LANTERN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 6, 1915.
Application filed January 4, 1915. Serial No. 343.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK LAszczAK, subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Kewanee, in the county of Henry and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lanterns, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in lanterns.
The primary object of this invention is to provide a lantern adapted for holding a light giving member completely protected from without, but affording a guarded entrance for air as well as an escape means for the products of combustion.
A further object is to provide a glass sided lantern frame having one side hinged for forming a door and adapted to contain a lamp or a candle while an adequate ventilating and circulating means is. provided therefor.
lVith these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and set forth in the appended claim.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like-designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a vertical transverse central sectional view through the device. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof with the upper portion shown insection upon line IIII of Fig. 1 and Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken upon line III-III of Fig. 1.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, it will be seen that a lantern casing is provided having a top 10 and bottom 11 and four sides, each consisting of a rectangular frame 12 with a glass panel 13 mounted therein, while one of said sides such as 14 is hinged as at 15 to the adjacent side and thereby providing a swinging door for the lantern.
While any convenient form of light-giving member may be positioned within the lantern casing, the same is especially adapted for holding a candle such as 16, the same being firmly seated within a collar 17 secured centrally to the inner face of the lantern bottom 11.
A central opening 18 is provided in the.
The casing bottom 11 is provided with air inlets 30, and tubes 31 are secured over the same and within the lantern casing. The said tubes 31 have closed upper ends 32 while they are provided with a plurality of perforations 33 adjacent their lower ends and through which the air is admitted to the casing while downwardly curved deflecting plates 34 are carried by the outer sides of the tubes directly above the perforations 33 thereof. It will be noted that by reason of the perforations 33 being adjacent the lower ends of the tubes 31, air spaces are formed so that a sudden blast of air entering the inlets 30 will be cushioned and thus prevented from blowing quickly through the perforations 33. i
It will be seen that'the four corner posts 35 which form parts of the side wall casings are extended downwardly through the casing bottom and with their projecting ends 36 providing legs for the lantern, supporting pins 37 being positioned through the legs in contact with the lower surfaces of the bottom. In a similar manner, the upper ends of the posts 35 are made cylindrical in form as at 38 which cylindrical portions are extended through the casing top 10, While the top is retained thereon by means of cross pins 39 extending through such cylindrical ends 38.
From this detail description of the drawings, it will be seen that a serviceable device is provided which will protect the candle or lamp within the casing, but will allow an unobstructed path of travel for the rays of light emanating therefrom while at the same time having specially adapted eflicient means for affording the best possible combustion for the lantern. It will also be seen that a bail 40 is hinged to the casing top 10 by means of which the lantern may be carried. while the cover 21 may be lifted if a greater draft is desired for the light and the entire top and bottom of the lantern may be readily removed whenever desired by withdrawdrawing the pin members 37 and 39.
While the form of the invention herein shown and described is What is believed to be the preferred embodiment thereof, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made without departing curved deflectors carried by the said tubes above the perforations thereof, and perforated protecting means for the outlet of the top.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK LASZCZAK.
