BED ATTACHMENT;

ALG OTH TE. ANDERSON, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
BED ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 17, 1917.
Application filed January 28, 1914. Serial N 0. 814,862.
To all whom it may concern: I 1
Be it known that I, ALGOTH E. ANDER- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in table attachments for beds, and has for its principal object to provide a bed, the frame of which may be used to support a table should the user so desire.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a simple and effective device which may be quickly attached or detached from a bed Without causing undue inconvenience to the user.
A further object of the invention is to provide a simple and effective bed table which may be easily and cheaply constructed and by which the above objects may be attained.
With the above'and other objects in View, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an end elevation of a bed table showing the same as it would appear when applied and also showing a portion of the frame of the bed in section,
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional View of Fig. 1 taken on the plane of line 22,
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional View taken on line 33 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view on line 44 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the socket which is used in conjunction with this attachment when the device is used on wooden beds.
Referring now to the drawings by characters of reference, the numeral 1 designates the side rail of a bed having formed thereon a suitable lateral extension 2 which is provided with the longitudinal apertures 3, the use of which will appear as the description proceeds.
The numeral. 4 designates a standard which is provided at its lower end with the taken extension 5 having at its upper terminal the annular collar 6 which forms a stop for the standard becoming displaced. A suitable hexagonal extension 7 which is preferably rectangular in cross section,'is formed integral with the upper-end of the standard 4, and extends at substantially right angles with relation thereto. It will be clearly seen that when the table is in place, the extension 5 formed on the standard 4, projects into the aperture 3 formed in the portion2 of the rail 1 and holds the standard in an upright position as illustrated in Fig. -1.
The table which is designated asan entirety by the numeral 8, preferably comprises the top 9'having riveted or otherwise secured as at 10, the support 11 which is provided at one end with the extension 12 having formed at its free end the sleeve 13. This sleeve 13 is preferably provided with a hexagonal recess 14 which extends longitudinally-with relation to the'sleeve and is adapted to receive the extension 7 formed on the standard 4. A suitable set screw 15 is threaded into the sleeve 13 at the desired point and is so arranged as to frictionally engage the extension 7 to hold the table 8 from displacement. Should it be desired, it is to be understood that a bead or ridge may be secured to the edges of the table top to prevent any article which might be resting thereon from slipping from the edge.
In the modified form of the invention which is illustrated in Fig. 5, the body portion 2 which is provided with the longitudinal aperture3has formed integral therewith the laterally extending flanges 18 having formed therein the screw receiving apertures 19 by means of which the device is adapted to be secured to the side rail of a wooden bedstead should it be desirable to use the table on that type of bed. i
It will be clearly seen that when the device is in use, the extension 5 isplaced within the aperture 3 in the portion 2 of the rail 1 and the standard'4 will project upwardly as illustrated in "Fig. 1. The sleeve 13 is then slipped over the squared extension 7 and the set screw tightened. Thus it will be seen that the table 8 will be supported in place at substantially right angles to the vertical standard 4. Owing to the fact that the extension 5 is cylindrical, it will be evident that the table may and prevents the same from be swung around to the desired position and may be adjusted to the proper relation to the user.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that such changes may be made in the combination and arrangement of parts as will fall within the scope and spirit of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
lhe combination with a horizontal bed rail having vertical and horizontal flanges and provided at its horizontal flange with an exterior outwardly projecting lug extending from the lower edge to the upper face of the bed rail and having a vertical opening, a vertical standard journaled in the opening and provided with a stop 'collar arranged upon the upper face of the lug at the top of the bed rail, an integral horizontal arm extending inwardly from the Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents upper end of the standard and provided with a relatively long polygonal portion, a table top located above the bed, a straight horizontal bar consisting of a flat inner attaching portion rigidly secured to the lower face of the table top and a relatively long outer tubular portion having a polygonal bore conforming to the configuration of the relatively long polygonal portion of the said arm and receiving the same, the polygonal portion of the arm and the tubular portion of the said bar permitting inward and outward adjustment of the table top and the standard permitting rotary movement of the table top and means for securing the bar in its adjustment on the arm.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
