Description

W. L. DEMING.
GARMENT SUPPORTER.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 13. 1913.
Patented Sept. 7, 1915.
COLUMBIA PLANDGRAPH c Winn-Alvin- D MI LQFSAL M, OHIO- awareness-rename;
. To all whom itmay concern." 7
Be it; known that I, WILLIAM L. Dn ive, a" citizen of" the {United Staten-residing at f Salem, in the county of Columbiana "and" State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvementin Garment-Supporters, of which the following is a full,
clear, and exact description, reference being. had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relatesto devices for temporarily fastening one garment to another;
.for example, attaching the stocking to underwear to support the stocking and hold down the underwear. j
The invention consists of a clampmade of a single piece of metal bent on itself into peculiar form and adapted to grip the two fabrics which it is desired to hold together.
The peculiar form intowhich the device is bent allows it to. be easily put in place and easily removed, but, when it is in place, it effectively holds the fabrics together.
The invention is hereinafter more fully described in connection with the drawings hereof. I 1
.In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view of my holding clip Fig. 2 is a view showing the same in place holding a stocking onto underwear; Fig. 3 is a vertical section on an enlarged scale through the .clip and the gripped fabrics shown in Fig. 2.
Referring to Fig. 1, my clip, will be seen to consist of a single piece of bent metal, preferably round wire. Such wire is bent on itself to produce a concave intermediate or head portion 1, two rounded shoulders 2 at the ends of the intermediate portion, then inwardly projecting portions 8, and then longitudinal portions 4 which-extend from the portions 3 at an angle thereto and prefinwardly, that is, toward the ends 7, 7,
for purposes hereinafter explained.
I In Figs. 2 and 3, A indicates the underwear and B the stocking. In putting the Specification of Lettersilatent.
clip in place, a doubledportionof the stockand underwear is pinched together with "thefingers into *aloop, as shown atG in- Fig."-3,' and then the clip is shoved onto such doubled portion so that the tines 6 lie on opposite sides thereof, and, by the resilience of the clip, clamp such parts together. In this shoving action, the rounded portion of the clip where the return bends 5 join, thetines 6 form a flaring mouth enabling the device to be put easily in place. It is shoved into place by pressure on the intermediate concave portion 1, the concavity of this portion centering the operators thumb on it and allowing it to be easily shoved home. In this movement, the converging shoulders 3 allow the clip to be grasped at the same time by the operators first and second finger, so thatthe clip may beconveniently picked up and inserted by one hand while the other hand holds the pinched fabric;
When the supporter is in position the parallel members 6 embrace a looped rib formed in the hose and underwear. This looped rib is spread by the curved intermediate portion of the supporter 1, substantially into a Y, thereby bringing a portion of the hose and underwear opposite each of the ends 7, the fabric extending into the space beyond those ends. This normally prevents inadvertent removal of the supporter, but the ends 7 being rounded and flared apart as shown,- may be pulled over these raised portions raeenteuse e. "2,1915. ApplicationfiledSeptember 13, 4,913. Seria1lo:789,583l' Y v without danger of catching in or tearing the I garments, when it is desired to remove the supporter. Accordingly my clip effectively binds the stocking and underwear, or other garments which are secured by it.
The device is small and lies close to the garment, so that it is out of the way and unobservable. To remove it, it is simply pulled backwardly, the inwardly bent portions 3 of the clip forming grips for two fingers to pull the clip out of place, and the flared ends 7 sliding easily over the folded or raised portions of the stocking. The clip is thus operated in either direction by the thumb bearing against the bent portion 1 and the first and second; fingers against the shoulders 3.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
A garment fastener made of a single piece of spring-metal bent on itself to provide the intermediate portion; two rounded shoulders terminating within. the space provided by adjacent thereto, two inwardly bent porthe inwardly bent portions and the intertions .1eading from the respective rounded mediate portion, as described. r. shoulders, two longitudinal portions leadv In testimony whereof, I hereunto afiix my 5 ingaway from the inwardly bent portions; signature in the presence of two witnesses. 15
