JEWELERS IRLIERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 21, 1916.
Application filed April 28, 1915. Serial No. 28,442.
To all whom it may concern:
' the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a jewelers tool,
and more particularly to the class of jewelry pliers.
The primary object of the invention is the provislon ofpliers of this character wherein rings can be firmly clamped for the polishing of the same on a lathe both inside and outside thereof, and also other articles'of jewelry may be held for the polishing of the same.
Another object of the invention is the provision of pliers of this character wherein different sizes of rings can be firmly held, the pliers being novel in construction to permit theconvenient handling thereof for the polishing of the jewelry when held thereby.
A further object of the invention is the provision of pliers of this character which are simple in construction, reliable and eflicient in its purpose, and inexpensive in manufacture.
' With these and other objects in View, the invention consists in the construction, cornbination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in a the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of the pliers constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is an edge elevation.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the pliers comprises a pair of similarly constructed members 5 and 6, respectively, which are swingingly connected to each other through the mediumofa pivot 7 passed through pivot ears 8 formed on the member 6 and also passed through the member 5 as shown. These members 5 and 6 are formed with jaw extremities 9 and 10, respectively, while formed on the jaws 10 are gripping surfaces 11 for firmly holding jewelry cuff links, 7 stick pins, or other small when the said jaws 10 are closed, while the jaws 9 are formed with external notches 12 providing which are to be firmly clamped thereon, the jaws 9 being outwardly tapered to permit the opening and closing of the members.
Mounted in the jaws 10 are the limbs 13 of a tension spring 14 which serves to normally hold the jaws 9 spread apart and the jaws 10 closed.
Formed in the inner meeting edges of the connecting the same are notches 15 which are of different sizes relative to the companion pairs thereof, the notches being semicircular in form and are formed with channels or grooves 16 providing seats for finger rings so that the lattercan be firmly clamped therein to permit the polishing on the inside by the ordinary jewelers lathe.
en the finger rings aremounted upon the j ws 9 concentrically about the same the saidrings can be polished on the outside thereof by the lathe as will be clearly apparent. I
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction and manner of operation of the device will be clearly understood, and therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted.
What is claimed is seats for finger rings members 5 and 6 at one side of the pivot 7 In pliers of the class described, a pair of members pivotally connected together intermediate their ends and having reversely tapered jaw terminals, frictional gripping sections mounted in the inner faces of a pair of the jaw terminals, the said jaw terminals being provided with external and internal opposed notches, respectively, the walls of the said internal notches being formed with seats, and an expanding spring connected with the members to hold one pair of jaw terminals separated and the other pair closed, the internal notches being of difit'erent sizes.
In testimony whereof I in presence of two witnesses.
IRA AUSTIN SANDERS.
Witnesses:
Gno. C. BISHOP, C. J. HOWERTON.
