JAMES KEITH AND DAVID BALFOUR BAIN, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
APPARATUS FOR HEATING OR COOLING AIR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 3, 1915.
Application filed March 5, 1914. Serial-No. 822,670.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMES KEITH and I)AVID B'ALFOLR BAlN, subjects of the King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, and residents of London, England, have invented a certain new and use-. ful Improvement in Apparatus for Heating or Cooling Air, of which the following is a specification. This invention relates to tubular apparatus for heating or cooling air for ventilating or the like, said apparatus comprising a casing containing inclined heat exchanging elements, over which a current of 7 air is caused to pass by means of a fan.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 and 2 are vertical sections showing alternative forms of apparatus embodying the present invention applicable mainly for heating or cooling and ventilating the cabins of ships.
The same reference characters denote similar parts in the several views.
As shown, the apparatus employed. comprises amain casing A situated above and communicating with a fan casing. The said main casing A, which is of approximately cylindrical formation, is fitted with an annular header H carryinginclined upwardly extending heat exchanging U tubes G around which travels the current of air entering through an inlet covered by a protecting "cowl F Situated below the header in the under part of the casing is a centrifugal fan runner D mounted on a vertical shaft driven by a motor E below, the air being delivered downwardly from the fan casinginto the duct C.
It will be understood that the U-tubes constituting the heat exchanger inclose a hollow space in which is fitted a baflle device K.
The modification represented at Fig. 2
in intersecting the surface of the hyperboloid of revolution containing the tubes.
In both cases the tubes are disposed at an inclination in relation to the direction of flow of the air to be heated, whereby the condensed vapor is caused to -flow down ward so as to leave comparatively dry the surface of the tubes directly acted upon by the air in its passage, thereby greatly increasing the efliciency of the apparatus. \Ve claim Apparatus for heating or cooling air, comprising, in combination, a main casing, a fan casing in communication with said main casing, a centrifugal fan runner mounted to rotate in said fan casing and adapted to produce a current of air through said main casing, aheat exchanger comprising U-tubes contained in the surface of a hyperboloid of revolution and inclosin a hollow space, and a battle device in said ollow space, said U-tubes exposed to repeated impact by the air current, each tube disposed at an inclination to the horizontal, and at an inclination to the direction of flow of' the air propelled by said fan, as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of twosubscribing witnesses.
7 JAMES KEITH.
'DAVID BALFOUR BAIN.
