provide a screen for the above purpose embodying a rectangular frame, the opening of which is entirely covered with a reticulated fabric, and suitable means for removably securing the screen frame in place exteriorly of the window sashes so that said sashes may be freely moved to their open or closed positions.

It is also a further general object of my invention to improve and simplify devices of the above character whereby the same are rendered very serviceable and convenient in practical use and capable of manufacture at relatively small cost.

With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to-be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,

In Fig. 1 of the drawings, I have shown the two screen sections 13 each occupying one-half of the frame opening, connected by a horizontal hinge. joint 14. Each of these sections of the screen is adapted to be connected along its vertical edges by means of detachable fastenings 15 to the frame of the window. Upon the window sill, a suitable catch member, indicated at 16, is mounted to Specification of Letters Patent.

operatively engage the lower edge of the lower screen section 13 and hold the same in its closed position.

Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings illustrate a mountlng and arrangement of a plurality of relatively movable screen sections, and I have herein shown two upper screen sectlons 17 each occupying one-quarter of the frame A fitting within the window opening and mounted upon suitable horizontal pivots indicated at 18, for vertical swinging or turning movement. The lower half of the frame A is adapted to be closed by two screen sections 19, each of which is ivoted or hmgedly mounted at one of its e ges, as at 20, for horizontal swinging movement. These several screen .sections are likewise provided with suitable latches, whereby they may be conveniently held in closed position. The pivots 18 and 20 are preferably of such construction as to permit of the easy and quick removal of any one or more of the screen sections. It is preferred that each of the pivots 18 cooperate with a vertical member of the frame A as particularly illustrated in Fig. 7 and wherem the pivot 18 is engaged with the upwardly inclined openend groove 21. Pivotally engaged with said vertical member of the frame A above the slot 21 is the dog 22 adapted to engage the upper portion of the pivot 18 and thereby efi'ectively maintain the same in applied position within the groove 21. It is also preferred that the dog 22 be provided with an extension 23 adapted to contact with the tially entirely across the groove 21 when the dog 22 is engaged with the ivot 18. The frame A is adapted to be loc ed within the window opening in any "desired manner as indicated at.24. This latter form of the device is especially. desirable for. household use as it will permit an awning cord or ropebeing readily reached from the interior of the house by simply swinging any one of the screen sections to open position, thus avoiding the necessity of removing the entire frame.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawpivot 18 and of a length to extend substanings, the construction, manner of operation anged in place within the window frame by one of ordinary skill. Thescreens can, of course, be constructed 1n varlous s1zes and the screen fabr1c may be of any desired mesh. Where the screenis to be employed for purposes of safety, it is to vbe understood that'the. screen or grading will be of relatively heavy material and a greater number of the fastening elements may be provided. The invention is also susceptible of many other obvious modifications in; the form, proportion and arrangement of its several parts and I, therefore, reserve the privilege of ado ting all such legitimate changes as may the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed. v

Having thus fully described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is 1.
