Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented 0a. 10, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ALBERT E. KIROHER and HENRY C. Doson, citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Filing-Cabinets; and We do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention is a filing cabinet wherein the material contained in the receptacle portion of the cabinet may be elevated as the receptacle is drawn from its casing, such elevation being eifected when the receptacle or drawer is drawn outwardly to nearly its fullest extent to facilitate handling of the various files or cards within the cabinet, as well as permitting the contents of the receptacle to be more easily viewed than with the filing cabinets in which the contents are maintained in the same plane as the casing.
The invention embodies also novel means for retaining the material in elevated or lowered positions, such means being automatic in action and also manually controlled.
Other novel features and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the appended claims.
While a preferred embodiment of the 111- vention is disclosed in the accompanying drawings, it is to be understood that the construction therein shown is for the purpose of illustration only, and not as defining the limits of the invention.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view through the receptacle showing the elevated position of the bottom member in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View through the casing of the receptacle. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the receptacle. Fig. 4: is a transverse sectional view through the casing. Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view disclosing spring actuated and manually controlled means for locking the movable member of the receptacle. Fig. 6 is an enlarged sectional view of the bottom member mounted within its receptacle. Fig. 7 is another detail view disclosing one means of pivotally mounting the bottom in the receptacle. Fig. 8 is a detail view of an antifriction bearing member.
The filing cabinet may be of any preferred materlal or form, but as disclosed in the drawmgs is an ordinary cabinet to receive cards or files when positioned in vertical order. The outer casing is indicated at 1 in Fig. 2 and is shown provided with an internal guideway 2 which may be positioned parallel with the base of the casing 1. It is preferred to have a plurality of these guideways, one in each side wall. The guideway may be inclined from the rear portion of the casing upwardly terminating at the forward portion thereof, but in the drawings this guideway is shown provided with an abruptly inclined portion as at 3 near the front of the casing, and thence terminating in a horizontal portion 4 opening out of the casmg.
The receptacle member or drawer of the casing is illustrated in Fig. 1 and is shown provided with a front member 5, a rear member 6, a base member 7 and a movable bottom member 8. The base member 7, however, may be omitted if desired. The bottom member 8 may be provided with the usual follower block 9. The bottom member is shown in Fig. 6 as of less thickness at the end 10 to perniit of movement of the bottom member with relation to the end member 5. To effect a pivotal movement of said bottom member 8, suitable means may be passed through the side walls or ends of the receptacle to engage the end 10 of the bottom member 8 One form of such means is disclosed in Fig. 7 as an ordinary screw 11 having a threaded portion 12 to maintain the screw in position and a non-threaded portion 13 which serves as a pintle for the pivotal movement of the bottom member 8. It is preferred to employ one of the screws 11 on each side of the receptacle to engage the end 10 of the bottom member 8. At the rearward portion, the bottomS is provided with pintles 14 on eachside, which may be provided with an antifriction roller 15 which is adapted to ride in the guideway 2 of the casing 1. As the receptacle is drawn from its casing, the roller pintles 14 will ride in the guideway .2 permitting the bottom member to. remain in the plane of the receptacle and easing until the receptacle is drawn nearly out of its casing, when the pintles will ride on the inclined portion 3 of the guideway which serves to elevate the rear portion of the bottom member and present the contents of the receptacle to better view of the operator, as well as facilitating the handling of the contents. This forward movement of the receptacle can be effected until the pintles arrive at the hori- Zontal portion 4.
When it is desired to maintain the bottom member in its inclined and elevated position, and at the same time draw the receptacle from its casing, there is provided suitable retaining means, such as the catches 16, which are adapted to engage suitable apertures in the side walls 17 of the receptacle. These catches may be in the form of spring actuated plungers, or any other desired form, and if desired, the cabinet may be provided with manually controlled means to retract the plungers 16 when it is desired to lower the bottom member of the receptacle. Any form of manually controlled retracting device may be employed, but in Fig. 5 one form is illustrated wherein a plunger rod 17 is mounted on the base member 8, one end 18 of the rod to engage a suitable central member 19 with which engages links 20 secured to the spring actuated plunger 16. The other end of the rod 17 is provided with a button 21 positioned exteriorly at the end 5 of the receptacle. By moving the rod 17 inwardly, by means of the button 21, the links 20 will be actuated to retract both of the plunger rods 16 and thereby release the bottom member from its elevated position.
While various changes and alterations may be made in the form and proportion of parts and in the details of the parts, such as in the spring actuated catches or in the form of the guideway, the right is reserved to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a filing cabinet, a casing having a longitudinal guideway provided with an upwardly directed portion, a slidable receptacle having a pivoted bottom member and means carried by the bottom member to ride in the guideway and lift said member.
2. In a filing cabinet, a casing having longitudinal guideway slots in the lower portion of the side walls thereof, said slots terminating at one end of the casing in an upwardly directed portion, a receptacle provided with vertically directed slots and having a bottom capable of vertical movement, and means on said bottom member to extend through and ride in said receptacle slots and to engage the slots of the casing to actuate the bottom member when the receptacle is moved to predetermined positions.
3. In a filing cabinet, a casing having a guideway with an upwardly and outwardly directed portion at the front thereof, a slid able receptacle provided with a vertically movable bottom member and pintles extending from the sides of the bottom member to engage the guideway to elevate the bottom member when the receptacle is moved to a predetermined forward position.
In a filing cabinet, a casing having a guideway with an upwardly directed portion near one end thereof, a receptacle movable within the casing and provided with a vertically moving bottom member, and an antifriction device carried by the bottom member to ride within the guideway for the purpose of elevating the bottom mem ber when the receptacle is moved to a predetermined position within the casing.
5. In a filing cabinet, a casing havinga guideway with an upwardly directed portion, a slidable receptacle having a pivoted bottom member, means carried by the bottom member to engage the guideway and elevate said member when said means engage the upwardly directed portion, spring actuated means to retain the bottom member in its elevated position, and means to control said spring actuated means.
6. In a filing cabinet, a casing having a guideway provided with an upwardly directed portion, a slidable receptacle adapted to be positioned therein, said receptacle having a bottom member pivotally secured near one end, means rigid with said bottom member and extending from the sides thereof to elevate said bottom member when the receptacle is moved to a predetermined position to have its lifting means engage the upwardly directed portion of the guideway, and a plurality of spring-actuated oppositely positioned plungers to retain the bottom member in various positions with relation to the receptacle.
7. In a filing cabinet, a casing having a longitudinal guideway formed in the sides thereof near the base and terminating in an upwardly and forwardly directed portion, a slidable receptacle for said casing pro vided with a pivoted bottom member, the end of said slidable receptacle being recessed to receive an end of the bottom member, said end of said bottom member which is adapted to fit in the recess having its upper and lower faces cut at an angle to the plane of the remaining portion of said member, means to pivotally mount said end of the member to the casing, and a plurality of pintles near the opposite end of said bottom member extending from the sides thereof to engage the guideway of the casing for the purpose of lifting the bottom member when the receptacle is moved to a predetermined position within the casing.
8. In a filing'cabinet, a casing having a guideway with an upwardly directed portion, a receptacle slidably mounted therein and having a pivoted bottom member, means carried by the bottom member to engage the guideway to lift said member when the receptacle is moved to a predetermined position in the casing to have said means engage the upwardly d irected portion, and a plurality of spring-actuated plungers mounted on opposite sides of said bottom member, said plungers being connected by 10 In testimony whereof, we atfix our signa- 15 tures.
